NY schools: NYU, Mt Sinai, and Columbia

Does anyone know the general environment of NYU, Mt. Sinai, and Columbia?
Specifically..

What's the housing type (apt vs houses vs highrises)?
Is it commercial or residential?
Crime/ sketchiness factor?

I have a dog, and want a dog-friendly place, so... trying to avoid really trafficky busy commercial areas.

I hate to break it to you, but most of these schools have dormitory-style housing, specifically NYU. The nature of this sort of facility excludes the allowance of pets - I think I read on AECOM's website that you can't even have a fish tank.

i know it might seem a bit odd, but she's my family, and I'm willing to make sacrifices for her, including which medschool i attend =)

anyways, mssm is right next to central park, which i guess the dog would enjoy — and you could choose to live in mssm apts or off-campus, instead aron hall, if necessary. the official rule is no pets (for aron at least), but i'm not sure how strictly that's enforced. (i hope it's not)

I think the OP will have plenty of choices to choose from that are pet friendly.

cornell has some nice options.. you can live in dorm type but i also say that they have quite a few walk ups and apartment buildings where students can live.

Columbia: dorm housing first year, then apartment-style.

As far as I know, housing is not guaranteed 2nd year, but the housing office helps you find an affordable place to live. Given that it's Washington Heights, rent is not too bad. If you lived in the dorm (Bard) the first year and don't get into the apartments (Towers) for second year, you're guaranteed a spot for 3rd year.

Why are you so interested in New York City? I see NYC as the only downside to attending Columbia.

i say look for an apartment on your own. most dorms will cost you around the same as rent for a NYC apartment.

not sinai's! mount sinai's rent (aron hall) runs around $530-$600 🙂

I HATE THAT SCHOOL.

they have dorms ALL over NYC, like literally they've taken over lower manhattan. they even have their own private bus lines that run around downtown!!!!!!

I would say NYU is in a more populated neighborhood which would be safer, plenty of people wandering around at night.

columbia is in a quieter neighborhood, but would probably have cheaper appartments than NYU.

not too sure about mt. sinai but if the above poster is correct, thats REALLY cheap for a dorm so I wouldnt expect much from the rooms lol.

oh, sinai's housing is relatively nice compared to nyu's. aron hall is made up of 4- and 6-person suites, with a common room and two bathrooms, whereas nyu's (rubin?) first-year dorm housing is just a row of tiny singles along a hallway with a communal bathroom. not sure how much nyu's rent is though.

Mount Sinai has the best first year housing of any of the NYC schools hands down.

i interviewed at columbia, sinai and nyu,

order of expense for housing

sinai<columbia=nyu (~700/month as i recall)

however sinai had by far the nicest living arrangements. columbia had nicer rooms but nyu is in much much better area. nyu housing i thought looked like prison. if u have a pet i think sinai is by far the best option as u r right by the park.

i was impresse with all three school, sinai and columbia the most.

ouch!! that was way harsh!! ive lived in NYC since I came to this country and I love it.. i stayed here for college (even tho i got into harvard) because i couldnt even consider leaving... why no love for NYC??:cry:
