NSU-COM Interview Discussion thread

Hey guys I got an interview coming up. I was wondering, does Nova grant interviews using LORs as one of the things that determines whether a person gets an interview or just stats and PS?

only mcat and gpa grant you an interview for nova. (at least thats what i was told at my interview)

From what I understand, the initial application is screened using the GPA and MCAT parameters as criteria. After passing that, the application undergoes a primary review by admissions to determine if an interview will be granted based on that initial review of application.

After the interview, the application and interview are both reviewed in totality by admissions to determine if a reccomendation to offer a seat in the class will be made. The offer is then certified or signed by Dean Silvagni before you get that life-changing call from Rachel 🙂

my fellow 10/25ers...

I called Nova today and asked them whats up. They said that my application has come out of the admissions committee, and there are two steps left...a signature from the dean about the adcom's decision, and a signature from teh executive board as a final decision.

I asked waht the adcom decided, but they said they would not tell me. The lady said the process will proally be done by about monday, so she asked me to call on Monday to see if it is indeed complete. That lady was so nice!!

I'm nervous and literally shivering... 😱

Wow!!! That's good to know!!!! Is Nova your first choice?

i got into nova, and the school was gorgeous, def one of my top picks if not my top. But thus far everyone that i know who got an interview at nova has gotten in. It really makes me wonder how selective nova really is compared to other DO schools?

I think they may be more selective as to who gets interviews while other schools may be more selective post-interview.

i guess thats true.

I was also curious about the selectivity as well, it actually looks like around 14% of applicants are accepted. Remember the SDN forum crew might not be an accurate representation of the applicant pool.

Check out this thread, it gives data from the US News and World Report about the number of people applied vs. interviewed vs. acceptances.

Hey 10/25ers I just got a call from Nova (about 45 minutes ago) and I am accepted. I'm really excited, I loved the school. So, you you haven't heard from them they may know by now if you call them. Good luck!

I interviewed on 10/30 and just found out today. I am so excited. I love this school. Good luck to everyone.

Hey enginerd (we spoke about engineering) and 10/25ers, I'm in too. Will proly see you around in august! CONGRATS

to everyone else who interviewed or got in, do u have any negatives about nova? im trying to find pros and cons for every school and the only con i have about nova is black october. other than that, i think im pretty much sold on the school.

I thought the school was great but didn't like the attendance policy. I think thats all I had a problem with. People will tell you the dress policy is a problem, but the students where scrubs everyday.

Hold on, let me find a thread that someone posted earlier... It has some pros and cons for nova.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=5785707&postcount=7

Its comparing Nova to AZ-COM but you can pick out some pros and cons...

I'm in too!!! Got the call around 430ish. Was rather surprised as I didn't except to hear anything until next week!

Belichek: My big con for Nova is the cost of living in Ft. Lauderdale. It is ridiculous!

Congrats everyone that got the call today!

HD

I called NOVA today since I've gotten interview invites from all the school except for the east coast schools. Over the phone the rep said, "OH, your MCAT is such and such and your GPA is such and such. Let me get your file to XX to review. Give me your phone number in case she wants to call you."

I got the invite email 2 hours later. I guess the criteria for interview is strictly the GPA and MCAT at NOVA.

You're in, they don't call the waitlisters.

I just got an acceptance packet with no call!

i was thinking the same, but i just wanna hear it from them...the golden words that I've been accepted, after 4 years of undergraduate hell 😛

i actually wanted to say on the beach because i was there for 3 days too. I decided to choose ramada inn hollywood beach resort cuz their website looked good, i got a good price...but the place was grooosss. It was all like old and muggy, and the first room that i went into, it wasnt a double bedroom...just one bed, and i had asked for 2 beds. Then they gave me crap for it even after i showed them my reservation email. And they charged me extra to get a room with 2 beds. I said fine, i'll take it. So the room i got smelled like moldy sandwiches and cardboard. And the next day another room opened up and it was relatively decent.

The ramada inn is right on the beach, and it has a cool ocean walk that connects all the hotels on the beach and follows the shore for miles. Very nice, but careful, the service and the accommodations at that ramada was subpar. There's a Marriott like 5-7 mins away from the beach that seems really nice, so try giving that place a shot. There's also a Holiday Inn there that has got good reviews

Ok..so if this is your only concern about NSU, then you have nothing to worry about. Black October isn't like some doomsday formal month where teachers intentionally try to make life hell for students. Its just a silly name that they give this period of time where there many of the classes schedule their exam because its pretty much right in the middle of the semester. You have time to prepare for it all (just not lots of time), and nothing is overwhelming to the point where you are going to fail. Im pretty sure you all remember how the middle/end of middle of semester in undergrad was also the worse in terms of all the classes having midterm exams etc. Same thing here, and Im pretty sure most medical schools are like this.

