NYMC Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was definitely iffy about the school after my interview day--I didn't know how I felt. I went to the Second Look Day, and I really really enjoyed it. I think the students love being there and really have a great time together. In my opinion, it seems like a great place to get your s**t done in a calm setting, with the option of heading out to NYC or other bordering areas when you're in the mood to forget about studying for a while.

Very good impression🙂

Question for students again:

- Mac or PC? I need a new computer...
- Where can we find out more about the microscopes? Do we have to buy them or do the third years pawn them off to new students - idea on cost?
- You guys feel like the budget is manageable/too much/too small? I'm going to live on campus the first couple years and feel like I can handle my finances reasonably well...but a heads-up would help.

Thanks.

Any current students mind telling me how they manage not to have a heart attack when looking at the total for student loans? I'm working on it...

I still haven't gotten over it. Got my stuff together again this year and it made me kick high gear into frugal mode (had gotten out of it a bit).

Also.. mac or pc.. which ever you prefer. I personally love my mac and haven't had an issue using school programs and such.

ummm is there a reason why everytime I call NYMC the people I talk to are a bit rude? I've only called a couple times to ask a simple questions. It kind of gives a bad impression consider other schools seem to go out of their way to be nice.

Was it the financial aid department? With exception of the Dean of fin aid (Dean Sozza), they are all rude (even in person). I get that they have to deal with the same crap day in and day out.. but they should only be real busy this time of the year.
I have never had a problem with anyone else in any other department, though.

I share this sentiment. Dean Sozza has been very helpful each time I have spoken with him. However, when I have called the financial aid office and have spoken with anyone other than him, I have been given wrong information by rude people. Generally, this has been no different from the financial aid office at any of the other five schools I've attended so far.

If the financial aid or admissions people are rude, just imagine how many ridiculous and stupid calls they have gotten every day for the last 8 months.

Does anyone know if the merger will open up the possibility of an MD MBA degree?

Don't know exactly yet - but it has been mentioned by the president that there will be greater dual degree offerings in general. Touro does has business and law schools.

So is the merger definite? Or are we still in limbo?

1. Mac or PC doesn't matter. The network is fine and there's no proprietary programs that need one or the other. They've even let iPhones work on the wireless, which a lot of people seem to appreciate. There seems to be an even split between Macs and those cheap tiny netbooks that are just coming out.

2. The microscopes...hopefully they notify you earlier about that, we certainly asked them to when I was a first year. You have the option of renting a microscope for two years (needed through April of 2nd year) from the school for $300, or you can buy one off a rising third year or tardy fourth year.** The school microscopes are better quality but you'll never use them to the point that you'd care. If you're buying but not from a former student, wait for the specs because they are a bit fussy.

3. I have friends who blew the budget and friends who returned money after living on campus. If you're good at sticking to a budget, you'll do fine. If you run over, Tony (Dean Sozzo) will help you figure something out. He is fantastic.

**For instance, I still have mine, and know a few others that do. PM me if you're interested. 🙄

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has heard back from financial aid or knows any fin aid answers. I was wondering to what % of the class they usually give grants/scholarships and what the avg. would be.

I haven't heard anything back yet but I think that school grants are few and far between unfortunately 🙁 It'll depend on your parents income if you get them or not...

Just got accepted earlier this week!!!!!! Ohhhh tooooooo excited :~) Go class of 2013!!

Another budget question:

Does the budget for second years factor in the cost of the Step 1 exam, and for travel expenses and NRMP costs for 4th years? 😕 If not, I have no idea how it would get paid for...

Good question. I think the financial aid budget rises each year from what I've heard.

All I know is that I'm gonna be 300k in debt; and they wonder why no one wants to go into primary care!

Yep, we're screwed. The earlier we accept it the better off we'll be.

Hi,

I applying in the following year. Has anyone here gotten acceptance or wl with a low 3 and 30 MCAT?

I was accepted early last week and I can't wait!!
My stats are probably considered "low" 3.5/28 but I've been out of school for a little bit and have some cool work experience as well as good ECs and volunteering. Plus according to my interviewer, I did an exceptional job expressing why I wanted to be a dr and how I know it is right for me.
I'll assume I just got lucky, but I'm thrilled. Never give up hope with less than stellar stats!

I got in with those stats. However, I'm just finishing up NYMC's accelerated master's program here which I believe played a large role in my acceptance. So, if you're set on going to NYMC specifically, then this program would increase your chances for getting in here (not so much other schools though).

NYMC has an exact budget break-down for all expenses by year, including Step 1, traveling, etc. Go to NYMC.edu, School of medicine, student financial planning, class year, budgets, etc. Just follow the directions. Click on the appropriate class year to see the budget for the that year (ex. Class of 2010 would tell you how much year 4 would cost).

Anybody start looking for apartments yet? Im not sure I want to live in the dorms...Im 24, and have been out of college for a couple of years, so I have furniture and stuff, and also dont think I want to go back to living in a dorm (esp the nymc ones dont look too great, remind me of my college days).

Anyone know of good locations/buildings for a 1BR?

I just found an apartment in White Plains which seems like a nice place to live. It's about a 10 min drive from the school and has plenty of stores, restaurants, bars, shopping, and trains to Grand Central within walking distance.

I also spoke with a couple of NYMC students that said Tarrytown is a nice place to live but may not have the city feel and commerce that White Plains offers.

