NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

...is getting the letter is almost synonymous with getting an acceptance for Med-Prep...

As far as I have been informed, the short answer is yes! However, according to my friend, you would have to send the application slip within the deadline. Then, you should be fine!

...whether if I am required to attend NYCOM upon successful completion of the program? I really like to attend the program and NYCOM is one of my top choices; however, I would like to leave my options open for future possibilities.

That's the 1 billion dollars question. I am not sure if you sign any contracts. However, I was given the name of the person in charge of this program, Ms. Patricia. Why don't you acquire for us and inform the rest of us. Here is her info:

hey stone, if you don't mind me asking, when did you interview and how long did they take to respond back?

Hey guys..I was just wondering if anyone out there knew what the average mcat was for the latest acceptance pool at NYCOM. Ive tried looking around different places but cant really seem to come to a definitive answer.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew about how NYCOM is looking in the upcoming future in terms of how professors are and with Hofstra opening a medical schools.
Thanks in advance for any help

My advisor told me it was around 27 or 28 last year. I am not sure about this year, but should be around the same area.

got envelope with good-news letter today (saturday 2/13)...interviewed last wk of january. excited!

Hey all, does anyone know if there is a way to check the status of your application other then calling?

I called the other day, and while I understand the admissions office probably gets hundreds of calls a day about the same thing, the woman on the phone was kind of rude.

I asked if there was anyway to check the status of my application, and she said that if I submitted my primary and secondary then it was complete.

If I was rejected would I get a letter, or just sit in limbo?

Did anyone here interview for HCOP at NYCOM before Feb 4th and heard back something? Thanks in advance.

Interviewed on Jan 28, received my acceptance late last week.

It's exciting, for sure, but the tuition is so darn high. I will most likely end up withdrawing. Hope the spot goes to one of you.

Interviewed back in November for direct acceptance, but, needless to say, I did not get accepted; however, I was voted in to apply for HCOP-MED PREP which I consider is the better of the two. According to robu08, that means acceptance to HCOP-PREP program. btw, I don't think there is such a thing as interview for HCOP.

Thanks bowlin123 for the reply. The reason I felt that the interview was for HCOP was because after I submitted my secondary app I got an e mail about submitting my tax file info and HCOP. And a month from that e-mail I got an interview date. At the interview I spoke to a lady at the admissions office who said my interview was for the HCOP program. Thats why I was a bit confused. Also did you hear back from HCOP as accepted to their program? Thanks.

I was complete mid-Jan and I got told the same thing when I called, kind of sucks cause the school is 15mins from my home. Only thing keeping me sane is getting interviews at other places.

And yea there is no other way to check the status other than calling.

I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted has received the financial aid package or if anyone knows when they are supposed to send it out?

Yea I also gotta start doing FA stuff. When are we getting these?

Has any accepted student who applied to the DPC curriculum been accepted to this or heard anything about it?
I sent in my one page application form but haven't heard anything. I sort of assume they accept anyone who applies with a legitimate reason from what I heard at my interview day but wasn't 100% sure if that was true. Any thoughts?

I also applied to the DPC program and have not heard anything. I actually heard on my interview day that the program is pretty competitive. My interviewer actually told me that about half of the entering class will apply for the program. I am not sure if anyone else heard this. It actually worried me because I am really interested in PBL. Congrats on getting in! 🙂

Has anyone who interviewed the week of 2/1 heard back yet?

Has anyone who sent in their tax forms for the HCOP program heard back from NYCOM re: decision on their app yet?

I called about a week ago and Lois (or Lisa) said that they were in the middle of making decisions.

I did. I received a letter stating that I was voted in by AdCom to apply for HCOP-MED PREP, which according to various sources (granted that I return the application in a timely manner) means automatic acceptance to NYCOM once I successfully completed their required summer classes.

Got my medprep letter TODAY...I had basically given up hope. I am definitely going to do it.

Congrats! Now we need to find out whether if we need to sign a contract or are bound to attend NYCOM once we successfully completed the program. I will definitely ask once my acceptance to the program is formal. If you can find out, that's also great!

I called the admissions office after I received my letter to ask her some questions, and she mentioned to me that in the past, some people, after completing the program and being accepted, had declined the acceptance and gone to another school. So I'm guessing we won't have to sign any sort of contract. This is just speculation, though, since I didn't DIRECTLY ask her that question.

I have an interview at NYCOM on 3/10 at 11am but am coming in from Brooklyn and am not sure how to get there since I don't have a ride . Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks 🙂

Well if you are coming from brooklyn it isn't too far. Ask a family member or friend, significant other etc. I asked my dad for a ride... last thing you want is get stressed about traffic and getting lost. Good luck on the interview! its really laid back :meanie:

Is NYCOM Problem Based Learning, Traditional Lectures, or integrated?

Do students like the medical education there? Is the library nice?
Do students feel that they are getting a worthy, challenging medical education?
I am applying this summer, so just wanted to see what all of you thought about the school and your impressions....

I know that NYCOM is one of the better DO schools out there, on par with PCOM and NOVA.

Thanks everyone and good luck!

It's integrated I guess. There is a DPC (Doctor-Patient Continuum) track and the traditional lecture style.

The library wasn't too impressive, from what I saw. It seemed small and cramped.

The medical education you will receive at NYCOM is definitely one of the best, IMO. The coursework is rigorous and they make sure you know your stuff in and out.

Interviewed 2/4. Recieved my acceptance today! My number 1 school.

I interviewed on 2/4 during the afternoon session. I looked at "SDF1"'s post and told my dad to check the mail...and I got accepted!! 👍 Came in big white envelope so you won't miss it.

