Since I was invited for an interview, I decided to check out Nova's student handbook.

Hoo boy. These people are serious. Formal attire (shirts/ties, no shorts, no miniskirts, sandals, etc.), no food/drinks in lecture halls, required attendance. All these rules&regs might make you forget that you're living in southern Florida. Is there anyone else who finds this just a bit too onerous to deal with?

From the handbook:
Attendance percentage will be calculated separately for each course. Students can scan their ID
card from 10 minutes before the start of class until 10 minutes after the class begins (20 minutes
after the hour) for each session. For lecture sessions that are more than one hour in length and are
consecutively scheduled, a student will be required to follow the attendance-taking procedures by
scanning in at the start of the first hour unless otherwise noted in the course syllabus or announced
by the instructor during the class session.
Students with less than 80 percent attendance in more than 20 percent of the total number of courses
during the M1 and M2 academic years will have this lack of compliance in attendance noted on their
Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
Unannounced spot checks of the attendance will be conducted. Students who need to leave
during a lecture or block of lectures must scan out in order to verify if they are in violation of the
Code of Conduct. Any student discovered scanning in for another student will be considered to be
in violation of the Code of Conduct and will be reported to the Student Progress Committee. Both
the student who is documenting attendance for another and the student who is the beneficiary of
the act will be subject to charges of academic fraud and subject to disciplinary action, up to and
including dismissal.
...
Those failing to comply may be dismissed from the classroom and/or the campus resulting in an
absence for the day. Noncompliance with the dress code requirements may be designated in a
student’s MSPE.
...
Students inappropriately dressed or groomed may be requested to leave the campus. In this
circumstance, an unexcused absence will be recorded until the student returns properly attired.
Questionable or disputed cases of dress or grooming shall be presented to the dean, whose decision
shall be final. Repeated violations will be considered improper professional behavior and may result
in disciplinary action. When a class requires special dress (such as the wearing of scrub suits in
anatomy laboratory), it will be the only exception to the dress code allowed during that time.
...
Food, beverages, and tobacco are not permitted in the lecture halls, laboratories, or university clinics.

You can either go business casual, or wear scrubs to class. Required attendance is 70% for each class, without penalty.

Yeah the rules are a bit ridiculous but loosely enforced. Just remember where there are rule there are ways of getting around them. The food in the lecture hall thing is just hialrious, I eat breakfast everday in class.

half the ppl eat and drink stuff in there...and most ppl wear hoodies/sweaters/long sleeve to class since its so damn cold in the lecture halls..so the dress code isnt enforced either..attendance is enforced strictly..but many ways to bypass

yeah, to be honest, when i visited, it really didn't seem to be a big deal. the dress code can be bypassed by wearing scrubs. and personally, i'd rather wear scrubs everyday than having to pick out an outfit everyday. we're going to have to wear scrubs as residents, so why not as med students? seeing everyone in scrubs made it seem more professional without being too proper (like if everyone was dressed up). the attendence policy isn't that bad either - you're allowed to miss 20-30% of your classes without any consequence. and i'm sure there are ways around that too. but definitely don't let it affect your decision to interview/attend there.

As an alumnus, I will tell you that as long as you don't go overboard and don't make too much a big deal out of things... the rules and regulations can be more lax. Here's what I wouldn't do: 1. don't miss any OMT labs or lectures. 2. Have your white coat on your person during exams. 3. Only Mild horseplay.

My year, I had a classmate who was discovered to have been involved in a video on a pornographic website. He did not get thrown out. Take that for what it's worth.

Another thing I should tell you is that I think the place is great, and that if you put a little bit of work in, you'll find that you're going to be very successful. Many people in my class are doing very well right now.

So it was your year that that happened. It is still notorious around here, guess things like that don't die. It is nice to see that when you look back you were happy with it. Right now in the middle of Renal things don't feel so great.

Also the second year isn't as cold, no need for jackets it is just in Still Auditorium that is like a freezer.

when you say doing well, in terms of what? money or specialty?

looking at his sig...optho resident...specialty AND money is implied.. hehe

HAHAHA.... "Doing well" meaning... they are happy with where they are. Not necessarilly implying money, because as residents you are making less than minimum wage.. implying that they are in the fields they chose at places they want to be. But If you must know...

We had several people in my class match allopathic general surgery, I know for a fact two people who are doing Dermatology, two doing ophthalmology, one doing neurosurgery. This is not what impresses me at all though.

From what I hear through the grapevine about many of my classmates, they are really shining in their respective residencies--ie.they were well prepared. This is what is the most encouraging to me and should be a source of pride for everyone who is a student at NSU right now. Sometimes we all get pissed off as med students, I myself used to criticize the hell out of the school. But now that I see the big picture, and how well prepared I was for my internship, it's hard to find many faults with my medical education, except that horrific geriatrics rotation I had to do. Why the school forces you to do a separate month of geriatrics when all of the other clinical rotations are in FLORIDA baffles me:confused:

I wish all of you people luck at NSU, make sure you sit out at the beach or do something florida-like at least once a week during your time there... it makes a huge difference. And if there are any specific questions you have please don't hesitate to ask.
