Hey Bronte, I'm working on getting Friday off. I will let you know as soon as I do.

Come on guys, there has to be more NYCOMers out there that would like to meet up. Where are you?

Next week is block exams for 1st years. Neuro, Path, Micro, and OMM of pelvis/sacrum... a very arduous week to say the least. If you're visiting friday, bring some beer to the parking lot around noon and they'll tell you everything you want to know.

Pay no attention to any students on any roofs. They'll be talked down.

Let me know when you are going to meet. Keep me posted. If you make it a friday afternoon, I can be there. Elaina

where exactly are you guys meeting and what time...i'll be back in queens later that day.

I'm not sure but I would love a ride if anyone is going from Queens. I think we should probably meet outside the admissions buildings, hang out around there, maybe check it out again or talk to students. find out about housing. What time do you guys want to meet? Several people mentioned meeting in the afternoon. How about 1 PM near that swan or duck pond?

I am sooooooooooo glad this long process is over. Both my wife and I just received our acceptances to NYCOM today. I can't wait to move, and I can't wait for school to start.

hi, i just came across this website. i guess i'm going to NYCOM this fall too, and i would really like to meet other people that are going to be in my class, but i'm not really sure about the date and time, and the place where you guys are meeting. you know, technicalities like that... :)

Why do you say I guess?

i said "i guess" b/c i don't want to jinx it. i can't believe i finally got in...it's great! i heard a lot of good things about this school.

Okay, Lets get this straight. As of now we are meeting Friday March 22 at 1pm by the pond at NYCOM. Is this correct? I can be there. Who else can be there at this time? Make sure to post any corrections to the date.

yeah. that's what I mentioned in my last post. Is that time and place OK with everyone else???

hey kids...

seriously, just to warn you. First years have exams next week. By 1pm friday they'll be over and the first years will be gone. Second years may still be there, but they'll be in class for the afternoon. If you want to come meet first years and get input, most of the time the post-exam "party" (ie... drink till you dont remember any pathology anyway) is at the Barefoot Peddler. Its a bar just north of the intersection of Northern Blvd and Glen Cove Road. On the left. Cant miss it. People are usually there for the better part of the afternoon. You'll definitely be able to pick the NYCOMers out. Decent food too.

so do you guys want to meet earlier and then swing by the bar? what does everyone else think?
or what do people also want to do? I also wanted to see if I could find info about housing and just check out the school again. Hey smiley, have you gotten the day off yet? I told my boss the other day so it's official

thanks njdoc for the inside info.

I just want to check out housing options in the area. It's okay if I don't get to speak with students on that day. I was going to stop in the library and check out that log they have about housing, and then look around the area. I can be there by 2pm or 1 pm but not to much earlier. I live 100 miles away, so I need to know if other people are going to come on that date. You know, soI can deterimine if its worthwhile for me to come on that particular day.

ok so let's meet at 1:30 by that duck/geese pond. that way, it seems like everyone will be able to come, do their thing and who ever wants can go to the Barefoot Peddler can go a bit later in the afternoon since it looks like the first years will be there from 1 PM onwards.

So................... what does everyone else think? Is it a plan?

to whomever wanted a ride from queens....sorry, i won't be in queens until 8ish that nite :(
So i guess i'll just meet some of you when we start classes, but have fun on friday :)

i think i'll be able to make it. don't know for sure until next week, though...because i need to ask my boss to get the day off. she's usually very nice--so i think it's almost definite that i'll be there. i'm totally clueless as to where to go and what to do...when i went there for my interview i accidentally parked in the wrong place and got a ticket. so i'll probably try to be there earlier, just to make sure no more mishaps happen :) so not to sound like a total idiot, but...there is only 1 pond there, right? because if there is more than 1, you can bet anything i'll end up at the wrong one.

If other people are coming, I can be there friday March 22. That is this friday. However, if no one is coming I am gonna go after easter sunday while I am on my break. So post if you are going.

since no else has said that they are coming then I will visit once I move back to NY in two months. Maybe we could all get together during teh summer when more people are available.

Hey Bronte, no luck in getting Friday off. :( I had to call in sick two days this past week so I can't get off. I really want to go up there and meet though. Stinks! We'll keep chating and maybe we could set something up for a later date. If we start to plan far enough in advance maybe more people will be able to get together. I'll try to get up there soon though kust to look at the housing book and I'll post anything that I find. Oh, NYCOMers please keep posting so we can start to get to know eachother. It'll be great being able to start in August knowing we'll have some friends! :D  Keep in touch!

Just got accepted on the 20th. Went to NYIT undergrad and live 20 min south of campus. If you guys are looking for housing i would suggest also looking into areas like hicksville, westbury, bethpage, and plainview. The commute is about 15 - 25 min from these areas (you dont have to get on the congested highways) and rent would probably be more affordable than the north shore of L.I. just a suggestion!!!
lookinf foreward to meeting NYCOM Class of 2006

Hey Fugazi, what day did you interview on?

Elaina,

Interview was a mere personality check. They just wanted to get to know the person. Just know yourself and you'll be alright. On the secondrary the ask why you choose nycom, but as far as the interview (mine at least) was a personality check. They asked what i felt my strenghts and weaknesses are, discussed research and patient contact, and inquired about my experience as an undergrad. Was not stressful at all. Only one person interviewed me and he seemed more intimidated than i was.

Sounds like the interview they had for BS/DO students.

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering what day you were interviewed on. I was interviewed on the 29th of January. You sounded like someone who was there with me, and I was trying to figure out if you were that person. So how long ago did you interview? Just curious.

