NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

If one hasn't received an interview yet, it's not a bad sign right? They will still be giving out more? Thanks!

Same here CT resident grew up in NY went to NYU no interview yet, I think they do state by state but after NY I heard NJ and CT get priority (I would hope CT first since we have no DO school in the state lol)

I agree! I hope it comes to CT comes first since we don't have a DO option! :xf:

ahem... latecomer entering 😛

if i get into any school having applied THIS late and being an INTERNATIONAL student it wud be a miracle man!

anywayz.... guys i had a q... just submitting my primary (i know i know i am late!:scared::xf:) and had a q abt prerequisities for NYCOM: cani take the prereqs after submitting application? as in, is it necessary to have them completed before u apply?

and with a cgpa 3.59, probably around 3.4-3.5 sGPA.. MCAT 30S.. and a canadian citizen.. how much chance do i have applying to NYCOM this late?😱😕:scared:

Hey Everyone... NYCOM is starting its interviews on November 2nd. There will be 3 interview days per week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. With 2 interview groups on each Tuesday.

How did you find this out!? I live so close, I might go to the admissions office and beg for an interview. ahhhhhh

Hello Everyone,
I have a pretty average GPA (3.5) and decent extra curriculars. I was wondering if it was even still worth applying now since its late. I would have my primary in by thanksgiving minus my mcat. The only reason I was considering was because I saw that NYCOM is now accepting mcats from jan 2011 for fall 2011 admission. Keep in mind that I am a new state resident and an underrepresented minority. Should I even apply or wait until next year?

Thanks for the info!! Do you know when NYCOM will be sending out more interview invites?

WTF😕 Can anyone verify this?

Yup. I applied last year (currently a member of the class of 2014), and I didn't submit my secondary until the day of my interview - I brought in a paper copy and a print out of my receipt/proof that I paid the secondary application fee.

They might have changed THAT policy for this year, if people are getting invites without secondaries, then they're still sending out invites based on the AACOMAS application.

Hmmm so based on this news....is it even worth it to submit a secondary? Should one just wait until one received an interview invite?

Policy is slightly different this year. In years past, a secondary invite was also an interview invite - not necessarily true this year.

Maybe, but why risk it? Put yourself ahead of everyone so your complete and possibly get an earlier interview date. Not everyone who received the secondary has gotten interview invites, so I would suggest doing it and submitting it. You can't schedule the interview until its submitted anyway.

Yeah. I'm going to submit a secondary and hope they actually read it and consider me for an interview. :xf:I'm more than what my primary says I am.

Exactly. Its not a tough essay anyway, just why NYCOM mainly. Good luck!

I am a student at NYCOM, we overhear when interview groups are coming through.

For most questions I would refer to the NYCOM website. Nyit.edu/Nycom. Click on the admissions tab. The website says that for this year you will not be considered for admission without a secondary.

NYCOM needs to speed things up with the invites already lol

How do they go about preinterview rejections here? (I'm assuming I'm getting one 🙁

Judging from the posts on this thread, I don't see too much interview action going on. So maybe NYCOM hasn't gotten to you yet?I know they must have received tons of apps. you should not give up just yet....

Totally with you on that, Boss. This is getting kinda crazy, but, I guess we are all going to just have to wait and see.:xf:

Well, granted that they only started "sending" and "accepting" secondaries (though one could always had filled it out earlier, IMHO you're better off following their instructions) after Labor Day, and interview invites only began a few weeks ago, like you said, they probably have a lot of applications to go through right now. They also tend to interview late into the cycle, people shouldn't take anything to heart yet. It may also be true, like other posters have rumored about, that they focus on tri-state area applicants first. From what it sounded like last year, from people that I know who went through the process, things should pick up for nycom around December.

That's really tough for people who have NYCOM pegged as their first choice.

Oh well. Guess that's just the nature of the application process.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm hoping I hear back from NYCOM quick enough that I don't have to bite a $1000 deposit somewhere else, or at least have time to weigh the debate in my head before putting it down. Its definitely a downer if your first choice is NYCOM and sent everything in right away.

Just curious, how many people here from New York, New Jersey, or Conn. that submitted everything before October didn't receive an interview invite yet. There seems to be a lot of us.

