nymc response?

Hmmm .. Columbia22 and Hannahbanana both received that e-mail on Sat and got accepted today. (Congratulations you both 🙂 ) I got it too, but didn't get anything as yet ... who feels like the odd one out lol.

As if dealing with a hostile Evanston, Bienen, and an outrageous curve in Bio wasn't enough bad luck ...

The one thing that Columbia22, Hanahbanana, and myself have in common is that we sent letters of intent. This is where we wanted to be, so we told them that. I know that some of you are on multiple waitlists, so you are kinda stuck. But keep mind what your chances of getting in off the waitlists at other schools. Your chances of getting in off the waitlist at NYMC are good.
I too was on waitlists at other schools, but I chose NYMC because I really liked it better than the other two schools and I let them know it!! Good luck to everyone. Just time and patience.
I know it is easier said than done, I was going nuts the last two weeks.

If you've already sent LOIs and additional rec letters, is there anything else we can do?

I guess send them a letter once a week. (no more than that) Wait and keep the faith. The waitlist moves all the way up until July30, so there is lots of time and people with acceptances are waiting on other waitlist...so try to relax. Try, anyway.

For those on multiple waitlists who haven't decided on their first choice yet (or who don't want to commit), consider sending a Letter of Interest in lieu of a Letter or Intent. That way, you can write to multiple schools.

Good luck

has anyone found out how full the class might be at this point in time? i'm getting really nervous about the waitlist...

I'm right there with you medstylee. I called today and couldn't get any info out of the admissions person past "there will be movement up until the last week of July" I asked on size of wailist and how much of the waitlist had "moved" already, but was just told that the waitlist is already moving. I feel your pain though...

Spin Doctor - trying to relax, but it's been very unsuccessful! (appreciate the advice though!)

I emailed the school on Sat asking them how many people were on the waitlist and they told me that info is not available to us 🙁 But here is what I think helped me get off the list. I called Carolyn J. Chiarieri and left her a message on Monday, and got the e-mail for the waitlist on Tuesday. So start calling people at the school and let them know how much you want in. Also, who are you guys addressing your letters to? My updated letter of rec was addressed to the Dean, but I also had a copy sent to the admissions office. I did that because I felt like nothing was happening with the LOI that I was sending, and I wanted someone to actually read it. I hope this info helps you guys out! 🙂

Thanks hanahbanana...

i tried calling ms. chiarieri earlier today and her phone message said that she would be on vacation this week and she would return this coming monday. so, i'm guessing that means they won't be sending out any decisions this week. ughhh... unless, someone's heard something this week already?

it's been a while +pity+

has anyone heard anything lately or has anyone withdrawn his/her acceptance to nymc lately?

let a poor, anxious soul know! 👍

Last Tuesday, I got a "Decision Letter Mailed"...but haven't received anything yet...does anyone know if this is good or bad?

were you on the waitlist? i know their dates are all screwed up on the status check page. my original decision was mailed to my house on 1/5/04 and the status page said "decision letter mailed" 2/5/04. hopefully what you got will prove to be more accurate! good luck.

This thread has been quiet, but did anyone else receive an e-mail saying they were being withdrawn from the waitlist due to lack of response to stay on it. Of course, I had a responded, and when I called them they said I was still on it. So, I don't know what to make of it. Maybe it was error alot of people got?

I got this email as well (despite having just spoken with the admissions office and telling them I would like to remain on the list). I am not sure why they are sending this email, but maybe they are trying to decrease the size of their list? I dont know!

I got an e-mail about being removed from the waitlist way back around the time I was actually waitlisted. Apparently, they just didn't get that little reply postcard that I sent back to them. In any case, I feel like due to the high volume of application stuff they must be getting, they occasionally get a little disorganized and lose stuff. I always check to see if my updates have made it into my application. Sometimes it takes a little while, but if you ask, they are good about letting you know what they have and what they don't have.

best of luck (maybe someone on this site will hear something from them this week... finally)

Seems like a systemic error, who knows .... here's hoping ....

Anyone know if the waitlist is still moving?

Call me ignorant, but what does it mean when one says "bump 😎"?

Edit: I figured it out. 😳

anyone call lately? i'm guessing things are pretty much dead. blah.

So although NYMC is the only school I am waitlisted for, like many of you it is my top choice. I have sent a number of letters to the school in hopes that I could possibly sway their decision in my favor and am hoping to send a letter to the dean, short but sweet, saying how much I want to get into the school. I was a late applicant and late interviewee, so I expected as much to this point. Best I can say for others is keep faith, and have your plans in order incase you hear news three days prior (which supposedly is the latest date which they will respond to you). For all those that wish to send something as well to the dean, her name is carolyn chiarieri. Good luck everyone.

is that three days prior to orientation or when classes start?

