NSU-COM Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Who else is interviewing on Friday (11/30)? Would love to meet up the night before if you're free. I'm local so I can pick you up if you're not staying too far to the south or east of the school.

Has anyone heard anything from the NSU interviews on 11/14 or 11/16?

I interviewed on 11/16 and still haven't heard anything. I loved it there in sunny Florida 🙂 Hopefully we will hear very soon. We were told that we should know by the first week of December, which is next week. crossing fingers.

Does NSU confirm the interview dates? I recieved an interivew invite and sent them an email right away with my choice of date, but I have not heard anything from them since. Should I call them and confirm my interivew date?

Thanks!!

Hi All,

Just wanted to see if anyone else was interviewing on January 11th. Does anyone have a ball park estimate on how full the class is? I really like NOVA and love the idea of going to Medical School in Florida (I'm from Chicago, and right now it is 30 degrees outside 😡). I've got pretty good stats: 3.4gpa, 27O MCAt, lots of research and healthcare related experience, but my concern is that I will be interviewing too late in the cycle. Can anyone shed some light on the situation. How full is next years class?

I'm not sure how full their class is for next year, but i know if you are granted an interview they accept around 70 percent of those people according to the admissions counselor at NOVA.

I would email them if they haven't sent you a confirmation of your interview. They send a packet of materials in the mail once you have set your interview date.

someone on the NSU Interview thread mentioned according to their admissions counselor they admit around 70% of people interviewed. (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=452644&page=9)

Hope this helps!

Has anyone who interviewed on Nov. 14th heard anything back from Nova yet?

Yes, they do accept about 70 percent of interviewees, but later on in the cycle (I don't know if we've gotten to this time yet).. they begin to interview for their waitlist. Aka, you have a 70 percent chance of being accepted onto the waitlist. Just a thought to consider..

i still havent received the acceptance packet FYI. I called Rachel directly 1 week after the interview to find out whether I was in or not and then waited for the packet. About a week ago (which was 2 weeks after i called) i called again asking where the packet is and she said its in the pile to go out "tomorrow". needless to say, it has been another week and still no packet so i wouldn't worry. you can always call her directly if you want.

Is anyone else interviewing on Jan. 11th?

Has anyone interviewed on 12/4 heard anything back yet?

What's going on with the admission people? I've tried calling Dev for the last three days and no one has picked up. I also emailed Rachel on Mon. and it's now Wed. and there's still no response. It's been almost a month since I've interviewed (11/14). I was really hoping to hear something before I send out the rest of my secondaries.

Yeah I know what you mean, i interviewered on 11/9 and haven't heard ne thing yet! I guess all we can do is wait, and call.. haha

maybe they're just really busy now

there are some interesting comments about the school in the osteopathic thread. One person said that EVERYONE who graduate in the last three years is unhappy and has nothing nice to say about the school.

Its kind of weird because a DO who graduated two years ago said she loved it. But the consistent thought among all was the administration problem.

Most shocking was some comments about people who were cheating and school didnt do anything about it.

I am not a hater ( i am applying to school here) but just wanted to bring it for thoughts from others who interviewed there or know people at the school

While it's always good to hear different opinions on things, I think this needs to be taken with a grain of salt. For example, has that person actually asked "EVERYONE who graduated in the last three years" if they were unhappy with the school? I don't think so. Who was this person, anyway? Did they attend NSU? If so, chances are they for some reason or another had a bad experience and found other unhappy people (misery does love company, after all), and assumed it was the norm. I mean, the simple fact that you know someone who graduated two years ago and loved it completely disproves what that person said.

I believe you get out of something what you put into it, and I'm not going to let someone I don't even know on a message board post some obviously untrue crap about the school I end up attending and upset me or convince me to change my mind. I would hope nobody else here would either.

That's weird...I interviewed on 11/7, received a packet in the mail 2 weeks ago saying I was accepted. You should definately bug the admissions people. Good luck!

hmm so then maybe it just means that I'm not accepted... 🙁

shouldn't they send out a rejection letter?

and is their sending out a confidential letter telling you to get a NSU email address their way of telling you that you're placed on hold?

Nope, I got that letter too, and I was accepted.

i called and found out i was accepted 1 week after the interview. ive been promised the packet "next week" at least twice now and still have not gotten it and it's been over a month so i wouldnt worry. rachel said they are moving slower than usual

Okay guys, I found out why I haven't heard anything from Nova yet. Since I go by my middle name, they had my letters of recommendation under my middle name instead of my first name. So my LORs were not in my file which prevented me from going before the committee. Now that I've talked to Marla, and straighten everything out, my file is ready to go before the committee. Only problem is that the committee won't meet again till next year. 🙁

I interviewed on Nov. 14th, it would have nice if they would have emailed or called me and told me that my LORs were missing. I called Dev a couple of weeks after my interview and he didn't mention anything about my file missing anything. 😡 I really want to go to Nova but the admissions people seem very disorganized. LECOM, on the other hand, has made the process very smooth.

Awww sorry to hear that Hilfiger!! I'm really glad that you found out what the issue is tho!! Wow when you say that the ad. committee won't be meeting till next year.. haha wow that sounds like along time away, but only what 3 weeks?

Somehow I have a feeling that the same issue might be for me as well. I was told i that I was missing my liberal arts LOR at my interview which my prof did mail and which he made sure he emailed to her after I came back from the interview. I should call them and find out if indeed that is the issue!

Eugene, thanks for your ongoing re-assurance!!!

