NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's a good chance, but I'm going to NSU-COM on Monday for an interview the following day, and I love that school so if I get in there, that may change things.

You interviewed at NYCOM on the 12th too, right?? If you wouldn't mind, please describe yourself so I can put a "name" with a face lol.

Hey, first-time poster, long-time reader.

First of all, I must say that this site has been nothing less than an incredibly useful resource for me and it has gotten me past much of this strenuous period called the application cycle. 😀

Anyway, NYCOM is my first choice and I interviewed there back on November 11th. Long story short, I can't say my interview went too well; I didn't feel too good afterwards, to say the least.

Fast forward to yesterday. My brother (an alumnus of NYCOM) called the Admissions Office to speak on my behalf. He was told by the lady he spoke to that a letter was sent out to me the day before (Wednesday). After being a little persistent, he managed to get her to say "it's not bad news".

Now normally I would be very happy to hear that, but I thought into the wording. "Not bad news" doesn't mean an acceptance, it means no rejection, so now I am dreadfully afraid of a waitlist. So my question is: does NYCOM send out waitlists this early in their admissions cycle? Or am I just being the usual neurotic pre-med?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your time! 🙂

probably reading way too much into it. i don't think anyone got waitlisted so early in the cycle last year. "not bad news" sounds like a nice unofficial way to say "youre in" without blatantly saying it so as to keep it "official." good luck let us know how it turns out.

why was your interview bad btw?? our interviews are usually ez mode...

It wasn't the interviewer that made it feel off, it was myself. The interviewer was very nice and didn't ask any difficult questions; in that sense, it was easy. However, I feel I acted a bit too nervous and stammered too much during my answers.

This was actually my third interview. I interviewed at LECOM-Erie and WVSOM before (and got accepted to both 😀), so I suppose my interviews couldn't have been that bad. But since NYCOM was the most important interview to me in my mind, I guess I got too self-conscious and let my nerves get to me.

I hope you're right that I'm thinking too far into this!

I agree, you are thinking way into this. I could understand your concerns if you were interviewed in March-April or what not but you were one of the few to interview in the first two weeks! If I was you, I would take that as an acceptance!

I agree that you're psyching yourself out. The admissions officer absolutely CANNOT give any "official" news to anyone but you. When I called yesterday, she made me give my social, address, and other means of identification before telling me that I was accepted, just to make sure it was me. You'll probably get the good news this coming week. 🙂

Thanks for all the constructive responses. I feel much better now. 😛

I'm hoping that maybe I'll receive that piece of mail today. LECOM wants a deposit by the 15th so I need to know soon!

I suppose I should have called the admissions office yesterday. I just couldn't think of a good-enough reason to do so. In any case, I'll keep you guys updated.

Are you guys definitely going to NYCOM?

Wow I received my letter already!!! Start checking your mail, guys!!!

(I'm also right on LI so their mail would get to me very quickly.)

awesome! i had a feeling we were going to start receiving it this saturday. I probably wont hear back from NYCOM today since i'm in Virginia at the moment, but definitely good to know decisions are coming next week!

Semicolon, I am 80% sure I will be attending if I am admitted. But its going to be tough letting go of VCOM... I absolutely loved their school too. But can't beat the location of NYCOM. Not to mention I will only be 30 minutes away from home!

I'm very upset; I just checked my mail and there wasn't anything from NYCOM today. If they sent it out Wednesday, it should have definitely been here (I'm from Brooklyn). I guess it's called "snail mail" for a reason.

This wait is killing me!

I think they're mistaken. They only just made decisions on Thursday so my thoughts are that they started printing up decisions that afternoon and threw them in the mail but the post office didnt even pick them up until Friday morning.

Hope you're right. In that case, I should have notice on Monday. :xf:

Congrats on your acceptance, tourniquet!

Actually, Semicolon was right.I just got my acceptance letter and it written on December 3rd.

Semicolon, you should be receiving letter today. Those in NYC will get their's today. Unless you were waitlisted of course....

The lady said that my letter was sent out Wednesday. Why would a waitlist take longer than an acceptance to arrive?