Elaina,
interviewed on march 8th.

so...i'd have to repeat the question. does anyone want to meet up at some point in NYCOM, meet your future classmates and find out about housing options and any other stuff?

I have no problem in meeting up with anyone that wants to. Im an undergrad at NYIT anyway and i live in the area so i might have some insight that some people are looking for. I know a few of our future classmates to begin with from the 7 year bs/do program. Anyone who wants to meet just set up a date and i will try to comply

Hey everyone!!! I just received my acceptance letter, so I'll see you in August! Has anyone been searching for apartments yet? I just started, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. Does anyone know the best(and cheapest) way to go about finding an apartment? Also, anyone going down with his or her spouse or significant other? How are you going about finding jobs for the significant other? My fiancee and I are getting married right before orientation and he's coming down to LI with me, but first he needs a job there.
I'm so excited!! Can't wait to meet everyone!!

My wife will be moving to down there too, but she will also be starting NYCOM in the fall with me   Rent direct seems to be the cheapest agency you can use to find an apartment. I think their website is rentdirect.net or something like that. All you have to do is pay a one time charge of $195.00 they do everything else from finding the place, until the day you move in. Congratulations on your acceptance. Oh by the way, there are a lot of apartments that are available. Rentdirect e-mails me at least 10 per day. Good luck!!

HEy congrats Labruy69!

From the older posts, I thought a bunch of us were going to meet sometime during the summer. I won't be back in NY till end of May but I would love to meet you guys then.

Has anyone received the financial aid packet from NYCOM?

No financial aid packet here and i've been calling to find out when they will be coming but noone seems to be in the admissions office... ever. I'd love to be getting all that stuff done. anyone else get anything from NYCOM?

Smileyfree
It appears your having the same troubles as me. I heard they distribute financial aid packages starting with the 4th year students and ending with us. I hope they come soon though.

HI There,

I just received my Financial Aid Packet today from NYCOM. I was accepted early last month! :)

Bump......Any more people going to NYCOM this fall?

so, to ask again: is anyone looking for housing/roommates in Old Westbury? i'd really love to find some form of housing, preferably soon and cheap.

Hey Annushka

I will be moving to NY next month. I am looking for a place and a roommate(s). It's difficult to find a place since I live in Phoenix. I think I will just look when I get there. If you find a place, please let me know. :)

Congrats everyone on getting into NYCOM!!!!
Where else did you all apply and/or get acceptances?

i got into TUCOM as well...but realized that moving to the west coast may be a bigger change than i originally thought :)

also, i got a couple of interviews--the one at UNECOM was especially messed up, since my letter arrived the night before my interview and i couldn't leave on such short notice, and it was their last week of interviewing :( but i hope nycom is all right too. congrats to you too.

mbenavidez--
i'll definitely let you know if i find something. just want to make sure that i have people before i begin looking...

Hey guys,

After calling up NYCOM and getting on their web board for housing....it doesn't seem like many 1st year students are registered to use the site yet but I will ask here anyway. I have a house in Smithtown, NY which is about 30 miles (east) away from school. With rush hour and traffic, it will probably take from 35-45min for commute. I haven't fully settled on prices for rooms yet but they will range from 400-600 depending on room size. It is a fully furnished and newly renovated 3 bedroom ranch house, 2 bath, kitchen, living/dining room and finished basment. The area is really nice, shopping centers, park facility, and railroad all in walking distance. If anyone is interested they can email me at [email protected]. If it matters I am 22 year old male and will be graduating this fall from University of Delaware. Please no pets and no smokers as well. Email me for more information, thanks.

To NYCOM class of 2006:

Anyone interested in purchasing medical books? I am a member of NYCOM class of 2002 and am looking to unload some used but like-new material. I have:
- Lachman's case studies
- NMS Pediatrics
- Surgical Secrets
- Blueprints series (must have for clinical rotations)
- First Aid (Step I + II, wards, the Match)

and more... I'm in the NYC/Long Island area. I'll be free for the next month or so, and then start to get busy as internship approaches mid-June, so e-mail me soon: [email protected]

Good luck to everyone in their future careers.

Congrads all!! I will see you there in the fall!

Hey Guys,
Congrats to all of you recently added to the NYCOM pool. Just so all of you know, if you haven't already started looking for housing start ASAP. It's hell!! It's difficult and expensive. If anyone has any tips, please share. Good luck to those like myself... on the hunt for a home.

nyjph,

How did u get onto NYCOM's website for housing???

Krupa

I used Cortistan Realty in Glen Cove. Cortistan realty gives all NYCOM students a discount. She found me an apartment in 2 days! I got an apartment in Glen cove right by the school for 900.00 a month. It includes water, heat, electricity, air conditioning, and cable. It worked out really well. I know 900 sounds like allot, but for the area, it was a deal. So try her out.

Actually, $900 is a bit high for the area, unless you live alone. Most places with multiple bedrooms range in the $500-$700 range, plus utils. Popular towns to look in include Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Roslyn, Great Neck, Oyster Bay, Mineola, Greenvale, and Westbury. Try newsday.com or the NYCOM webboard. If you call student affairs they should be able to give you a password. I've noticed a bunch of first years-to- be on there already.

Dont buy any books until you get here. The dissection kit they tell you to buy is not needed. The anatomy lab has plenty of equipment, at least they did last year. Shop around for a microscope. Olympus will rent you one for around $600 through the school, but I bought a new, generic one online for $400. Works fine.

Enjoy yourselves between now and the start of school. Life certainly changes once you start.
