I think there's a gym by the waterside apartments as well. I don't know if they let non-residents join or not though.

Damn, so its far away from the dorms? Both of those locations are actually two gyms I'm looking to attend and was wondering if it would be too far to walk.

i heard its a 15 min walk from our school to the palisar gym.

this is how the avenues go

1st-2nd-3rd-Lexington-Park-Madision-5th-6th-

NYU is all the way east on 1st, so basically from 6th or 7th ave you are walking across the island of manhattan.

Its actually a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym I was thinking of joining. One of the gyms is actually a Gracie gym, so I'm kinda psyched about attending. I talked to one of the head trainers at the second gym and I thought he said I'll have to take the subway? But as far as fitness/weightlifting gyms, I heard the Palladium is the bomb sauce.

Does anyone know when housing will send us an update if we got a room or not?

They told me in mid July they start assigning rooms, but couldnt give me a definate date in when we would know.

Yikes, that's kinda late...

You should check out The Fighthouse. It's on 27th between 6th and 7th. I box there, nice decently sized (for NY) facility. Lots of instructors/trainers for all kinds of ****.

What's up 2010 classmates...and welcome to our school. Like anything, NYU isn't perfect, but we have a DAMN good time (classes, extra-cirricular...), you guys are going to love it!

I recently got a new computer (gift) and I am selling my awesome IBM T43: This computer is really BEST for classes, since you can RECORD lectures with the high quality built-in mic (much better than an ipod recorder). Wireless also works far better with this computer than the dell's in our school.

All said and done, new it is $1500, but I will sell it for $1150. It already has vital book, and dental anatomy software preloaded, along with Adobe Acrobat FULL VERSION, which is great for taking notes in class ($400 program).

If you are interested email me at [email protected] and I will give you the specs.

Feel free to email me with class and school questions as well!

Shoot I guess I should get on it then...

Oh snap, should I have done so by now? Damn, I thought we were supposed to be doing this during orientation. How do we know what classes to register for?

Have you guys sent in all your immunization and titer lab reports? It says it should have been in by june 1st, but it also says just make sure that u send it in one month b4 orientation which is july 21st?

It's really easy and there's no need to worry about what to register for because we register into a block of courses for D1's (no choices involved).

You know, it really was pretty easy. I thought it was going to be time consuming like when I first registered for my undergrad freshman year courses. Each course had to be registered manually via phone. But this was much more simple. So I think I've completed all the pre-oreintation requirements. Immunization, courses, transcripts, housing, and technology requirements, except PDA. Thats it right? This is insane. In 2 months, we will all be starting our careers. Damn, I feel like a grown up.

I've got everything out of the way too, except for the laptop and PDA. I'm thinking of buying a Sony Vaio, HP 8000 series, or an IBM Z-series... What do you guys think of these choices? I've found some pretty sick deals on these machines here in Toronto.

anyone know what classes we are going to be taking first semester? also anyone know what time classes will start and end approximately? 8am start?

ok. so lets talk about PDAs:

do we HAVE to buy Palm brand devices only? and do they have to run on Palm Operating System 5.4 and later? if those are the only kind of OS we need to use, then does that mean we are restricted to the Palm brand only?

also, what are we doing with the PDAs? if they are for individual use, i can see how brand doesn't matter. however, if we are running software off these PDAs, I would think it would only work on a Palm OS.

what does everyone think?

I am kind of confused. Some current NYU students have told us that we'll have to buy our own PDA but in the letter we received talking about research and all, it says you'll get your PDA during orientation.

hey dr. engineer..just thought I'd drop a line to say hi to my friends on here..

Those of you still hoping to get into NYU, I just wanted to let you know that I withdrew my acceptance recently, so there's a spot opening up for one of you. G'luck!

Hey Mystree! Nice to hear from you. How's cali? I was there last weekend, again!

Sowthpaw4, she is going to USC. Ask her why?

