NYU Acceptances?

at one of my interviews, there was a girl who went to nyu undergrad and had a friend in the med admissions office. i asked why nyu only interviews till dec 21st and how is that going. she said that her friend told her this was the first year they're doing amcas applications, got totally overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they had to process, and literally "threw out" like 2000 applications, barely looking at them! 😱

anyways. she said the guy admitted they don't know what they're doing and wouldn't be surprised if they find out later on that they don't have enough ppl to fill their class and start interviewing ppl again.

i don't know how authentic this account is, but thought at the time how disorganized and unprofessional of the nyu admissions office this was. my app is probably one of the ones that got thrown out!

I wrote them an email stating how dissatisfied I was with their process. They are the only school that doesn't allow any form of status checks. They stopped sending out interview invites like Dec. 10th and I asked why they dont let the applicants that weren't interviewed at least know they are no longer under consideration. I am really wondering what the $100 fee was for, because its not like the one email that they send out costs them much.

Anyways, NYU was my top choice, and I am really sad to hear that this years applicants got skrewed.

As i mentioned before, this is not true. Also, the 100 check is not unique to NYU. Every other school has secondary fees, as it pays for the manpower it takes to actually review thousands of pplications and interview hundreds of applicants. As for the not being under consideration part, that is unfortunate, but it happens at a lot of places.

Also, congrats to everyone accepted. If you have any questions, I will be happ to answer them as best I can.

Bigdreamer, did they ever respond to your email? I want to write them one as well... but not until after I hear from them! It's unfortunate when good schools end up giving a bad impression because of the attitude of their admissions office -- their process IS terrible. My application was complete in late July, and 2 weeks after I submitted my secondary I got an email saying my application was incomplete due to missing recommendation letters. I knew for a fact they had been received, so I called and was told to be patient, it would just take a while for their system to catch up. Another 3 weeks later I got another incomplete application email. I called again and was told the same thing. I asked if they could please just check my file and see that it was complete, and they said they were too busy. Since I was getting worried by this time (does it take 5 weeks to notice a file is complete?), I started calling once a week to check if I was complete yet -- every time I got the same answer. TEN weeks after I submitted my secondary, I finally convinced someone to physically check my file. Guess what... I had 2 files, both incomplete, one with my application in it and one with my recommendation letters in it. Yet no one could bother to check this 8 weeks earlier.

Well they responded to my initial email because I wrote, "Please show me some consideration by at least responding to this email. Thank you." I dont think my email was too harsh, but it did express my "extreme disappointment" with their process, i.e. their lack of communication to the applicants whose futures are being decided.

but the response was completely non-apologetic and did not answer anything

Applicants are sent an email notifying them that their applications have been received and are either incomplete or complete. If selected for an interview, invitations are sent beginning in August and continue thru December. Final decision letters are sent in January and February.

I thought the tone of her email was rude and fits in quite well with the rest of the way NYU treats its applicants

I wrote back saying:
I really appreciate your quick response. I understand the process timeline, but I am still a little confused. Is NYU still inviting applicants to interview? I was told over the phone that they were not, but I have not recieved any notification of a final action.

I hope you understand my persistance, my application to NYU is very important to me and I just want to be clear on my status.

And I haven't recieved anything back, nor do I expect to.

Still, I think you should write them an email. They need to know that their process is not kind to their applicants, and makes the extremely difficult and emotional process worse.

This is certainly not unique to NYU. A lot of schools send out all of the final decisions at the same time rather than as the decisions are made. It's a part of the process and continuously sending them emails is probably not going to do much good.

I received an acceptance today. I am in RI and the letter was postmarked Jan 20th.

Anybody not from Northeast in yet?

almost the same thing happened to me . . twice they told me they didn't have my letters (which i knew they did because my pre-med office is awesome and had sent it more than once really early on in the game). magically one day (after two months of going back and forth) they declared my file complete . . . and then i never heard from them. nyu was my top "most likely to go there" school (as opposed to my top choice which is a long shot). oh well

You are complaining about rudeness, when your original email to them included the phrase "Please show me some consideration by responding to this email"? Please.

The fact is, the application process sucks. Many schools do not send out rejection letters until after the acceptances go out, even if you never were invited for an interview. Its not limited to NYU. Try to understand that each scool is handling an incredible volume of applications, with what is usually a limited staff. Yeah, it would be nice if thinks were different. But would you rather pay 3 times the application cost so they could cater to ever anal retentive applicant that wants to bug them 3 times a week? Yes, many people are concerned about their app for good reason, and need to get vital information. But for each one of those people, there are 10 who simply are impatient overachievers, that can't wait like everyone else, and create more work for the staff.

Just because your application isn't complete doesn't mean that someone from the adcom hasn't looked at it. One possible scenario is that an adcom member reviewed your AMCAS, and determined that even if your LOR's were amazing you still would not receive an interview.

NYU had to review like 8000 applications in a 4.5 month period of time. Realistically, they have to spend more time on some than others. The ones they don't like at first glance get the boot.

