NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nothing. I also interviewed 2/22.

I don't know of anyone either. But what I did notice was that 2 weeks worth of interview groups usually receive decisions together. So I'm guessing that the last week in Feb and first week in March should all hear back around the same time. I'm also guessing it should be pretty soon- you guys have waited 3 weeks and some of us for 2 weeks. But then again, this is just my guess.

For you guys who have been accepted already, how long did it take to get all the other forms once you submit the deposit??? thanks!

1st year chiming in!

I agree with Christina on not buying any textbooks. Save your money for things to keep you alive and/or spend your money on USLME/Comlex review materials. Most of what you really need for lectures/DPR are already in the library. If you MUST have a copy then just photocopy the chapters or download the ebook over the net. In my experience so far... You'll forget most of what you read in textbooks since it goes into such details than what we're taught in lecture and the human brain can only hold so much in such a short period of time (we get tested every 2 weeks).

To be honest with you incomings. I'm more concerned with passing my exams than mastering minutia (bad, but it's true). It's nice to know it all, but at the same time you want to REMEMBER the details on each slides because that's what it's going to be tested on. You can know the detailed info in the textbook and sure it'll make ya feel smart, but if the answer choice isn't on the exam.. You're SOL. Anyway, NYCOM has a very, very strict 2 strikes and you're out policy and 50+ have already left the program either willingly or due to failing. Fail 2 blocks (Neuro system has 3 blocks... you get the point) and you're gone. I've been getting high 80's or low 90's on each of my exams so far with the way I'm approaching this. I probably know less than those who read books, but the time I'd spend reading textbooks I put into prepping for my USMLE/COMLEX. Textbook reading is very time consuming IMHO. But that's not to say my way is right and those who aren't doing what I'm doing are wrong. All I'm expressing is that this way works very well for me. To each their own I guess...

What I do recommend is KEEP THE LECTURE NOTES and take good f'ing notes for reference when you're in class or streaming. The prof spew lots of info when they speak, some are interesting and some aren't.

As for MedPrep. It's great! I'm a prepper and will most likely see you medprep guys for your summer experience. FYI, all of us prepper made it into the program last year. Anyone who is organized can pass med school. Don't try to act like a know it all or be a teacher's pet. Don't ask questions that are in the notes/obvious/try to look smart/irrelevent and don't be a GUNNER. Did I mentioned I hate those who think they're smarter/better than others? I can't stand those ****ers. Anyway, do your work, be logical, be reasonable, be likable, be helpful and have fun. Med school isn't hard. Work load is high, but the material isn't ground shattering. Learn to prioritize your time and you'll pass with flying colours. Believe me!

Instead of ranting like a monkey on coke... Just PM me if you have questions.

P.S. Forgot to mention. All the incoming will most likely get an iPod touch (32gb) like we did last year. So save your cash for food/gas/rent oinstead if you're looking for a new MP3 player.

No, the 8am-5pm everyday thing isn't totally true. During the first few blocks of the year, there will be quite a few 8-5 days per week. The first semester, because you're taking OMM and anatomy lab with lectures are rough.

Second semester is rough for different reasons. There's no more anatomy so you have less of those 8-5 days, but you enter the 3 month hell that I'm in right now, Nervous System & Behavior. But the schedule/workload is generally lighter once you get through the first half of first year. That being said, don't let me terrify you, it's do-able and way worse than it sounds - my classmates and I are still alive, after all.

OMM dress code is basically shorts for guys, and shorts & a tank top for girls. You usually wear scrubs over them and just undress depending on what part of the body you're working on that day. It sounds & feels super embarrassing the first few times, but after awhile you realize that everyone feels the same way and after awhile, everyone is too focused on learning the techniques, etc to care about what you look like in your OMM gear.

What's key? Don't spend all your money on books. Chances are you won't even use more than half of the recommended books - just get a copy of Grant's Dissector, a good anatomy atlas, and the anatomy text at first (we used Gray's Anatomy for Students, I don't know if they'll use it again next year).

I emailed the Financial Aid department asking for the NYCOM specific forms. This was the response I received yesterday:

Once the entire class of 2015 has been filled, the financial aid office will send out financial aid forms to all new students.
In the meanwhile you can complete your FAFSA if you have not done so at www.fafsa.ed.gov our school code is E00546.

Guess the class isn't full yet.

Thanks, I hope to get interview soon.

Congrats to all the acceptances!!! I haven't seen anyone post any rejections or getting waitlisted on this thread. I'm hoping this means that most people that interview get in.:xf: So does nycom send rejection letters or will you probably get waitlisted? Has anyone heard of someone getting a rejection letter or waitlisted this cycle so far???

It seems like they accept a good number of the students they interview.
I believe I've heard of like two people being wait listed. As far as rejections, from previous years, I think it's a silent rejection. Which kind of suck IMO.

Which address did NYCOM send an acceptance/correspondence letter to you guys? The "current address" or the "legal address" that we listed on the AACOMAS application? Thanks!

Current address and legal address are the same for me (as Im sure they are for most people here). Just call the school to ask.

Ah, see for me they are different ("current" is my school address and "legal" is my permanent home address). I will call them and ask. Thanks!

Is the silent rejections for pre-interview or post-interview applicants? I interviewed in December and haven't heard anything since then. I thought my interview went very well; the questions were easy and I answered them well. I called the admissions office and was told a decision was not yet made. Is anyone else in this position? 😕

I think they are both silent. Not 100% sure. If you interviewed in december and have not heard yet. I would not count on getting in. People who interviewed in the beginning of march have heard back. Call admissions and ask to speak to Ramon. He is the asst director of admissions.

Good luck.

i interviewed on march 1st and didnt recieve any letter yet. does anyone know if they send acceptances letters at separate times for a interview date? i saw how someone on this page had interviewd on 2/15 and got a letter postmarked 3/14. should i hold out hope still?

When I interviewed, we were told to wait four weeks. Since it is not four weeks, I think you should be patient.

Who interviewed you? You can PM, if you want. Just curious.

Hello! I just got my interview invitation (it's 4/13) and I couldn't be more excited! Any of you lucky ones already accepted have any advice?

Thanks!

Question to all: Which address does NYCOM send an acceptance/correspondence to? The current address or the legal address that was listed on the AACOMAS application?

I hope your interview went well! I received my acceptance letter at my current address and not my legal address.

Look at all of us Jersey acceptances. Represent!

There are a lot of Jersey people! Nice! I'm from CT, who else?! 😀

Congrats on your interview invite! The interview day itself is in fact very laid-back, as I am sure you've read on here. We got small presentations on financial aid, NYCOM in general, and then lunch with the ambassadors, all of whom were so nice and answered all of our questions. If all the students at NYCOM are as nice as them, I am so happy to have the chance to go here! My interview was a little bit stressful (he ended up asking some very detailed questions, and an ethical one), but if you just practice/know how to answer the age-old "why medicine?" and "why NYCOM?" kind of questions, you should be all set!

GOOD LUCK!