Curiosity begs, huh? 🙂 To answer you it is because I got into a school in my own state, albeit private. So I'll be paying a lot, but this way I save moving/travelling expenses. I can't remember if you're going to NYU?

What, you were in cali, and you didn't even bother to tell me?! How RUDE!!! What were you doing here, surfing? 😛 And I've told you why I'm going to USC, it is so I could avoid you!  I'm only kidding...you're just hurting cuz I won't be at NYU.

Ok guys, once and for all, what's the deal with the PDA requirement!!!!!! I was told that you have to have one by the end of orientation. Will the school GIVE us one during orientation, or do we have to buy it??? Man, I hate all this ambiguity!

Thanks and good luck to you as well. So are you all set to take NYC by storm? I'm relieved that I don't have to hunt for an apartment there, while living here. How are you managing?

Im looking to live near the school, possibly Waterside Plaza (no dorms). Looking for 1 male roommate. PM or email me([email protected]) information about yourself if you are interested.

I'm most likely going to be living there as well. Where's everyone else staying........other than the dorms??????

Is it just me or do we not need to take Biochem in the curriculum at NYU? It isn't on the website's curriculum at all. I'm just curious bc I'm a biochem major.

Thats a nice deal generallee.
I admit E1705 is big (huge infact). But it has so much power for my technological needs. Moreover it has the top of the line video card (Nvidia 7800 256 MB thats about $300 extra). Just a couple weeks ago... i just wrote a cracking software for my computer security class that makes full use of the core duo processor. It runs lightening fast and i ran it for about 24 hours cracking more passowrds than anybody else in my class. Talk about power! It beats XPS hands down.
hmmm... and i'm using VMware and run Ubuntu 5.10 on it. That's just a test but it's rad!
I have atleast 5 laptop bags. I bet it'll fit in atleast one of them.
Plus it runs quite like death.

I think 1505 is a nice laptop too, especially for that price. I would definitely recommend that especially at that price. It's a steal! My roommate just got E1505.

so i'm deciding between an ibm t60 or the dell 1505 or 1705. i think ill get the 1505, good deals right now. how mobile can the 1705 be. is it too heavy to be carrying around. and as far as this truelife option, and tv tuner option, u think its a good idea. let me know, got 3 days to decide

E1705 is indeed pretty big. It has a 17" screen and that justifies it. But it's the most powerful notebook that dell has as of right now (after customization and all). E1505 is the little brother of E1705 with a probably 15" screen size. It's pretty mobile (E1505) but not the most mobile of all the notebooks. E1705 is not very mobile but it can be used as one for sure. It's one of those notebooks which are called destop replacements. But i've used this notebook in my car, in my class, in a plane, etc and it is still in a very good shape (excellent shape i might add).
With E1705 you get the option of NVIDIA 7800 video card, the latest in NVIDIA line when i last checked about a month ago. The video card itself is about 300 bucks i believe. If you will be playing games (which i know i will be) you definitely need E1705 with this video card. If you are not into games, then you are not cool enough to be coming to NYU... hahaha... i meant to say that E1505 will work just fine.
You can get the TV tuner if you plan on watching TV on your computer screen. It is capable of catching local TV signals annd show em on your computer. I wouldn't bother to spend on a tv tuner coz there are a few softwares that you can use to watch tv channels world wide through peer 2 peer technology. I believe TVUplayer is one of them.
Truelife, i think is a better version of LCD screen. If you get the regular LCD screen then there will be some angles that you'll have trouble with looking at the screen coz it will appear dark. But since it's a laptop i'm sure you'll always be sitting in front of it. You won't be keeping it at a queer angle and still work on it. Get the Truelife if you plan on watching movies with a couple other people on your laptop.
I'm happy with my E1705 and i will bring it in class everyday... and play HITMAN blood money, er, i mean take notes on it. I just bought a skate back pack (from the makes of swiss army knife $30) which has a padded pocket for my notebook to fit in it so carrying it around won't be a problem. I'm not quite sure if that pocket is for laptops but it'll work. Although i must admit i had trouble fitting this thing in most other bags.
I don't know anything about IBM t60. Also look into E1405, they look pretty small.
Hope this helps. Goodluck.

