So I checked the matchlist for NSU for '04, '05 and '06 and the matches are all in fields of primary care. Where are those that decided not to be in primary care? Are they not included or did everyone just decide to do primary care or what?

The above are from the 2006 matchlist at NSU. There seems like a good mix of people not going into Primary care. Not entirely sure if OB/GYN falls into primary care as well so I didn't add that in here.

Also, alot of people do the traditional rotating year so that they can practice in the 5 states (FL, PA, MI, two others?). Then after that they go into their field of interest which may or may not be primary care (someone correct me if I am wrong 🙂 )

Good post! You're right about the trad. rotating year and those who do the transitional year. The other two states you're looking for are WV and OK I believe.

so what is that traditional year I hear about? is it the internship year? and then you do the specialty? and if so, does this mean that it's safe to assume that those in traditional and transitional will mostly be doing something outside of primary care. Or did they just not match into a residency program?

cool, umm what about rad.or onc. anyone form NSU going into those?

It's possible that people are going into radiology, but go through the traditional rotating year first.

The Traditional rotating year is another year tacked onto your residency where you basically rotate through everything. From what I gather, it's like the 3rd year rotations, but on crack

After the traditional rotating year, you do the regular residency stuff (intern PGY-1 etc). However, you enter inter year as a PGY-2.

It's a bit confusing, and I really hope to clear it all up for myself as well!

Radiology is very comptetive, even for MDs, it's possible that no one in 2006 matched into it. However, I suspect that at least one or two of those people in the trad rotating year will head into rads.

With that said, if you check out the 2005 match list, there were 2 students who matched into rads:

Diagnostic Radiology
Garden City Hospital Osteopathic - MI 1
Specialty Total 1

Radiology-Diagnostic
Mt Sinai Med Ctr - FL 1
Specialty Total 1

I assumed at least a few people would be matching in derm because of the affiliated hospitals with derm spots, although it doesn't show people matching in derm for the past 2 years...So I guess people possibly matched derm but did a traditional rotating year first (since they are in FL) ?

You can't read a lot into NSU's matchlist. They manipulate the list to make it look like as many of our graduates as possible go into primary care, supposedly to please the state (who allowed the establishment of the school in order to increase the number of primary care doctors in Florida.)

Florida is still one of the 5 states that "require" a traditional rotating internship to practice. Many people do the 1 year internship, and apply during that year to residency programs in other fields (surgery, anesthesia, rads, etc.)

Also anyone going into Internal Medicine can't necessarily be considered primary care. Some will go on to do fellowships after their IM residency (cardiology, gastroenterology, etc.).

With regards to derm, most of NSU's derm residencies require 2 years of family medicine or internal medicine before beginning the program.

Sure it looks like about 75% of graduates go into primary care on paper...but I'm sure if alumni were polled it would be smaller.

Thank you for the info Pegasus!

*bump* Can anyone account for the number of people missing on the list?

Also, for those who have not voted, please help provide input on NSU vs UNECOM. Thanks! 😀

I wondered about them too. and I voted already, you won't guess who I voted for!

I'm going to develop an ulcer from pondering what your answer was! So, still looking for a response to account for the other students not listed.

I know...H. pylori

i was told last year by someone on SDN that NSU's class size used to be alot smaller..thats why there are less ppl on the matchlists..i think it was only until recently (past few years) where they expanded their class size to 230+ ...

Oh I think it's the one for last year or the previous year. I think it's because the match list reflects those who have gotten their first choice. This is what I have been told.

if thats the case..more than 2/3 of the class getting their first choice is awesome
