NY Resident WAMC / School List Help – 513 MCAT, 3.92 GPA, Research-Heavy

Hi everyone, I’m looking for feedback on my MD school list and overall chances. On admit.org my results seem very reach heavy, although I removed a few target schools that were too far for me (vermont, virgina, etc).

GPA: 3.92
MCAT: 513
NY resident
University of Rochester undergrad
Race: Indian/white

Research
1 publication, 2 submitted for review, 2 oral abstracts, international and national conference, multiple posters, poster award and research presentation award.

• Immunology Research Assistant: 500 hours
• MD Anderson Summer internship CPRIT CURE program: 400 hours
• Parkinson’s Clinical Research Assistant: 75 hours

Clinical/Patient Care

• Hospital volunteer organization for 2 years: 150 hours
• Shadowing: 150 hours - oncology, psychiatry, pediatrics, GI, urology, orthopedics, pathology, and surgery

Non-Clinical Volunteering

• Youth Riding Instructor / therapeutic and recreational horseback riding: 800 hours
• Vice President of DEI / student organization service and advocacy

Leadership

• President, The Women’s Network
• Captain Club Soccer

Genetics TA

Yes, your list is top heavy. Your clinical volunteering hours at 150 are adequate since many schools screen at 150 hours but top tier schools expect many more. You also do not have any non clinical volunteering hours that medical schools are looking for and some schools screen at 150 hours. I suggest these schools with your stats and ECs:

You definitely need service orientation activities: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation. You must have 150 hours minimum or your file is at risk of getting screened out.

Are you looking for research-focused schools? Why are you not considering at least a master's in biology (research, not SMP)?

I didn't specify in my description but I should have mentioned the horseback riding instructor is service-oriented as it focuses on providing opportunities for kids in the city, as well as disabled and non-disabled students.
Also, my hospital volunteering includes patient transportation. In the descriptions this is evident but at first glance for screening is there still a chance of being removed? For example should I categorize the riding instructor as community health advocacy? But then I would not have a category for non-clinical volunteering.

I am planning to continue research so therefore want schools that have a high research involvement, but do not want to continue with wet lab research as I have been doing.

Thanks for the help! I should have been more specific in that my non clinical volunteering for horseback riding is service-oriented as it provides opportunities for underserved communities to ride. Would this matter how I framed this for screening purposes?

Therapeutic riding does not qualify as "transportation services."

Patient transportation is usually clinical service unless you are driving people in a van to grocery stores, similar to paratransit or public transportation.

My apologies, I thought you were talking about non clinical volunteering. As a hospital volunteer which I listed above, I was a patient transporter, which I write about in my descriptions.
