Hey, my husband came to college from Russia four years ago and when I showed him your aviator he went totally nostalgic too. We found the you tube clips and while I didn't get much out of it he loved it haha.

haha, im really glad to hear that.

Of course they did. Where else would they get it? They also have stuffed animals of cheburashka and I seriously wanted to get one, but I realized I would have nowhere to keep it 🙁 Which way do you spell Nu Pagodi on youtube to see the clips? I'm not sure how you would spell it on an American keyboard.

just type in nu pogodi

I was thinking about doing the combined program.

I di a minor in business admin at marist during my undergad time there so I think I would be a decent canidate for it but im sure there will be people started business and stuff like that.

As far as I know for the DO/MBA program you reapply after the first year of med school and they judge you based upon that and some of your undergrad stuff like the MCAT (which I totally don't think is fair, just be you can score well in physical sciences has NOTHING to do with getting an MBA nor should it)

Ok sorry, I feel better that I got my little rant in for the day

its no fair that all the russians are NYCOM... I am gonna be the only russian in CCOM??? are there no russian in Chicago?? 🙂

If your going into private practice im sure that MBA would be a godsend. Also if you wanted to get promoted as a drector or some fancy person in a hospital and such

I also noticed that you have to have taken some accounting and economics classes in the past so I guess they arent willing to take people on simply bc they think it sounds cool

I also hear that a lot of people do the fellowships there 27 applicants for 20 spots. from what I read you help teach anatomy and no a year of neurology research at NYCOM

Hey guys me and a friend of mine are both goign to NYCOM (class of 2011). We both went Marist College and decided that bc we know that we are not psycho that we should try to get an apartment together. One guy one girl (not going out or f*** buddies, just friends) so we are looking for guys or girls. We are looking to live CLOSE to NYCOM and defintly on long island. We are looking to spend 500-800 a piece which we can do if we get another 1-3 roomates. Neither of us are antisocial mediclones, but we arent slacker geniuses either. We study hard but also know how to have a good time. We both have good families and groups of friends so we wont be clingy onto you (if you dont like to be that social). Getting rent paid shouldnt be inconsistent or anything like that.

Both of us are young (22), unmarried, no kids or anything like that. were just looking for a normal first year NYCOM student who isnt an A-hole.

Respond to the thread with questions/ interests or you could private emssage me for more info

Speaking of Russian crowd, I just came back from a Russian restaurant for my sister's birthday. It was hilarious, especially because a lot of Americans came to the party and tey had no clue what was going on. The singers dressed up in these crazy costumes, sang English songs with a really bad accent (Mambo #5 with a Russian accent anyone?) and kept the Vodka flowing. I haven't gone to one of those in a while, it was such a trip. Maybe before the summer ends we should have a NYCOM get together at one of those Russian restaurants.

did you go to national by any chance?

oooh i really hope i get into NYCOM too so i can join you all!! one of my very good friends is russian (privet!), and she calls me her honorary russian since my name is russian (sasha).

one other quick question. anyone here accepted as an out-of-stater yet? i'm in nj, close enough!!

Yea I did. Were you there too? It was fun though, I love seeing the looks on the American's faces.

not the day you were, but I have been there before, so I know about the mambo #5, lol.

So it looks like there will be a number of Russians in NYCOM. Out of curiosity, I wonder what is the percentage on that.

I mean Fafsa

Trying to keep the thread alive!

Has anyone started to fill this out yet...any 2010ers have any advice? Unfortunately, I have 2 w-2s and 1 1099 this year and have yet to get any of them to file my taxes.
Is earlier better even if you are missing info?
Thanks

I have a random question... does anyone know when classes start? I saw that the current first year students had their orientation on Aug 21 st. and I'm assuming classes started shortly after...? If anyone knows anything about these dates please share! 🙂 Oh and CONGRATS to everyone who has been accepted thus far. I interviewed on Dec. 12th and heard the next week! See you all in the fall!

wow you're starting early! i am still waiting to hear back on a few schools, so i'm gonna start all that stuff once i'm 100% certain on where i'll go.

Can't you send the info to a few schools? Right now, I'm going to NYOM, but I'm on the "active consideration" list at a school I would rather go to, and I'm planning on sending hte info to both, as well as a few others I haven't heard from. I remember doing this for undergrad, designating a few colleges to send it to.

Although my question is do we file a renewal FAFSA or a new FAFSA? I didn't fill out a FAFSA for the 06-07 year since I'm not in school now. Any idea?

musiclink, out of curiosity, where did you do your undergrad?

Hey, I'm a 2010 who was board and decided to scan the webboard and see if the 2011 board was up yet. Congratulations to everyone who got in.

Answering the question about classes starting...We had orientation on august 21 and classes started on august 22nd. They got us up to speed very quickly, almost too quickly it seemed. Take it serious from that first day of class. The worst thing you can do at NYCOM is fall behind. If you do a little bit of work every day you won't ever feel really bogged down except for maybe the weekend before a test. If you relax and fall a bit behind you'll feel bogged down and feel like you'll never catch up.

