Hey all,

Just to be sure on this.. there is no secondary application for NY until they give you an invite.. right?

It seems like some people have scheduled interview dates.. so I guess they started the process. Has anyone received a reject letter from them>?

Thanks

I'm a current NYCOM 4th year. the way they did it when i was applying was that they make you fill out the 2nd application at the interview. my advice is to bring a copy of your application with you becuase you are gunna need some of the info that is in it. also try and talk to some people who have interviewed there and find out what the questions they ask are. I happened to meet someone when i was at a PCOM interview and she told me the questions so when i went to the NYCOM interview the next week i already had my answers written down. this was a big help. but its still not a big deal.. they werent rediculous questions.

hey i got the interview invite and they send the secondary with the invite. They tell you to bring the secondary with you to the interview. The secondary is really short - just list extracurriculars, volunteer, work experience and why NYCOM. Pretty basci stuff.

i got diddly squat from them...well, the letter stating my AACOM application was received and to send them LORs...
Yesterday they confirmed receiving my LORs...Sounds like they keep us "out-of-staters" in a separate pile cuz the lady asked me if I was in-state or not...

anyone heard of august MCATers receiving interview invitations at NYCOM?

hey Persistant

I got my AACOMAS in by mid-august and I am in state. My undergrad was a 3.3, my grad was a 3.7 and my MCAT was a 28. They never sent me a letter telling my whether my application was complete or not and I know that they hadn't recived all of my recs before I got the invite. Hope this helps.

NYCOM will only send a rejection letter to those that are rejected post-interview.

As far as a I know NYCOM will ONLY contact you if they want you to interview. They don't send out presecondary rejections.

secondaries are only given to those that are granted interviews. secondary should be mailed with interview invite.

Usually NYCOM starts interviewing in later november after their open house. they are starting interviews about 2-3 weeks early this year. NYCOM generally does the bulk of their interviewing starting in Jan. Getting an invite for NYCOM in Nov/Dec is still relatively early.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does that mean they will NEVER contact you in case they decide not to interview you? Like your primary was never received? Thanks ;-)

can't tell if clement is joking so...

NYCOM gets your primary application. here are the 2 fates:

1 - you get both a secondary and interview invite in a letter. bring secondary and sceondary fee to interview.

2 - you never hear from NYCOM. They don't want to interview you.

This is nice since you pay a secondary fee ONLY if you get an interview invite.

This goes for all schools. be proactive:
-Call NYCOM if you did not get a letter stating they have your primary and it is showing as sent on AACOMAS for a while
-go to open houses
-get a DO letter if you have not yet. not mandatory but help.
-don't be the person that calls admissions and finds out in March that something is missing from their file

Hey there,
Actually I wasn't joking...I understand that it is to your benefit if they don't make you pay the secondary $$ in case they're not interested, but to NOT HEAR from them at ALL means you are in limbo between a rejection and an interview which can be requested at any point until, say, MARCH....And by that time you might have to let other schools know what your status is with them...Not sure how others have dealt with this?
I just think it makes sense to generate some correspondence letting you know they DON'T want you for an interview...Calling them up for a status check doesn't seem to be working for me. I applied pretty dang early and I'm out in Cali...So I'd love to attend the open house too, but not if my chances are nil and they won't even let me know it.

Well I didn't receive a secondary invite, but yesterday in the mail I got a letter from them saying they received my primary app from aacomas.

yea, i got that too...but it's the aftermath that's a challenge....
just called them actually, and the lady who answered agreed with me on all points basically. she did mention that last year they started sending emails out toward the end of the process, in may, to people they weren't going to be interviewing...

So generally how long (for the people who received interview invites) is it between receiving the primary and inviting you?

I got my primary in Aug i think and I recieved my intereview invite at the end of Sept.

i think there is a difference in time-frame based on whether your in-state or not...that might play into too...

Those of you with interview invites, what were your stats like?

3.48 overall, 3.31 BCPM, 27P MCAT (9,9,9)
I'm a NYS resident, submitted my AACOMAS in mid-July, and received my interview invite on 10/6.

for attending the open house...are there any rules of thumb or such...im not really sure how it would work....do you try to speak to the admissions people and tell them about yourself or are there too many people there and you have to fight for facetime with them? any goood ideas for things to be prepared to talk about and such when u go there? 😕

anyone can go to the open house. some things from last year:

0)coffee, muffins, pens, course catalog, bandaids (came in handy this summer), fridge magnet, etc
1)saw many parents present. maybe some children. - appeared to be 200-250 people present
2)by show of hands a handful of people were at the previous years Open House. by show of hands - some of the premeds were only in their sophomore year.
3)demonstration of OMM
4)small groups where you talk with 2 students
5)small groups with OMM fellows - very nice
6)tour of school
7)talk on financial aid
8)meet some of the administration
9)after all of this they had lunch served and then you can talk with the admin available and admissions.

read the FAQ for a list of criteria. If anything is very important to you and it is not covered sufficiently when lunch starts then talk to the admissions director. Obviously talking to them is not mandatory. You don't even have to ask a question. Just say hi!! Ms Zaika is very nice and others say that Ms Croot is as well.

Lines to talk to the 2 deans of admissions was never longer than about 5-8 people with a 10-15 minute wait to talk. It did not seem like that many people took the opportunity to talk to the directors of admissions in the first 30 minutes.

The directors of admissions were able to discuss the school and other topics. If you want to discuss your grades, interviews or any personal topics along that manner please tread lightly. I doubt they want to stand there all day and hear "What are my chances?". Asking about averages from last year's interview group is one thing but starting off with " i have an XX MCAT and X.X GPA" is probably not the best use of your time.

Put a face on your application

If you have no how idea to approach this then just tell them:
your name
what you are currently doing now
what you have done to improve your chances at NYCOM
etc.

This is not an interview so the above should only take a minute! after that:
ask your question/share your concerns

some of you will be faced with multiple acceptances so try to take away something from the Open House that will help you accept/decline your acceptance to NYCOM.

things change every year so don't get mad at me if they don't have muffins this year. 😀

hunter they better have the muffins (blueberry) thats why im going.......j/k

now i just have a month to come up with someone to say other than ummmmmmm.....