Craigslist - New York - Westchester - has plenty of listings and can give you a good idea of what places cost in the area.

Thanks ATrim7; did you get a 1 BR? Do you mind me asking how much ur rent is?

Ashah, my fiance and I found a great apt in Tarrytown (about 10min away) from the current listserv. Craigslist is great and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Our apt shopping is over, but it took a while so I have some good info.

Are you looking for a place to live off-campus, but don't want to be too far from campus? 😀

I am a new fourth year medical student currently renting out a house on Bradhurst Avenue that is within walking distance to campus. The house is a two story house with four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a usable basement. I am looking for two roommates to rent out the two upstairs bedrooms. Both bedrooms are rather large. One is about half the size of the house, and the other has a separate office space off of it with ample closet space.

The rent is $900 and the only utilities for which you have to pay are electricity and cable/internet if you want them.

Roommates must be able to live with a six year old boy and a small dog, as I am married. I will be renting out the two bedrooms on the first floor.

We would share a living room, dining room and kitchen. There is a washer and dryer in the basement. There is a two car garage with ample parking.

Pets are welcome.
There is a dishwasher in the kitchen...though I haven't used it myself.

If interested, please contact me via these forums, email, or phone. I'm looking to rent out from August into next June. 👍

Phone: 401-473-9376

P.S. The house is the only residential unit on the street, so it is very quiet, especially at night.

Thanks Maldini,

Im kinda allergic to dogs 🙁 THanks anyways though!

Hey the dog stays downstairs. And you should be on Singulair. That stuff works wonders for me. My fiance has cats to which I am highly allergic to the point that I would have allergic asthma attacks, and now I can pet and play with the cats all I want without the use of inhaled corticosteroids.

It would be a good deal for you if you wanted to stay very close to campus but didn't want to live on campus. Plus it's right next door to the 19 Bradhurst Medical Building where most of the WCMC docs have their outpatient offices. You actually spend more time their 2nd and 3rd year, but mostly 3rd year.

Plus it's a good deal in general considering the rent in that area, and what you are getting for you money.

Is it true to the rumor that NYMC rejects high stat applicants? I have a 38 MCAT and was wondering if it'll be a waste of money to apply to NYMC. Their secondary apparently doesn't ask you anything except for 100 bucks.

I don't know about that. Maybe statistically high powered applicants generally go to a more "prestigious" school, even though NYMC matches in some of the best residencies and trains some of the most outstanding doctors.

I can't really speak for the applicants or the admission office.

I don't think that is true. I know at least 2 people in the class of 2012 having higher MCAT scores than you. Plus, a lot of us are in the 35+ range.

I will be up in white plains signing my lease this coming weekend and was hoping to open up a bank account up there while I am in town. Can any current student shed some light on what bank (if any) there is on campus and what banks operate atms on campus. I'd like to open up an account with a major bank in the NYC area, but want to be sure that I have access to an atm on campus as well.

Your info would be appreciated.

There's a Bank of America ATM in the BSB. There are Chase ATM's near campus, but you'd probably have to drive to those.

Anyone know when we will get a sense for whether or not we are going to be receiving the loan money we need?

Thnxx🙂

I called the office of financial planning (or whatever they call it) last week and was told that they will begin processing the class of 2013 loans sometime around June 15th and that we should begin to hear about Step 2 of the process in early July. That seems a little late to me...but that is all I have to go on.

Got off the waitlist last week and will definitely be attending. So excited!! It seems like most people are living off campus... I will probably live on-campus to save time and money. Anyone else doing the same?

i think that the population of this forum may be skewed, im not sure "most" are living off campus...just the people that are may be the ones stating it. i'll be on campus, hopefully not alone...haha

Actually, I believe most of the 1st year class is on campus.

yes ill be on campus as well...sent in my housing app like 3 weeks ago and requested a 2br unfurnished...

I really don't know what's going on down at NYMC. Admissions staff seem to hate their jobs and they take it out on innocent callers. The financial aid lady does not know how to communicate and is extremely rude. There is one lady that I spoke to when I called admissions that pretty much treated me worse than an animal…. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say especially as I was so nice.
The only sane person in admissions that actually treats you with dignity is the Dean of fincial aid Dean Sozza.

Are most of you guys living on campus? When I took the tour, the dorms looked pretty nasty and I dont really think I want to relive those college days. What do you guys think?

and Medicule...pretty much EVERY school is full of really rude staff...I havent really come across many polite people in this whole process (in their defense they deal with like 10,000 annoying premeds each year).

I'm trying to decide between a 2 bedroom unfurnished vs. a 3 bedroom furnished. Anyone try renting from this Churchill Rental place that they recommended?

I'll be living off campus. However, I do think I will miss some of the late night study sessions/procrastinating/drinking that will go on in the on-campus community.

As far as the fin aid office is concerned - when I call I immediatley ask to speak with Dean Sozzo. In my experience, any time spent speaking with anyone else in that office has been a waste of time.

Yeah ATrim7 you are right about Sozzo.

Also did you get a 1 BR?

I was planning on getting a one bedroom but ended up getting a great deal on a two bedroom. It was only financially possible to do so because I'll be sharing the rent with my girlfriend. If I was moving up by myself I would have lived on campus for a year to save some cash and meet some people.
