NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I am going to assume that being on the wait list is pretty much a rejection?

Has anyone heard otherwise?

Does anyone know how to increase chances of receiving admission?

Thanks

Well, I think a lot of people also withdraw their acceptances, especially in this next month or so. So I wouldn't take it as a rejection immediately.

👍

In the meantime, write and send the NYCOM admissions committee a letter of intent saying why you want to go to their school, and if accepted off the waitlist that you would 100% attend regardless of other possible or already obtained acceptances at other schools.

I was complete in January. Never heard anything else. Why haven't I gotten a rejection?

Hey whats up guys. I've been reading this forum for a while, and just recently registered. I don't want to interrupt anyone, but just wanted to say that I interviewed on 3/3/10 and just got an acceptance on friday 3/26/10. By any chance, does anyone know when the first semester begins?

I interviewed on 3/3 as well! But anyway, orientation usually starts in mid-August.

I'll be attending Med-Prep. Received the letter not too long ago myself. Hope to see each and every one of you guys/gals there.

As far as I know the ones who are interested in attending the Med-Prep program are:

Myself
Blueskies
Bowlin
Frankenpad

Step up if you're a Med-Prep'er! Don't be shy. We'll start a 'Minority Clan'. I kid, I kid. Hehe 👍

This is my first time posting but I have been following the forum for a while. I am also in the MedPrep boat. I had my parents submit their tax info and I have yet to get the 1 page med prep application everyone keeps referring to. Would anyone mind telling me what it entails so that I could be ready to send it out ASAP.

Thanks

if you have been reading this forum for awhile as you claimed, you should have been able to read a sample of such formal invitation (see pg 13).

Me and bowlin123 were having a discussion on a previous thread regarding whether accepted into Med Prep is an automatic admission into NYCOM. To support my argument that being accepted into MEd-Prep is in no way translated into acceptance into NYCOM, I went on to get a letter my friend received from NYCOM...Here it is

----------
Dear Mr. XXX:

Following review of your application, the Admissions Committee has voted to offer you the opportunity to apply to the Pre-Matriculation Educational Program "MED Prep" at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Acceptance into Mep Prep is reserved for students that the Admissions Committee feels are extremely motivated and have potential for pursuing a career in medicine, but have not successfully competed for direct acceptance to the College.

The six week program will be conducted from May 25th to July 2nd, 2010. Students who successfully complete the Med Prep Program will be considered for acceptance into the 2010 entering class.

There is no tuition requirement to attend Med Prep program. You may be eligible for a stipend from the New York State CSTEP program to cover expenses incurred. More specific information will be sent to students who apply.

Please return the enclosed form within seven days, as enrollment is limited.

Yours Truly,

Rodika Zaita
Director of Admissions

I was actually referring to the enclosed form that was indicated by you in your original post.

I am also in the MedPrep boat..

If i understand correctly, you have not been formally invited to apply to MedPrep. is that right? Did you have an interview yet?

From what i understand, NYCOM stops sending interview invite...fyi

I had my interview back in January and then I got a call from NYCOM admissions telling me that they needed my parents 2008 income tax. They said they needed it in regards to the Med Prep program.

In that case, i would have been frustrated! I would call the admission office and find out what is going! I heard people are even waitlisted for the MedPrep program. At least those people heard from the admissions committee...One more advise...If you happen to have the contact info of your interviewer, I would call, explain my situation, and ask for suggestion!

Just an update for what it is worth... I still haven't received anything after submitting my 1-page MedPrep application. Has anyone received any words from NYCOM after their MedPrep app submission?

Robu: Waitlisted for MedPrep? Oh no! How would one know? It's already April and classes will be starting in less than 2 months.

Yup, USB, i was surprised too. If you read a couple threads back, you would notice that some have been waitlisted for MedPrep! Believe it!!!

@robu: I have been reading this thread since I became somewhat active. I don't see anywhere in this thread after page 13 regarding being waitlisted after having submitted the 1-page MedPrep app. Can you point it out for me?

Apparently, it passes by you without noticing that...

see..post #822 dated 2.23 on pg 17

Thanks Robo058. I called NYCOM today and the kind secretary took a look at my file and said that I was on wait list for HCOP/medprep. bummer. I'll keep waiting. Cheers.

There it is! He interviewed on Feb 4th

Sorry FrankenPad, there might be a misunderstanding here. I got a paper for HCOP a while back that asked me to submit my parents tax info with in two weeks, someone else also posted the same letter on an earlier post. I then had my interview at NYCOM and finally now three weeks later I am on the wait list. I never received a one page form to fill out, so you might be at a different position. I hope this helps.

@Robu: As far as I understand Aptiva never received a 1-page Medprep app like some of us. S/he submitted the tax info, went to the interview and was waitlisted.

On a diff note... I'm in NY and it's freaking GORGEOUS outside!

That is a good point. However:

1) keep in mind that S/he called the admission office and they advised her that s/he had been waitlisted for MedPrep. His/Her words, not mime!