Doinmybest- Thanks for letting me know about the letter, that was definately re-assuring as well!

But overall, congrats on all of you that have been accepted!! You can really put the end of 2007 celebration into full force! :hardy:

I was told I was missing 2 LOR's at my interview (12/4) but both professors told me they sent them at least a month before. I had them both fax copies that day and when I finally talked to Dev about it he said they only got one of the faxes. It's a pain, but the other professor is nice enough that he said he'll fax it again and mail another copy. I don't know who keeps track of the letters at NSU but I'm not sure they're always doing their job. Now I'll probably have to wait until after New Years too. Lame.

Whoever is responsible for the LORs need to do their job. I mean how many people applying have the same last names? Even if you had two people with the same last name wouldn't you look at the AACOMAS applications and match it up with the proper file?

Moestar and seb83, get in contact with Marla at admissions. She seems to get things done.

i found out yesterday that i was invited for an interview but the earliest date that works is 12/25. just from reading the posts above that seems to be very late, almost too late, for any chance of admission??? any thoughts? (to make things worse, i'm oos 😕) does anyone know if the class has filled or when it filled last year? how many people get off waitlist? any help will be really appreciated. also, any advice on a hotel to stay in as close as possible to nova?

Do you mean 1/25?

Cheating will only lead to your demise. You may be able to cheat in your classes (I'm speaking in general at any institution), but your board scores are YOUR board scores. If there is cheating at NSU and you want to make it aware, there is an ethics committee for each class. You may present that information to them and they will be able to speak to a higher power on the matter. If you go through the proper channels, things will get done.

Hang in there. Enjoy your vacation.

There was good movement off the waitlist. There were individuals in the first year class that were accepted a week or two before classes actually started.

If you want to read about stats, I would pick up the US News medical school book. They give some pretty good stats, though I'm not sure they provide information about movement off the waitlist. As a note, movement on the waitlist is different each year. It all depends on how many interviewed individuals were granted admission and also accepted their seat in the class.

Last year, there were individuals who interviewed in February-April and were granted admission to NSU. My question is: What is your reason for declining the interview?

Can anybody give me Rachel Weiner's email address? I didn't get it at my interview and she NEVER answers her phone. Thanks.

yes, my interview is on1/25. would you think that this pretty much puts me on the waitlist? i called dev to speak to him about this and at first he was a little defensive and said that it is a little late but then he said that i should be fine. i asked him specifically if there were spots still available, and if historically people got in after january interviews and that was his response. i'm going away for the break and not returning till 1/20. not sure if i should change my plans and return early for this (flying out of the us)?!?!?!?

My suggestion is to be prepared for the interview and let them know, in a subtle way, that Nova is your first choice and to explain why.

As I wrote you privately, acceptance post January depends year to year. The big determining factor is the number of individuals who submitted their mid-December deposits to secure their seat in the class.

i'm getting kind of worried because I found out I was accepted 11/16 by phone and was promised the packet for the longest time and I have still yet to receive it. December 14th came and went and still no packet. I'm going to call tomorrow since I coudn't reach anyone in admissions Friday, but could the packet have gotten lost somehow?

anyone else interviewing on 1/25?? would be great to hear back!

I believe the package comes through certified mail, which requires a signature of some kind. I hope you were able to pay your deposit by the deadline. Yes, the package could have gotten lost.

i have not paid a deposit because i received no package. i'm going to call nova tomorrow.

i know it's sent via certified mail, which requires a signature. if the package came and the mail man missed me he would have left me one of those notes saying that i can pick it up at the post office the next day. i never got anything. i actually tried to reach nova fri dec 14th but nobody picked up, not rachel not anyone at the office. man i really hope i don't somehow get screwed by this...

the catalog says that applicants accepted before nov 15th have until dec 14th to pay the deposit... i only found out on nov 16th and that was by phone only (and I was the one that called Rachel). so I do think that everything should be ok. at least I have technicality on my side.

You're right about the dates. You should be covered by that clause. I will still find out where your acceptance package is as soon as possible. Forgive me for not mentioning, congrats on your acceptance!

thanks very much! i did call rachel today and she said it was just recently sent out and if i don't get it by the end of the week i should call again. she also said my deposit is due by jan 7th (that's really what i was trying to find out anyway). phew!

I was going to mention that you should find out about your deposit date, cuz it's usually three weeks after the acceptance letter is sent out. You're on top of it though... awesome! Congrats again!

How on earth did you ever get a hold of Rachel. I've called her almost every day for a week and I only get voicemail. I didn't get her email address at my interview so any help would be great...

after i sent in my deposit i called to confirm they got it. I also asked how many have sent in the deposit to date, and they told me they cant release that information but they usually expect it to be about 1/2 full by january.

Accepted at NSU! Got a call from Rachel yesterday. I interviewed 11/30. My letter is apparently dated 12/7, but Rachel said that they are very backed up and had trouble getting things processed. (I suspect they did some juggling around the 12/15 deadline for previous acceptees.)

So anyway, my deadline for deposit is January 7th. Rachel said my packet was going out this week, but with the holiday it may not make it until post-X-mas, which leaves me like no time to come up with the $$. I've complete at several other schools for months without a word about interviews. So it looks like NSU it will be!!! At least I won't have to move...

i've had my stuff in with my application complete on 11/15. i still haven't heard anything yet...i've checked with their online site and i guess my app is still under review. do they offer interviews next year??? or is the entering class mostly full now? i'm really interested in this school.
