Hi! I'm a rising MS4 currently applying for away rotations in NYC, specifically NYU and Mount Sinai. Does anyone have any anecdotes/words of wisdom for rotating through these sites? Thank you so much!

Just as an aside, keep in mind that away rotations have a double edge. It is very difficult to impress attendings in a meaningful way in anesthesia: there are no rounds to show your knowledge, and there is little-to-zero chance you will ever impress technically (secondary to lack of experience). You will get points for not acting like a serial killer, but that can be demonstrated in interviews. Everyone is different, but I have not heard many away-rotation success stories, and just wanted to make sure you know it is by no means a requirement (I matched at a "top 5" without an away). That being said, I know a guy that did an away at Sinai and matched there. Send me a PM and I'll try and connect you.

I heard good things about both but if you're aiming for Sinai, doing an away helps as I recall at least one matches after doing an away; at least when I did mine, one of my co rotating MS4 matched there. Just don't do it in July when the new CA-1s come on.

it helps with getting an interview. but whether it helps with acceptance or not, i feel like it's not as important unless you leave a very positive impression, which again, is not easy in competitive institutions. that's why i decided to not do any away rotations

I know 3 people here who rotated here as fourth years. One did SICU, one pain, and one anesthesia. I think it would be easiest to impress in the unit, and pain also provides some opportunities to present and show your stuff. That said, most pds will be found in the main OR so if you think you've got the skills that may still be your best bet to meet and schmooze.

Aways will help get you the interview, so in my eyes it's worth it. Just do like 15 minutes of reading on the case you will be working on the next day and you're golden.