I heard that "D10.1508: Building Blocks of Life" is a biochem course.

if anyone from LA needs a roomate, please let me know. i'm searching for a roomate, either for a 1bdr converted to two or possibly for the dorms, if i get stuck with it.

I'm looking for a roommate but i'm not from LA. Do i still qualify?

I'm also looking for a male roommate. I really don't care how many people I live with. If anybody is interested, pm me or email at [email protected].

I got a letter saying they wanted all my official transcripts and another $75 application fee? What the heck? They've already accepted me, took my $2500 deposit, received my immunization & health records, assigned a student ID #, said when I had to be there for orientation....

...What is up? They cannot possibly need more info. Is this just another way for them to make a little extra $$$?

Check your recipts and/or bank statements, because they should only charge you ONE secondary app. fee. Call Carmelita at our admin office to check if they do in fact have your payment. Sometimes they are a bit slow, but whatever you do DONT send money twice!

We (c/o 2010) will be getting an earlier start in our clinical education during our 2nd year. Therefore, our summer break after 1st year has been changed to begin on June 1st and end on July 8th. Then another 2 weeks from Aug 17 to Sept 3. I'm glad we're starting clinics earlier!

Hmm..where did you hear that? Do you know if everything is changed, like christmas break and our 2nd year schedule too?

I got a letter today from NYU... it doesn't state anything about christmas break or any other breaks...

Yeah... i got a letter saying from now on we'll get our Christmas/winter break for a week starting from 1st May - 7th May.
It also said "Enjoy the cool air from your ACs".

I haven't gotten one yet, I'm interested to see the changes.

Anyways I wanted to ask something about housing. Apparently everyone who has applied for NYU HOUSING will be informed of their status during the first week of August!!! Do us Dental Students get informed a bit earlier!? What a nightmare this could turn out to be...

Could the people who got their letters maybe summarize a few of the changes in breaks and vacation that have happenned??? I live far from NY which may be delaying the letter's arrival. thanks!

Okay...I'll type it out for ya guys since I type fast....

Dear Colleague,

The beginning of the academic year is only a few weeks away. As your arrival to NYU is approaching I watned to update you on some of the exciting things that have happened since my last letter.

This year's admission was as competitive as ever. Our applicant pool went up over 30% just in the last year. Close to 4,000 applicants competed for 235 freshman spots. You should be very proud to be part of the incoming class. You are the best class we have admitted in recent memory.

Being part of NYU, a research-One university, it is very important that our college shares the mission of our parent university. NYU College of Dentistry was recently ranked number 6 in a national research list. This is a phenomenal improvement. Only five years ago we were ranked number 41.

Over the last several years we have searched for top clinicians, teachers, and scientists, and have recruited almost 100 new faculty enriching what was already a highly-regarded group of teachers and researchers. For an update on some of these new faculty members, go to our brand new web site and see the latest issue of our award winning magazine Nexus (http://www.nyu.edu/dental/nexus/index.html).

One of our main concerns is always to improve our cirriculum. To allow our students to have an enriching clinical experience and provide better patient care we moved the entry point of our students into clinics to an earlier date during their second year. This modification of the D2 cirriculum will take effect for the first time with your class (2010). To accomodate this clinical enrichment program your freshman year will end on May 31, 2007. Summer vacation will take place between June 1 and July 8, 2007. Your second year will commence on July 9, 2007, with two additional weeks of summer break between August 17 and September 3. You will resume the second year on September 4, 2007.

I am sure you will find your experience at NYU fulfilling. I am looking forward to seeing you during orientation and on the first day of class. If you have any questions about this mailing or others that came before, please contact me at your convenience. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Yo Rob, when did you get this letter? The last 'letter' I received was regarding a final auditing and NYU requesting my transcripts.

Long time no talk bro. Are you ready for the big move?