2)If you are waitlisted, I don't know why they would send you a formal invitation to fill out the Med Prep application. If you are waitlisted and if there are movement, i think they can give you a call and all you have to do is to show up. I think the application is all of a formality, nothing much! You can fill it out on the day of!

and I am from NYC too, gosh it is beautiful outside!

Does anyone know if the class is full yet or if people are still receiving acceptances?

SmithGrad-did you interview January 12? Were you the girl from Colorado....red hair...afternoon interview? I think I sat next to you during the financial aid presentation/talked to you for a little!

Well my name is Christina, ha! And there were only 3 girls, but I wore glasses, I don't know how else to differentiate myself, haha. Either way, glad to hear someone else that interviewed got in! But I'm positive it'll be in August, so I'm hoping to hit Vegas in July for my last hurrah 😀

Hi everyone! I am a 2010 Med-Prep'er... I interviewed in mid February and got the letter in the beginning of March. I sent back my form and I didn't hear anything back so I called and they told me I was in the program!!! 🙂 ....So if anyone doesn't hear anything back, I would just call them!

Anyone have an idea what day of the week Adcom usually meets?

Last i heard, it was on Fridays and one typically got the envelope by Mon (if you live close by), Tues or Wed...but they might change the day as they please!

I never sent in my parents income tax bc I didn't think I qualified and they didn't ask for it. Did anyone else have to submit their parents income tax?

Decisions are sent out in batches, not right after the adcom meets. I live very nearby and got my decision on a Friday, along with several others on the forum. So you really never know when you're going to get yours, just that it'll be sometime within a month, usually.

To fellow MEDPREP applicants: No information has been sent out yet, but I called and was told that I've been accepted to MEDPREP. I think as long as you sent in the form on time, you'd be accepted.

No I had black hair with brown highlights. I think the girl you are referring to both her parents were D.O.'s so she basically she's in. Her father taught her interviewer.

Well, I just called and the nice lady over the phone told me that whoever sent in the med-prep form is accepted into the program. That's great news!

I always get so nervous on the phone when I speak to NYCOM's admissions dept for some strange reason. 😛

USB stick: yup! that's true...

I am so excited/nervous about this program... I wish they would send out the packages soon so we know a little more details!

Yeah, that's me!! Haha. I love him, he's so nice.

Well if you plan it for as early in August as possible I'm sure you'll manage!

According to HCOP income guideline, isnt it rather low? For a household size of two, $27,380 (pre-tax) is still less than 2X the poverty level.

http://aspe.hhs.gov/POVERTY/09poverty.shtml 2009 Poverty Guidelinesaccording to the govt poverty level, household size two is $14,570

2X the poverty level is $29,140
3X the poverty level is $43,710
etc.

it looks like for a husband and wife having income around $27,000 are going hungry most of the time. and eating at soup kitchen.

let's say housing cost is $600 per month for household size 2
$600 x 12 = $7,200
housing is about 26% of the pre-tax income. it must be very difficult living, i think. especially in the NYC metro.

outrageous.

I called today and the woman told me they were sending out information regarding Med Prep within the next week. All I wanted to know was if they received everything and what my current status was. If I don't get in I have to send my info to post-bacc programs. 🙁

hey guys,

Has any one who interviewed during the week of 3/16 received a letter yet??

Still waiting, 3wks today! Were you in the morning group?

I was in the afternoon group. Which of the students did you do the tour with? Post when you receieve your letter. I have a feeling it is sometime this week! who knows maybe tomorrow..

Did you by any chance send in your deposit yet? If so, did NYCOM receive it yet? I mailed mine out last Tuesday and I called today and they still haven't received my stuff, idk whats going on 😕

Oh ok I still think I know who you were! You were sitting on the other side of the room from where I was.

Hey, does anyone have any good places for finding out information about loans, and all that good stuff lol? Also, Does anyone know of any important deadlines for NYCOM I should be aware of lol? Im pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing as of yet, been stalking the mailman last few days. Hoped to get something by today at least, then I thought maybe ADCOM didn't meet because of easter.

I'll be withdrawing, so hopefully one of you guys on the wl get my spot.

loved NYCOM, seems like a really great school, if I hadn't gotten one of my higher choices, along with a better financial package I would definately be there in august🙂

When is your letter dated? Are you in-state?

I interviewed on wk of 3/16-3/18, nothing in mail yet for me and NYCOM is 20 mins from my house.

I interviewed on the week of 3/16-3/18 also
Letter is dated April 5th
I live about ~10 mins away from NYCOM

I was also wait listed. I feel like a higher number of people were wait listed in that interview group on 3/16. Did we just interview for a wait list spot? How many do they take on the wait list any way?

Guess I should be expecting a the waitlist letter in next few days too. They were interviewing around 20 people the day I was there but we had a morning and afternoon session.

I haven't seen any march interviewee accepted on here and it was the last month of interviewing for NYCOM so I guess we were all there for waitlist spots🙁