For the most part the school runs pretty smoothly with the exception of a few late powerpoints and a couple of not so excellent lecturers. Most of the faculty is very nice and available for help whether you need it. Also, streaming is the greatest thing ever (although the school is trying to somehow do away with it to an extent because more people are streaming than going to class.) Streaming allows you to (re)watch confusing lectures and pause, slow down or even speed up a few lecturers who talk like Ben Stein. If you've gotten into NYCOM, be proud of yourselves. As long as you work hard it means you'll become doctors. Enjoy the rest of this year though since it's really the last time you'll be free for a very long time.

I will put my deposit on January 29th, I will be oficially in 🙂
Class 2011 here I come.

thanks for the honest feedback. it's good to have an idea of what i'm getting myself into! by the way, are your summers free at all? do most people stay in NY and work, or can you at least take a month to relax/travel, etc?

you get a lot of breaks.

you have about 10 weeks of summer after your 1st year.

after your 2nd year you have 4-6 weeks off and then start 3rd year rotations after 4th of july. this is the time you use to prep and take Step 1/Comlex 1.

we get the usual school holidays during year 1 and 2: winter break about 10 days, thanksgiving break start tue/wed, spring break is about 10 days i think, legal holidays, etc.

during 3rd year the rotations end around holidays so you still have a one week break around new years, 4th july, etc. We take shelf exams but i'm not sure if it is done during these breaks.

i'm not sure what most people are doing in the summer. myself and other 1st years seem undecided at this point. NYCOM has a summer research program (clinical and lab) where they link you up with research programs, clinics, professors, etc. It seems to be expanding yearly and is one of the reasons I chose NYCOM. so research opportunities are available with stipends. you could find shadowing and research opportunities on your own as well but it is nice to know that NYCOM has a program in place to facilitate the process.

Some lecturers that come to NYCOM are open to NYCOM students visiting their program. some of the lecturers are program directors.

Are any of the summer research experiences international? Do students who are interested in international health find their own opportunities?

Thanks for all of the helpful info - you and many of the other 2010ers have been really helpful.

I was wondering if any of the 2010ers could tell me how much I can expect to pay for housing if i opted to live by myself? As for apartment searching, I was looking at the area just to see if i could get a feel of some of the prices and what not around the school but couldn't find too many places. Will more apartments open up closer to the beginning of the school year? And when do you suggest we start looking for housing? I'd appreciate for anything you guys could tell me. Thanks!

Getting a place by yourself is not recommended if you're going to be living on loans. It's very expensive out here. In decent neighborhoods for a 1BR, you can prolly expect to pay around $850-1100; 2BR prolly about $1400-2k; 3 BR $1650 - 2700. These don't include utils. You should start looking early; I'd recommend around May. If you wait till August, only lousy apartments will be left. Places may be posted early; especially if they're rented by students, b/c they have probably informed the landlord in advance they are moving out. Use craig list; plus NYCOM will give you info on places.

If you wanna stay very close to school (< 10 min) look in roslyn, hicksville, east hills, florham park, glen cove, sea cliff, old westbury to name a few. Good luck on your hunt.

Does anyone know the orienation and start date for the class of 2011?

Ok so I got into NYCOM today but now im a bit worried. I have an AZCOM interview next week and Mare Island after that. I was leaning towards PCOM and drexel but havent heard from them yet. Should I send in my deposit?! Should I cancel my other interviews?! I hate making tough decisions!

I decided to go to my other interviews after putting the deposit down. Because it is hard to really know the school until you have seen it. I will most likely go to NYCOM unless they really wow me. It is just a personal decision about whether you want to spend the money to go to the other interviews. I think it would be unwise to not put the NYCOM deposit down unless you have another acceptance. You never now what the outcome of your other interviews will be. Good luck and Congrats on NYCOM.

Thanks for the advice! I guess ure right I'll send in the deposit but I'll rank the schools I should spend money to go to. I mean for 1500 bucks u can get a 50 inch lcd tv for ur apt....! So my ranking becomes

Drexel
PCOM
NYCOM

not sure where AZCOM and western uni stand in the list. 😕

can any current students tell us of the changes we might be expecting (curriculum, rotations, etc.)? btw, did the new gym open up yet and if it did, how is it?

gym did not open yet. curriculum changes are pending. Hopefully the gym is not a big selling point for you since there are about 550-600 students between 1st and 2nd year.

There is an NYIT gym across the parking lot about a 5 minute walk away from NYCOM 1, 2, or 3 buildings.

In terms of other changes...

They are apparently going to drop the retest policy. This is going to be a dramatic change if it goes through for a number of reasons.

Right now if you fail a test you can take a retest one week later. If you fail that you must make up the thread over the summer.

