Can a dental student receive any financial support from their parents and still qualify for in state NY state tuition? If so, how much? Or does the student need to get all of their support from loans and scholarship?

I don't have the exact answer to your question. However, this is a very useful link that describes exactly what it takes to obtain NYS residency at Buffalo.

http://src.buffalo.edu/studentaccount/residency.shtml

I'm sure the answer to your question is buried somewhere in this link and the pdf that you can get from that page. Good luck.

Thank you. I had a chance to review the link earlier. I think if I understand it correctly is that once a student is over the age of 22 years old (can no longer be declared a dependent), they only need to provide a copy of a NY State income tax form. It does not necessarily require them to reveal the sources of income to pay for tuition.

In state tuition deals with where you live...not where you get your tuition money.

Granted. However, one of the conditions of getting in state residency is that if you are under 22 yo or younger and are moving in from out of state and declared as a dependent on your out of state parents tax returns, you will not be eligible for instate tuition.

You can also get in-state tuition the first year if you buy a house in NY. They adjust it per semester too; meaning if you cant find a house during the Fall, you can still qualify for the Spring tuition if you buy in time. You can get in-state for the Fall if you buy a house as late as late October of your first year.

This is one of the exemption that is not mentioned anywhere on the website or by the Financial Aid staffs unless you ask.

Thanks DrillSergeant,

Someone did share that same suggestion with me recently. Even for one year, it is a considerable savings.
