NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Unfortunately, every year gets more and more competitive. With that said, don't start worrying yet. NYCOM started much later than the other schools and interviews up till April/May. There's still time! Good luck in this application cycle 🙂

Being complete in October isn't really that early...people began scheduling interviews in October. I don't want to be negative but thats what happens when the apps aren't in early

I'm sure there's still hope if your stats are solid though, gl.

^^ true, nomembername brings up a valid point. in october, i already had my interview scheduled, so you are a bit late in the game, but not so late since NYCOM interviews well into April. Maybe you can start worrying at the end of February if you hear nothing by then.

Hey guys...i just had a few questions I wanted to clear up before going on my interview...
1. for the LDB and DPC pathways ...is there a professor present for the DPC one or is it just student based?- and do you get to change groups are a subject or you are with the same group?
2. what kind of clinical experience is offered in the first 2 years? ( I was reading something about the mentor project if anyone has any info on that )

1. It is my understanding that for DBC/PBL there is a professor there who guides the students and keeps them on topic. It is also my understanding that you rotate your groups so you're not always with the same people.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong though.

Engineeredout was right that the groups rotate so that you get to eventually work with everyone in the program. However, I believe they told us that there would be two faculty members during the DPC sessions.

To answer your second question, you get plenty of clinical experience. This is taken from the official site, as part of the coursework:

"A series of courses in Clinical Sciences, including didactic and laboratory experiences in osteopathic manipulative medicine and physical diagnosis. The fundamentals of the doctor-patient relationship are addressed through involvement with community-based physician mentors (Clinical Practicum), as well as experiences with standardized and simulated patients in the Institute for Clinical Competence."

hey semicolon, are you planning on applying to DPC? I'm thinking about applying to it, but im not certain yet. hahaha, I sat in on a PBL class before at bradenton, and it was very very impressive. It was almost like watching an episode of house. I have no doubt that PBL will give a very solid education. I think it is something everyone should at least consider. It was really no surprise when I learned that bradenton has one of the highest complex pass rate among US DO schools!

I already applied to it a few weeks back. 😀

It was a very hard choice for me, but when I went to interview, I remember a tour guide told me to apply as long as I thought it might POTENTIALLY be good for me...so I did. If I don't like it or if I change my mind before school starts, I'll transfer into the lecture curriculum.

I'm still not sure if it would be right for me. I interviewed at Erie and was offered the chance to be in a PBL session, but I had to catch a bus, so I missed it (and I regret that greatly). I'm going to have to see how it works out in the end.

I think you should go for it if you feel it might be right for you. Otherwise you might spend your time wondering "what if I tried it...". Good luck!

Accepted to NYCOM. GOing to be declining however in favor of LECOM-erie

Good luck to everyone!

Sorry to hear you won't be joining us. Good luck at Erie, dude! 👍

Just curious, though...why'd you pick Erie? I had to make the same decision; just wanna hear the other side of it. 🙂

I think I've posted it in this threat before, but basically, theres nothing wrong with the school itself. NYCOM seems great and I'm sure it will be a great education.

However:

#1) Long Island. I was born on Long Island. I grew up on Long Island. I went to college on Long Island. I NEED TO GET OUT. I need something different, change of scenery. My parents start talking about how if I go to NYCOM I can live at home and commute to it :help:. The only way I'd stay on Long Island is if the planets are aligned and an african tribal priest puts a blessing on me such that I get accepted to Stony Brook, because you can't pass up in-state tuition.

Which leads to

#2) Cost. If I didn't live at home, housing would be a large expense on top of the 50K that NYCOM charges. NYCOM Costs as much without housing/expenses as LECOM-erie costs with them.

Those are the top reasons.

Hey guys whats up. I just had a quick question or 2 regarding the NYCOM interview as I still have not heard from them and am getting a bit worried. I had a weaker undegrad GPA (2.8) so I did a MA in Biology (got a 3.2) and currently doing a post bacc (got a 3.4 last semester) and have alot of clinical experience as well as strong LoRs and a 29 on my MCAT. So far I have an interview at LECOM-Erie but I am waiting to hear from NYCOM and PCOM. I was hoping to hear back from NYCOM by now as I sent out my primaries way back in mid August. Should I still give it a bit of time or try and contact someone in admissions?

Anyone planning on going to NYCOM who is from Rockland County, NY?

You can contact the Admissions office; can't hurt to do so. However, I doubt that they would tell you anything of importance.

NYCOM is very unpredictable when it comes to its admissions process. Since they start their interviews so late (in November), their cycle goes on a bit later as well, so don't lose hope.

Good luck at your interview at Erie!

Hi All,

I just got accepted to NYCOM (interviewd on 1/21). I was accepted to UMDNJ-SOM back in Nov and I paid the deposit. Right now I was also waitlisted at one of the allopathic schools. NYCOM's deposit is a lot, I don't know if I should pay the deposit, cuz I already have one school in hand, and may also have a chance to get into the allo school. Any advice as to (1) which school would you choose UMDNJ vs NYCOM; (2) in this situation, should I pay the deposit to NYCOM?

Thank you!

Well never turn down a sure thing, so you should def put a deposit on one of the schools. It all comes down to where you could see yourself at for the next >4 years..whether it be the location, school, teachers, and/or community. You need to weigh the benefits of each (personally i would choose nycom hands down). Also did you interview on the 21st, because I didnt think they interviewed on wednesday's? correct me if im wrong goodluck with your decision and congrats on nycom!

A lot live in Glencove and other surrounding LI areas. Some of us live in Queens and some in Brooklyn even. It all depends on what is most important to you: location, cost, convenience, etc.

Congrats to those that were accepted! Be sure to join our facebook group if you decide to attend! 🙂

I got my acceptance letter today......🙂

Also got my acceptance letter on the 4th after interviewing Jan. 20th :soexcited:

I like doing interviews in the morning rather than the afternoon. I feel like if my tour happens before I interview, I'm just nervous and I'm not paying that much attention. But if I've gotten the interview over with, I can enjoy the tour and not worry.

Good luck, chocolate24!

haha, true. but i'm currently far from a morning person. i guess i better start getting used to it. i'm sending my deposit for nycom tomorrow. GL HF

OK, so how slow is this school really?
I haven't even received a "complete" message from them. Should I expect one? or just call and find out. Technically I should have been complete for over six weeks now.

I don't think they send any letter that you're complete. It would be best to call them up and ask.

I called them after 6 weeks and they said they do not send completed notices or anything. If you have been invited, you will receive it in the mail (snail mail). she wouldnt tell me over the phone either. which sucks.

They're very secretive. They talk to you as if they're storing an alien spacecraft in their basement.

For the NYCOM secondary do i have to fit everything on the page provided or can i do an attachment?

so i cant remember from the interview..does nycom have a dress code for lecture? the website says see handbook and the handbook doesnt say anything.. just curious

No. People wear whatever they want to lecture; there's only a dress code for anatomy lab, OMM and the ICC.

Just received NYcom interview invitation letter. Finally..so happy!! Reduced a lot of pressure for Touro interview tomorrow. Still wish me good luck tomorrow in Touro.

when did you complete your application?

good luck daniel! I'm sure you will do great. You look golden on paper so just show them your personality and try to actually enjoy the interview. They are pretty laid back and actually very conversational. They just want to get to know you since they already know you are very capable academically. good luck and keep us updated!