Now I'm freaking out. :scared:

I interviewed on the 11th. has anyone started a facebook group yet? that'll help put names to faces.

That's ridiculous. Perhaps decisions were made on Wednesday and were dated as such. However, if you look on the previous page, they specifically told us at the admissions office that they were starting to send out letters Thursday afternoon and would "continue to do so" the following day, on Friday. Just because someone did not receive their letter yet it does not mean they were waitlisted. Please don't start freaking out people unnecessarily. No offense to you at all. I just know how it feels to be completely freaking out and I'm confident that those who interviewed during the first two weeks have an excellent shot. They interview their top picks those two weeks.

Semicolon, I'm sure you will receive something soon.

Also, although decisions were possibly made on Wednesday, the Dean has to sign off on/approve every decision afterward.

Also, if I was waitlisted, would they at least have the courtesy to let me know so I can end this dreadful waiting? I have already almost come to terms with the fact that I didn't make the cut, just have that little glimmer of unsubstantiated hope that I am sure will be wiped out when I get the waitlist letter.

Don't know why I quoted you there drandwife, it was just a general question.

Why have you come to terms with not making the cut?? You have absolutely no reason to think you didn't get accepted. Just wait it out until next week and I am sure that you will hear something. They just started sending letters, and it never happens so that EVERYONE receives the letter on the same exact day. So try to just take a deep breath and have confidence in yourself. I'm sure you are 100% fine.

I feel the EXACT same way. These past three weeks have been spent trying to accept the worst-case scenario. I just want my closure.

Thank you for clearing that up, futuredrandwife. 🙂

The lady DID say that it was "sent out" Wednesday. Maybe she meant the Dean? Who knows. It's Monday or I'm calling!

Hope so. Thanks for the kind words. I guess if it doesn't come Monday then I should worry. At least I'll be in sunny Florida at that time. It would really suck and I would be very surprised if I didn't get into NYCOM, we will see.

I'm also in Brooklyn and I got mine today. I'm not aware that NYCOM mails their letters in batches. May be they do. If you don't get your letter by Tuesday, call the school and ask about your stats.

The letter was personalized and signed (by the Dean) on December 3rd. I don't know how they would have done that if the Dean had not approved of the adcom decisions earlier not afterwards.

Secondly, I wasn't aware that NYCOM sends out their letters in batches. If they are, then I will advise Semicolon to wait till Tuesday to see if the letter arrives. If it doesn't, then he should call to find out his stats. Being in-state, I think he has a great shot.

just got my acceptance letter today as well!I interviewed on Nov 11th......congrats to everyone whose received acceptances and I hope the best for anyone who is still waiting

I’m waiting on an interview invite… Is NYCOM highly selective or slow in their application process? They received my primary mid September.

Hey what about drwilson?

I assume you and me might just be in a similar situation. When did you interview?
The 6th. The only possibility that I can think of is that the letters just simply didn't get to us yet. The lady told you that "it's not bad news," so I am assuming you are in and just haven't recieved confirmation in the mail. Then again if other people in Brooklyn got it then we should have too, I guess. I don't really know how the postal service works. I am from Coney Island, which is kind of far. I don't know. I am going to go get drunk tonight. This is too much for me, lol.

I would think that is the case. I live in Sheepshead Bay, which is relatively close to Coney Island, so perhaps our part of Brooklyn simply didn't get any love today. You can't really trust the postal service to be too efficient.

Very possible. All I know is that I will be hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Good luck.

I got my letter too and it was signed and personalized by Rodika Zaika, the Director of Admissions. If I am not mistaken, the Dean still has to approve it the following day. I called Thursday morning and was told nothing had been sent. By that afternoon, we were told letters were just starting to be sent that day and would continue to be sent the very next day (see previous page). So that would mean that some would receive them on Saturday and some would receive them the following business day, if lucky. Everyone just please try and sit tight. I know it's so hard but try not to freak out. If you interviewed during those first two weeks, they really want you at that school.

Are you getting it at your NY or your VA address?

im expecting to hear from my virginia address. But either way, this is way too early to be worrying. If we don't hear anything next week, then we should be worried! Right now, its only the beginning!