I have been on SDN looking at these posts for years and I can say that it is great to finally post a success story.

Judging by the pattern of questions on SDN, I will answer to your curiosities.

1) I am OOS. New Jersey.
2) B.S from Rutgers University - Biological Science (Quantitative Biology concentration) - took advanced and graduate classes in mathematics and quantitative biology.
3) Went to community college for two years. Did ALL (Biology 1+2, Chemistry 1+2, Organic 1+2, Physics 1+2 English 1+2, Psychology, and Sociology...that are the requirements huh? 😛) pre-medical requirements there.
4) cGPA: 3.65 higher science than non-science with total of 159 credits over 5 years
5) 4 years of volunteering
6) 2nd author on paper in quantitative ecology...near complete
7) MCAT: VR: 6 😍(haha) PS:9 BS:10 Writing: Q

So I think this covers most of the questions...

Thank you for everybody here on SDN for fueling my multiple obsessions. These years have been rough, but let me tell you all, it is possible. If you have any questions, you can feel free to PM me.

PS: TO SDF1

We might know each other...did you interviewed in the morning or afternoon session? I was one of the three eastern Asian men in the group and the only one from Rutgers.

Hey, I remember you! the yoo guy right? Congrats, I still haven't hear anything...really scared!!

Thanks. Do you or does anyone know what the cadaver-to-student ratio is? Is it a reasonable number?

Are students happy at NYCOM? I used to see posts on SDN about how unhappy people were with the school and cirriculum... Is that still the case or has NYCOM changed their ways?

Thanks everyone and good luck/congrats to all.

I'm not sure why you're asking these questions to those that have not even gone to NYCOM yet, lol. They're great questions to ask if you get an interview, however.

NYCOM has two tracts: lecture-discussion based (which is systems-based lecture) and DPC (problem based learning). The vast majority of students will be in the lecture tract.

The library is small considering the class sizes, but there's the option to use the undergrad library next door, which usually has more than enough room (and looks nicer). Either way, the NYCOM library is definitely not a strong point, but many make it work.

The cadaver-to-student ratio is 1:8. These 8 students are divided into 2 groups, where one group of 4 comes in early to do the dissection while the other group joins them later to learn from it. Most students don't follow this scheme and just come at the beginning of lab. I never felt the lab to be congested and I always had the chance to cut if I wanted to.

You seem to be very interested in the happiness of the students. Truth is, a student's happiness isn't based on the quality of the education as much as it is just the rigors of med school. It's hard. 😉 However, the education at NYCOM definitely has its kinks, and while I don't want to name names, there are a few select professors that will frustrate you. Most of them are understanding and will work with you, though. The administration is trying harder to get opinions from the class to improve the curriculum, and seems to listen to us. Whatever we complain about this year may be affecting the curriculum for the classes of '14 and onward. For instance, last year they complained about not having breaks between classes, so now my class has 10 minutes between classes (which is nice 😀). Depending on who you ask, you'll get varying opinions on the school.

Also, the tuition is a biiiiiit too steep if you ask me...

Yea I also gotta start doing FA stuff. When are we getting these?

I am considering calling them and asking when we should expect their FAFSA/Loans information packet to come. Ill let you guys know what info they give me. 🙂

I think its also possible to take the LIRR to get to NYCOM, but you should probably use Hopstop.com or the MTA website to look into that, but driving is probably the quickest and the least stressfull.

Good Luck!!

LOL yeah, I probably should have asked current students but ah well.
In any case, thank you very much for your opinion because to me, the quality of the education does depend on its rigor and if students are happy with the education they receive.

Thanks again!!

Hey Guys!

I need your help/advice. I'm interviewing at NYCOM this coming Thursday and its my first time going to New York. I get there Wednesday around 4pm. I'm just trying to decide which hotel I should stay at and most importantly what the best (and least expensive) way to get around would be. I've looked at the interview feedback and it seems that most people stay at the Norwich Inn. I'll be flying into JFK...

I would love to see New York city for even a little bit if possible. Also, according to the weather forecast it will be snowing, is this going to affect how I should be dressed for the interview? Thanks!

Hi, I was interviewed on the last week of January and recently called if there were any decisions made for me (people interviewed on February already received acceptance letters), but turns out they were still deciding on my application. Any suggestions what I should do to increase the chances of getting accepted?

Hey, I remember you! the yoo guy right? Congrats, I still haven't hear anything...really scared!!

No, I think I am the "yoo" guy that your thinking of, from Penn State. Wore a olive suite. Haha.

Did you have a DO letter? I have a similar MCAT and GPA but no interview invite. I applied Dec. 1st

Hey, ok my bad! Anyway, how are you? Did u hear anything yet? by the way i forgot to ask you at the interview day, are you from Bangladesh?

I did not have a DO letter nor an MD letter. I know, funny. I just never asked my doctor to write one for me. Lol I knew what I learned over the years so I didn't need a letter to confirm that.

I'm glad the "yoo" guy stepped forward. I was the one sitting to the left of him. (black suit with blue tie..)

I honestly thought I was gonna get waitlisted...considering I was out of state and my stats were not REALLY spectacular.

Anyway, ask anything else if you like!

Aptiva1988 - I remember u...I interviewed in am... I was the blond girl from Philly. I still haven't heard anything 🙁 I'm definitely going if accepted though....

Anyone else from 2/4 hear anything? accepted, rejected, med prerp waitlist?

i interviewd 2/4 in the am session.... Still waiting :xf:

You know that the post office doesn't start delivering until 7-8 am, right?

😉

I'm sure you'll get something today assuming they sent everyone's acceptances out at the same time.
