NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
to anyone who is going to be interviewing...congrats! the interview is nothing to worry about...i was freaking out before mine and it turned out to be a breeze. like someone said before, just know how to answer "why medicine?" "why NYCOM?" and also, "why DO?" and make sure you know about the history of osteopathic medicine. i wasn't asked any one these questions, but my friend who interviewed was...during my interview i was only asked about my research experience and my shadowing/volunteering experiences. so review your secondary! and good luck!

hey - sorry i just remembered right before i got the interview invite i sent a letter of intent. i literally got the invitation like 4 days later.
Is there a specific format for such a letter?
I would like to write one.
Thanks

I don't know if there is, but I basically just wrote that i was interested in their program and why i thought it would be a good fit for me and what i felt i could contribute to NYCOM. If you have specific updates - that would be good - like you have more experience in something or you have better grades. i am not a student - so i dont have a newer transcript or anything, so i didnt add that type of information. i would suggest writing and either mailing it priority or maybe emailing it.

Hello! I just got my interview invitation (it's 4/13) and I couldn't be more excited! Any of you lucky ones already accepted have any advice?

Thanks!

- A

The interviews at NYCOM are typically chilled so you shouldn't be nervous going into the interview. It really does depend on your interviewer but as others have said, Know "Why Medicine" Why NYCOM" and especially "Why DO?" The interviewers dont have ur grades and MCAT score so dont feel like you need to raise them. But if they ask you, then be honest. Be prepared to have a question or two to ask your interviewer. They do have everything else so know your application well enough to answer anything they may ask.

I hope your interview went well! I received my acceptance letter at my current address and not my legal address.

GOOD LUCK!

That's so funny you say that, because when I called today the secretary said they send it to the permanent/legal address. I wish I could get a straight answer!!

It seems like they accept a good number of the students they interview.
I believe I've heard of like two people being wait listed. As far as rejections, from previous years, I think it's a silent rejection. Which kind of suck IMO.

Thanks for the response, thats horrible if its a silent rejection. So how long should you wait before calling to see if you were rejected?? Will they tell you that you were rejected??

I just recieved my acceptance letter in the mail!!!!!!! I guess I won't be needing to call to ask about a rejection, lol.

Interviewed: March 3
Accepted: March 21 (postmarked March 18)

Jersey Girl!!!!!!

I called the office and was told a letter was sent out on the 11th, which was returned undelivered. They sent it out again today. The secretary didn't want to say what kind of letter just that it was sent. When I ask if she could give me any info, she just asked "the letter was for an interview decision, right?" or something like that. To which I replied "yes" then she said it was mailed so I should know soon.

Hey guys, I just received an acceptance letter as well (interviewed on March 3rd). The acceptance letter was postmarked March 17th.

Congrats Jerseygirl-you and I interviewed on the same day. Do you mind me asking which applicant you are. I was (am) the 31 year old who was there (caucasian male).

Lee- I know it can be dangerous to get your hopes up, but I feel fairly confident that the letter they send you was an acceptance. I don't think NYCOM sends out letters after interviews unless they are acceptances.

Finally got the acceptance! Interviewed Feb 22. Dated March 14th. Another Jersey kid. NJ WINNING!!!

Just received my acceptance letter today, thank you Jesus Christ! That felt like it took forever. Interviewed 1/18, a long time I know. Whatever the case I am just glad to have stopped playing the waiting game. Good luck to everyone else who may be waiting on a decision, hopefully see you all in the fall.

Wow, some people have been waiting since 1/18. That is messed up. No doubt I would have lost hope. For those who have been accepted be sure to join f.b. group for nycom 2015 if your going to go.

Housing issues is a whole different can of worms. It is so damn expensive up their. 🙁 Certainly will be searching for roommates.

Hey theone1979 congrats to u 2. I'm pretty sure I know who u are. We did the afternoon interview. You are the ex- musician, right? We were in the same group for the tour and then we were in the same interview group with Dr.leheste. I was the spanish girl from south jersey.

Did anyone else from the march 1st morning group get accepted? We had an awesome group of people and despite the stress of the day I actually had a good time just hanging out and bull****ing between interviews.

Our group was AWESOME. Lol. Only having 1 interviewer for the whole morning made us all talk ourselves crazy in nervous anticipation.

I was the guy from Jersey that was obsessed with going downstairs to check out the bake sale.

LOL i remember you!! did you end up getting anything from the bake sale? i think they were still selling when we finished our tour... yeah i guess your right about our group being awesome, it was pretty funny when they were talking about jersey shore and the situation lol

99redballoons- it seems like 3/10 so far have gotten accepted from our group but i doubt everyone from our group is on sdn so maybe more of them were accepted!

Haha I never ended up going to the bake sale, didn't want to risk getting frosting on my suit or anything 👎. And yeah, whenever I mention I'm from Jersey the conversations automatically go to Jersey shore and how NJ just isn't like that.

I know 2 others from our group have been accepted, so I guess it's 5/10 so far.

I was so worried before the interview because I didn't know how full the class was but now it seems like there were still a lot of spots left.... or maybe our group was just too amazing to reject lol

interview - 3/2/11

accepted - 3/21/11 (postmark 3/17/11)

oooo that stings. I was in the morning 3/1 group. I was the brown kid. I still didnt recieve any letter. I called the admissions office this morning and they told me they I was still under review so im not that hopeful. I was hoping they would say that they sent a letter in the mail with the decision since that usually means an acceptance. The whole concept of silent rejections suck. You never know when to give up. Well its only been 3 weeks so i guess ill wait 5 until I lose all hope🙁

Congrats on your acceptance by the way👍

Hang in there. If you look through this thread, it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad. There have been people who've interviewed and heard back way later than others. So definitely don't lose hope yet.

I think I remember you. I believe you were like the 3rd one of us to show up for the morning.

Does anyone know how much financial aid is budgeted for housing at nycom?

Does anyone know how much financial aid is budgeted for housing at nycom?

As Much as you want to take out in loans...

Financial aid dosen't tell you what to take out, you make the calculations on your own and let them know what you want, and they help you take out that amount. The federal stafford loans will be short for tuition by about 2 grand (maybe more for your year). Past that amount you can take out gradplus loans for as much as you want. Try to take out as little as possible.

Rent in Glen Cove will run you about $650/month if you share a house with 1 or 2 other people. Gas is about $40-100/ month, Electric about $120, Cablevision triple play $89.95, but you split the bills with roommates. Health insurance will cost you about 4-5,000 per year. (you must have the schools health insurance, unless you have your parents, a spouse's, or medicaid.) Factor in food and gasoline.

Don't lose hope. It depends when your interviewer's report was submitted, and whichever other factors are involved with adcom meetings (certian members present).

You guys have been hearing back pretty fast, some extremely fast, and comparitively to other schools or even those of us who interviewed during the fall/winter it is a very short wait for recent interviews.

You'll be fine, stay positive. Be confident in yourself and your record and that it will reflect well and pay off shortly.

has anyone here gotten an acceptance to NYCOM without a letter of recommendation from a D.O.? thanks in advance 🙂