I'm from NY and submitted 9/1, completed 9/7, heard nothing since then. 🙁

yeah i complete about a week after you and i havent heard back too. the guy from nycom even came to my school and took down my info and told me he would personally look at my app. still nothing haha

im from long island, ny...was complete around 9/20-ish and have not heard anything either. I have quite a few friends that go here who didnt interview until january, so there is still hope!!!

The secondary says to "list" all of the various work/research/volunteer experiences. Did you just list them or give a detailed explanation for each? I feel like I will be repeating myself a lot since it's all in the primary application.

I think I just listed mine. ....I mean its on the primary application anyway.

The silence from NYCOM is killing me! maybe they decided to skip a year or something jk

Hi Everyone:

I got an interview invitation scheduled on the 11th next week. I know NYCOM has given out very few invitations so far but I still want to give a shot to see who has interviewed already. If there is anyone, can you give me some advices???? I really need some heads up cause this will be my first interview:idea:
Anything would be appreciated!!!!!!

Also, good luck to everyone who has applied to this school👍

NYCOM has Interviewed 40 applicants so far this week alone.... When you go to your interview just relax, They are not going to try and stump you. Its just a way to see your thought process, see how you interact with people etc... Also they want to make sure you are what your application says you are...

Any word on new interview invites? It's been a while.

So roughly how many is that in a group per interview day? 10, a dozen or so?

I just interviewed Nov 3, which I believe, from my understanding was the very first group of interviewees for this year. There were 10 of us that day.

If you mind me asking what were your stats and when did you submit? Also are you a new yorker?

I submitted secondary before the invite, and I was complete by late september meaning I had my LOR's in also. Also Im an OOS student. There were a few OOS students there that day.

Thanks for the info. I guess it was a mistake to wait to send the secondary until the invite. Wish I had sent it in right away. Hope that doesn't delay my invite if I ever get one!

Dont worry too much, its still early. I thought I didnt have a chance especially being OOS. Keep your head up, it'll happen for you.

Does anyone mind sharing some experiences from the interview day? Perhaps some questions you were asked...that sort of thing? I have an interview coming up and it would be nice to hear what the interview was like. Thanks all and good luck!

has anyone from the midwest region of the US had an interview invite?

The interview day was very laid back. The med students were very nice as well as the faculty and staff and interviewers. The interview itself was one on one and very laid back. It almost was like just having a normal conversation. I didnt feel like they were trying to trip me up at all. Hope that helps and good luck!

I had a similar experience. The interviewer was very friendly and the interview was very laid back and was primarily aimed at getting to know me. The only standard question I was asked was regarding my opinion on health care reform. Other than that, the focus was on my desire to go to medical school, work/volunteer experiences, etc. One of the least stressful interviews I've had.

NYCOM was awesome. Good luck and enjoy yourself 🙂

Hey everyone,

I interviewed at NYCOM on November 3rd. Honestly, it is NOTHING to worry about. It was a one-on-one interview and like Hungrykid and NYDR said, a very laid back and lax environment. They just want to get to know you and see what you are about. The campus, I thought, was really pretty and it is in a great neighborhood.

Anyway, for those of you guys who interviewed with me on Nov 3rd, any feedback yet? Each day for me is like the longest day EVER waiting for this response!

I just interviewed today (11/9) and asked when decisions are going out. The admissions faculty said that the first batch of decisions, including my week and you guys, should be going out mid December (around December 15th or so). A 4 week wait isn't that bad. Could be a nice holiday present!

Nothing yet. Its driving me nuts too. But from what Ive heard and seen through the forums in prior years, the first batch comes out in mid-december. All I know is that I cant wait! I really liked NYCOM. Good luck and Ill post something the second I hear anything.

Ah, that's so annoying though. NYCOM would probably be my top choice if things work out there (if the interview goes well, of course, and turned into an acceptance, and if I liked the school after actually getting a taste) but deposits elsewhere are due on Dec 14th 🙁. I don't want to have to put down $1000+ before hearing a final decision from NYCOM. I guess its a blessed situation to be in, but that 1k will hurt.

do you guys think its late to submit a secondary? i got mine september 7th but I havent had a chance to complete it. its been a hectic semester.

Nope. Not too late at all. They only started giving out the secondaries that day. Interview invites only went out a few weeks ago and started interviews last week. Send it in as soon as you can and good luck!

I'm in the same boat! I'm really hoping we hear something before 12/14. Reading up on last year's forum, most people were able to call the school and get a decision over the phone by 12/10 or so. Hopefully that will be the case this year!
