Texas resident at Colorado Undergrad - no gap years
Major - Interdisciplinary biology/compsci/engineering major - currently doing MS in same degree (3yr undergrad + 1 yr masters)
GPA- 3.97
MCAT - 513
ORM

Research - 1050
- 1050 hrs chemical and biological engineering lab
- 2nd author paper published, 2nd author paper in review, 1st author paper in prep
- 2nd place poster at schools undergrad research symposium

Clinical - 1300
- 300 hrs EMT IFT
- 700 hrs 911 EMT (volunteer)
- 300 hrs ski patrol

Extracurriculars
- club sport- 900 hrs - with president/captain position past year

AMCAS Primary sent: 6/25 ..... secondaries late august??


I'm a Texas resident applying to Texas and out of state. I still need to decide on additional out-of-state schools before my primary gets verified. I'd be fine taking a gap year and reapplying if it meant getting into a Texas school, rather than paying full out-of-state tuition somewhere. So any OOS school I add needs to actually be worth that cost compared to just trying again in-state.



Any thoughts about competitiveness for these Texas schools and recommendations for out of state schools would be very appreciated!!

Welcome to the forums. What outreach have you done? Have you attended any recruitment events (on-campus or virtual) at schools where you have interest? How do you define "value"?

If your degree is in an engineering field, I would consider Carle. Be aware that Texas A&M and Arizona State issue Masters degrees with their MD degrees (not that it matters so much, but you should ask questions). Otherwise, it seems like wilderness medicine is an interest.

Your non-clinical volunteering hours at submission if described above is well below 150 hours of service orientation (food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation). I'll give you a little credit for naloxone training, but your 900 hours of club sports shows me where your priorities have been while in college.

You are competitive for all the Texas schools and if you have written some good essays explaining your “why” for medicine I expect you to get several Texas interviews

Thank you for your feedback. I definitely realize my nonclinical volunteering is quite low. I was not aware until more recently that clinical/non clinical volunteering was as separated, and I was debating holding off a cycle, but ultimately decided to apply. At submission, I had only volunteered for 30 hours through weekly shifts for a semester at a harm reduction center, but I have 120 projected (not that it is taken into account much). For the naloxone holder, I designed and 3D-printed a waistband clip for staff at another clinic who wanted help making a better holder. This upcoming semester, I will continue working on improvements, mostly with testing more durable filaments.

In terms of “value,” I am interested in a school with good research opportunities. My main research interests are quantitative imaging and engineering applications in medicine. If I were accepted OOS to a school with strong research support, I could justify the additional cost compared to reapplying next cycle.

So far, I have attended a virtual information session for EnMed but none for the other schools. Are there any particular OOS programs or recruitment events you would recommend based on those interests?

Take a look at the new Medicine + Engineering-focused school at Arizona State. Ties to Arizona are not required, but an engineering background is best.
ASU MD admissions

Virginia Tech Carilion prefers applicants with research or engineering background, is a small class of only 80.
Carle Illinois is the 3rd engineering focused school that comes to mind

You should do your homework on each of the schools we suggested who seek engineering-trained students. We have an article about Carle Illinois in the articles site that details more about what they do when designing devices for patients. If that's what you mean by "research," you should check them out. Otherwise, you need to be more specific with "research" and how it enhances your future residency application. Do you need a dedicated year? How about literature reviews?