I got my letter today. I live in MI and I interviewed Oct 15th-ish. Good luck everyone! It defenitely is a big relief to get the good news🙂

I'm not sure if you were responding to bigdreamer's post or mine, but they do not review your file re: interview decisions until your application is complete, i.e. secondary and LORs received. My application was incomplete for 10 weeks because they misfiled my LORs and wouldn't check when I called. I was invited for an interview about 2 weeks after it was finally (officially) complete.

Would those that got accpeted mind posting their stats? MCAT+GPA?

sorry to be annoying~

Gotcha. I know that for some schools, even though this is their policy, they don't always abide by it in practice. I know of people who had been rejected (not at NYU) before receiving a complete email.

for those of us who have not heard yet- i called NYU, just because i want to end this miserable waiting period already, and the woman told me that they will in fact be sending out acceptance letters all week. She said that they may even send some out next week as well. just so that we don't lose hope just yet...

has anyone who interviewed in late nov/ early dec. received their letters yet? Also, I thought they sent out every acceptance letter last week. Are they still mailing the acceptance letters throughout the next few weeks? I'm so confused. 😕 When do they send out the rejection/waitlist letters?

I interviewed Dec 7th and still have not heard. But, she told me on the phone that it does not have anything to do with WHEN you interviewed, it's just random. Good luck!

I was the first interview (September 12, 9am 🙂 ). It seems like I've been waiting forever since then, and these last few days/weeks are killing me. I'm glad some other people out there understand my pain. Hopefully they'll show us Midwesterners some love very soon!

Thanks for calling...I think that this info should quell the panic temporarily (at least it does for me). That allisonbk is very smart and helpful - I think she(?) should be a doctor...

Thanks for calling too....I interviewed Dec. 8th looks like i just missed ya.

Still no love anywhere in California apparently... 🙁

though they say they aren't in order, it looks so far that only people who interviewed in sept/oct have heard. hope us nov/dec interviewees hear soon!!!

AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I got my acceptance letter today! (Well, my Mom did back at home).
I'M IN CALIFORNIA!!! I interviewed... October 24.

I was an early interviewee and no news...but not expecting it...it was my first interview, and a few things didn't go so well...good luck, i think late interviewers still have a shot...

No love today 🙁

Nothing today. Gosh, some of you can probably sympathize, the waiting day by day is killing me. =(

I got the acceptance letter today and i'm in cali. Interviewed in late Sept.

So they included a reply envelope...but I didn't get any forms to sign or anything to send back. Sooo what exactly is the envelope for? Did you guys get a form to send back and they just forgot to include it in mine? Also, for their revisit weekend, does anyone know if we pay for it ourselves or the school pays for our flights and stuff like some other schools?

Congrats! Its for your check and your signed letter of matriculation... but mainly for your check.

As for the revisit weekend, does anyone know where we are going to be housed cause its 2 days.

My Mom is in Orange County (yes, the OC), California.

I was confused about the 2nd look day too. I'd like to book tickets as soon as I could, obviously, but are they housing us? Is it for the full 2 days? Do we have to pay for the event? So very confused.... 😕

whao, i'm excited for you
looks like all those that are hearing from NYU interviewed early. I guess those of us that interviewed in december are done for. Good luck as we wait.
Guys when were the letters dated ?

Nah relax. 🙂 You basically got 5 things and here they are:
1. Return Envelope
2. Acceptance Letter from the Dean
3. Congradulations from Revisit Weekend Committee
4. Save Date Poster for Revisit Weekend
5. A Small Laminated Piece of Paper Labeled From 1-4

What you are required to send in (according to the laminated paper) is a check written out to NYU for $100 as your deposit to secure your spot and a letter stating you are matriculating (along with your signature).

Read the white card included with it, that is if you got one. It has all the instructions on it. You have to WRITE and SIGN a letter stating your decision and put it in the pink envelope (it was pink right?)

Straight from that laminated card: "B) A MATRICULATION DEPOSIT OF $100 WHICH WILL BE APPLIED TO YOUR TUITION AND FEES FOR THE FIRST YEAR. THE DEPSIT IS NOT REFUNDABLE AFTER MAY 15"

You're safe 👍 ... the only problem I've run across is that they didn't tell you who to make the check out to.

Same problem here. I just made the check out to NYU School of Medicine

wow......congrats everyone 😀

still waiting here.......AND losing sleep over it 🙁 😳

waiting here too. Interviewed early Nov.

ok,
You guys are not going to believe this. I just called NYU and this was the conversation i had,
me: Hi, i interviewed at NYU and was wondering if all the responses will be sent out by the end of this week.
lady: No, responses started going out last and will continue to be sent out till the end of february.
me: You mean the rejects will be sent out at the end of february?
lady: NO, i mean that all responses, accepts, rejects and waitlists, will be sent out till the end of february

And i like, what in the poopy crap is that? I thought acceptances will all be out by this week.
Can someone pls call to confirm or refute this. Maybe the lady was the boss' daughter and does not really know about admissions. Otherwise, NYU is making me crazy.

Now I'm not losing hope! I interviewed Nov. 1st, and thought that it was pretty much over for me. Hang in there!

As to when reponses are supposed to go out, on the sheet of paper given to us during interviews, it says that all acceptances will be mailed out by Jan 31 and waitlists and rejections will go out mid-Feb. But I'm not sure whether they have changed this.
