If you had a choice of attending either NYCOM or PCOM, which school would you choose and why?

or...

If you were already accepted to PCOM (and you're a PA resident), would you bother spending more money on interviewing at NYCOM?

Thanks for any responses, it will help me out a lot.

Well rayzer, I can't help you because I am in the EXACT same situation as you. Hopefully someone knows something we don't.

BTW, congrats on the PCOM acceptance. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, but maybe we'll both be there next year.

I would go to PCOM if it were more inexpensive.
Hey Nate -
Why do you say this? Do you have some insight into PCOM or NYCOM? I know you're a NJ resident, so I'm a little confused here... 😕
The class size at NYCOM is a little big, which is one reason I'm excited to interview at UMDNJ-SOM, but NY certainly has great rotation sites. PCOM sounds incredible and the campus (from the online tour) is beautiful, and has really modern facilities and even a small garden!

Well I am not completely informed and I have not interviewed at either school yet so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, the most important factors to me are class size, tuition, quality of clinical, and atmosphere. Both PCOM and NYCOM have huge class sizes so there is little difference there. Tuition is about equal but you said you are a PA resident so staying near home is nice and may make it less expensive (this was my main point)? Clinical appear to be good at both schools, they are both in huge cities, however PCOM is in Philly so you may not have to move around for them while NYCOM is QUITE a way from Manhattan and other boroughs. With the traffic we are talking anywhere from 30 minutes to hours. As for environment, well I don't know because I haven't interviewed yet as I said but from all the reading that I have done it would be a tough decision; my instincts at this point say PCOM.

In the end I would chose UMDNJ over them both anyway for all the above reasons but you didn't ask about that =)

*edit* I just received an interview invite for PCOM and I am going to take my own advice and go check it out for myself.

If you do a search with PCOM and NYCOM this has been discussed to death also.

By the way, I would go to the NY interview because the schools are very similar in all those aspects and if you feel a better vibe at NYCOM than it may be better for you. My opinions of schools changed a lot after each interview that I have been on... Just wanted to add that.

im currently an M1 at pcom, and i can tell you that i'm really happy there. the teachers are all really great, and pcom students have a really good reputation in hospitals all over the area. i really dont know anything about nycom except that they're in an area with lots of traffic, and that they have a big class size. but you should be aware that pcom' class size is really big too. at the start of this year we had 279 people. it seems really crowded at first, but after a few months, i dont notice so much. the good thing about a big class is that there are a lot of different types of people, and your bound to meet people you have things in common with. you have the type As that are super competitive and have panic attacks over every exam, you have the people that go out to bars 3-4 times a week, and you have everything in between. anyway, i need to get back to studying for our anatomy final, but if you have any specific questions about pcom feel free to PM me, i'll have more time to answer after thursday. congratulations on getting in.