Now, the idea of not being able to retake a test drops a big comfort zone but hopefully you don't fail any tests and if you work hard enough you really should be able to do enough to pass. There are 3 big possible problems though with the possible new system.

1. If for some reason you are very sick or just can't make it to the test...does that mean you'll have to retake the thread over the summer? That's just not very fair if that's the case.

2. They may be starting to test more frequently (like every monday or every other monday). This means that maybe they'll average all of the tests together for a thread to see if you passed. The one big problem with that is actually a bigger problem for 2nd year students because it will give you less leeway to study for the boards.

3. Currently, if you fail a practical examination you have to retake the practical exam. They're not sure what they would do with the supposed new policy regarding this but it would be extremely disappointing in my opinion to do well on the written exam and then fail an OMM practical because you misdiagnosed a dysfunction in someone. Some of the OMM practicals are unfair as is because some students have more obvious dysfunctions to diagnose than others so a lot of it depends on who you have to diagnose. If you are very good with your OMM stuff it shouldn't be a problem but you can know it well and still misdiagnose someone.

Anyway, we're still not sure exactly what the school is going to be doing with the new retesting policy. I expect the curriculum though is going to be much the same in the sense that it's going to be systems based. I really like the systems based thread so far except for the fact that we've had very little histology at the present time.

We started off with fundamentals (this thread should be somewhat revised). Then we did musculoskeletal (in my opinion it was an excellently run thread). Now we're in the middle of nervous system and behavior which includes psychiatry lectures. This is split into 3 parts and when we're done with the 3rd part in March we do Immunology/hematology. Then we finish off the year with integumentary system.

Hope that helps.

You guys started with fundamentals of what? What did you study when you first started ( I mean first semester)?

Fundamentals exposes you to all of the basic sciences so you have a foundation to build on for the systems based curriculum. It's like reading the first 3 chapters of all the subjects. biochem, Anatomy, histology, embryology, pathology, physiology, pharm, Micro, OMM, etc were all covered.

You guys started with fundamentals of what? What did you study when you first started ( I mean first semester)?

Fundamentals could probably be eliminated if they rework the syllabus correctly.

I have a couple of ideas but I won't post them here. The problem with fundamentals is that you get exposed to everything and it was very difficult to know what you needed to learn and what you didn't need to learn. At first it seemed like 2 years of medical school crammed into 6 weeks and it was difficult to gauge what they were going to test. To be honest, everything you do in fundamentals you basically redo in medical school so it wasn't very necessary. There are definitely ways for them to fix this.

I had thought that the idea of the new policy was that they would DEFINITELY be averaging the grades togethers of threads with multiple exams. This would really be bad for all of us if they don't.

Is there anyone that actually likes the new policy? I think it is fine the way it is, personally. If someone fails an exam, yeah its bad but if you get to make it up a week later whats the big deal? You're still learning all the same information. You're still going to graduate knowing just as much as the person who passed the first time around with the grade you got the second time around. The excuse that people who retest miss the first week of the new system because they're studying the old material and therefore fail the second thread and are forced to retest again and so on....so what?? One fewer week of summer, not the end of the world. Is there truly a correlation of people who retest and take the boards a second time, I don't know. But from what I've heard the dean has said that our pass rate is pretty good, about average for all medical schools. I think they should leave things the way they are, it is what the students want and we are ultimately the ones who matter.

Has it been mentioned that the meeting that was set up by the administration for us to attend about this new policy was when we, the class of 2010, the only current NYCOM students affected by this policy, were taking an exam? How convienent for them  Don't get me wrong, I love NYCOM. It was my top choice school and I would not want to be anywhere else. But this new policy blows!

BOGUS! I feel like tests always come soon anyway. Taking an exam every 2 weeks will leave us no time to study for boards, and we'll constantly be stressed. BOO. When waiting until the summer to retake a course, you will have to re-learn everything again, as oppossed to a week later when the information is still fresh in your mind.

Instead of making changes that affect EVERYONE, how bout just spend more time on focusing on the kids that are failing. If someone consistently fails, how bout forcing them to attend class or other study groups or something along those lines until they can start passing exams again. Why not focus on helping those kids bring up their grades, rather than kick them out to raise our board scores. Giving constant tests to 2nd years may leave less time to study for boards and may have an effect on class of 2010 step 1 board scores; NYCOM needs to think carefully on this one before they make such drastic changes.

I'm not a fan of frequent exams/quizzes. I like Plasticman's idea. I don't know why they think that eliminating retakes and increasing the frequency of exams will make us better students.

If there are concerns about board scores then how about making exams more board relevant and allowing professors to say the "B" word during their letures. lol!

Amen to that! What is wrong with teaching for the boards, considering our board scores weigh heavily in determining what residency we can acquire? AZCOM teaches for the boards and I think they have something like a 95% first time step 1 pass rate. It is so annoying that they have to say that disclaimer everytime before they talk about boards, "The Dean doesn't want me to talk about boards, but...[insert boards info here]."