Please remember that most of the second year, and Im pretty sure the second semester of the 1st. year there is an exam every week or so. Really, black october is just the kickoff getting us ready for the rest of our time in pre-clinical years at Nova 🙂

Any medical school is going to be stressful at times and academically challenging....So don't be scared of the challenge.

Good Luck in whatever you decide 🙂 :luck:👍

i got the call yesterday too! and i'm in 😀

You certainly do not need to stay by the beach to go to the beach, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Plantation last year and went to the beach twice, its only about a 15 min drive from Nova to the beach, but I would say stick to Ft Lauderdale beach, Hollywood beach is not pretty, very spring break, broken down looking IMO. Check out www.nova.edu and there is a visit nova link with hotels that offer interviewee discounts, but you may also want to compare those prices to ones you find on Travelocity, Priceline, etc. I know that the HolidayInnExpress Plantation was nice, and its packed every weekend. But there are plenty of decent places at resonable prices. Good Luck!

👍👍Congratulations to the all new acceptees!!! Finish strong this year and enjoy the hell out of your summer break it'll end fast. If you have any questions or concerns about moving down here, life in Ft Lauderdale, or anything at all feel free to PM me. I know Kuba is a great resource as well. Again congrats all!👍👍

How did you go about finding housing? I live up north and am wondering how the housing process went for current students. Is there a roomates wanted list, it seems like having a roomate is the easiest way to cut down on rent expenses. I've looked through a bunch of old threads and am trying to get an idea about where to live, when to start looking, and how to end up with a decent roomate to lower costs. Thanks

thanks for the responces!! so no ramada inn haha...

I think there is some direction (North or South) that you don't want to live because of traffic. You might want to ask a current Nova student which direction not too live. gL

Workers go south and east in the morning and the reverse when going home. So living south and west is "better."

Hey guys,
Does anyone know of a place that rents cars to those that are between 21-24 who don't have insurance in their name at home and also places that don't charge a ridiculous underage fee, and if they do...something minimal like 10 bucks.

for those of you that have interviewed elsewhere (as well as nova) how does nova rank based on your liking? i interviewed at UNECOM( as well as tulane, Umass, and dartmouth), and i thought nova was a lot better. How does nova rank based on where else you interviewed based on first impressions? Im just looking for other opinions since i havnt interviewed at many DO schools.

THANKS!! 🙂

Hey Belichek, I interviewed at Bradenton. Bradenton was really nice, but as soon as I saw Nova's other facilities (like the gym), I knew where I was going to school. I was just really impressed by everything there. If you end up at Nova, I'll see you next year.

Well it definitely beats out Hollywood Upstairs Medical College...even w/ the fact that HUMC has people like the famous Dr. Nick Riviera ("Dr. Nick") as alumni.

For those who do not Dr. Nick. You may have seen him on the Shopping network selling the famous Troy McClure Juicer.

unfortunately the only place that I have rented a car from is budget, which does rent out cars to people under 25. however it is an extra 20 bucks a day, so I would stay away from them.

i finally got into Nova!!!! my first acceptance!!!!!

I've been offered two dates for an interview: 12/4 or 12/7, do I only have these two available or can I reschedule? My UNECOM interview is on 12/8 and I don't really want to travel to florida for a day.

hey guys just got an interview invite today...will be going on 12/7...any advice on the actual interview itself? thanks!

i got one for dec 4 or 7 also, but i have other interviews both of those days..are they good about rescheduling?

Be prepared to be interviewed by 3 people at the same time. Fairly conversational interviews though. It is an open file interview so be prepared for anything. One person during my interview was really questioned about their verbal score (6 i beleive) so be able to explain any weakness in your app. By the way the school is awesome...make sure to see Ft. Lauderdale, downtown is cool and beaches are amazing.

are you going to go here for sure or have you not thought about that yet....?

well this is the only acceptance i have so far. so as of right now, this is where im going

but i am waiting to hear back after interviewing at ccom...so i guess i still have a few months before finalizing my decision

Have any of you guys that have been accepted to Nova gotten your acceptance packets yet? How long did it take after the phone call?

I did! I didn't get a phone call.

I'm sorry for this newbish question. But what point in the year are the interviews mainly or purely for waitlist spots?

With all the peeps saying they got accepted, its kind of making me worried with my late November interview.

I think you are still fine in November. Remember, people will turn down spots in December (I will turn down my spot in a couple of days). So there are still spots left. Plus, Nova has a high acceptance/Interview ratio. Don't be worried!