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i called nymc today. they're actually overbooked, so they don't anticipate any more admissions from the waitlist. orientation for the class starts 7/31...

Ms. Chiarieri is not the Dean, but rather the Director. Fern Juster is the Dean of the Admissions. Furthermore, I will echo docquaker's sentiment. If you haven't gotten in yet, you probably won't get in at this point. The class is overbooked. Good luck to everyone.

So what do they do if the class if overbooked. Do they offer you a meal voucher and full tuition for next year if you give up your seat.

Orientation begins Monday Aug. 2, 7/31 is the first day you can move in. Classes begin 8/9, so maybe there's hope until then...

that's the most closure i've received so far. at least it's something!

and, by the way, i'd try calling ms. chiarieri rather than e-mailing or mailing her. she'll take the time to speak with you on the phone. she's very nice and she'll tell you as much as she can. i e-mailed her once though and it somehow got forwarded to the admissions office and they said to direct all inquiries to them rather than her.

best of luck.

hey, so listen to this.

a family member of mine who is an alumnus of nymc volunteered to call and put in a good word for me. the admissions person told him that the last admissions committee meeting for the application year was in may and that nothing else could be done at that point. it all depended upon my "place on the waiting list."

what the hell!??? what's with all the BS about no one being ranked and everyone being looked at for each new spot? obviously, if the admissions committee meets one final time in may, that can't be the real case. i really hope this person was just really clueless. otherwise, nymc has some nerve allowing someone like me to break my back sending in tons of stuff: LORs, LOIs, transcripts, research papers, etc when they can just look at my position on the list and tell me that i don't have a chance. i'm really pissed. 🙁

yeah, i'm not too sure about the whole "unranked" thing...just doesn't seem feasible.

waitlists are definately ranked, despite what they tell you. that being said, i think there is a difference between a "ranked" and "unranked" waitlist...

buffalo ranks their waitlists and tells applicants that they can send updated transcripts, etc, but that wont help their position at all. they just go systematically down the list when something opens up. i think that if you sent those items to nymc, it would help move your position. as far as totally unranking their waitlist, there's no way nymc is going to go through 300 waitlistees just to find one person. they probably just go to the top of their waitlist and choose from there.

well, my NYMC coffin has just been nailed shut. Class is starting next week and it will be starting without me in it, courtesy of the admissions office. I guess that's closure.

did you get a letter or something? i guess i should be expecting mine soon=)

I just withdrew my spot from nymc. best of luck to whomever gets it!!

I had a pleasant chat with Carolyn Chiarieri in her office today; I only live 20 min away so I decided to talk in person rather than call.

First off, I mentioned medstylee's comment about the admissions committee's last meeting being in May and that an applicant's acceptance is dependent on his/her position on the waitlist. She said this was completely false, and that they do review everyone's application, even though that may seem daunting, they become very familiar with everyone's application as they review them multiple times when a new spot becomes available.

In addition, they still don't want us to know how many total people were waitlisted or how many are left on the waitlist as of today. I don't know what they are trying to hide by doing this. Maybe all interviewees who don't get accepted outright get waitlisted as a kind of potential soft rejection? Does anybody know of anybody who was rejected outright after an interview with them? I can't help but speculate as to why they do that.

As other people have mentioned, the NYMC class of 2008 is full. So unless several people change their minds and withdraw, which is highly unlikely at this point in time, there is going to be no more waitlist movement.

Carolyn was kind enough to allow me to set up a meeting with her to review my file, and let me know what my strengths and weaknesses are. So I can correct my application for when I reapply.

I'm wishing all those who are on the waitlist at NYMC or anywhere else good luck; I feel your pain.

that's cool that she volunteered to make an appt to go over your app. she's always been helpful whenever i've been able to actually get a hold of her.

and, it's good to know what the real deal is. i wasn't trying to start some bogus story or whatever. i just paraphrased what my family member was told by someone in admissions. perhaps that person was just trying to get rid of him or maybe he/she just really had no clue. in any case, thanks for posting about your conversation. 👍

I think the reason they won't tell you about the waitlist stats is that technically, the waitlist is still active because class hasn't officially started. Their policy is, I was told once, that they can't discuss your application while the waitlist is still under consideration. So... call in after next week, after orientation has begun, so that you may get less obscure answers to all your questions.

p.s. I got my closure by talking to Carolyn over the phone. I don't think they send out official rejections.
