Yes, I realize that the article refers to undergrad. But the dental school is also in heart of NYC. Consequently, the article also applies to the dental school.

Yes, NYU is expensive. But other private dental schools will put you in debt, no doubt. Difference for 4-yr total tuition cost between NYU and other private schools is less than $50K, according to ADEA official guide. . . . . However, you are only young once.

what a pleasant article!

"NYU has coped in the past academic year with the deaths of four students, including a 19-year-old transfer student who committed suicide last week by jumping from a Manhattan apartment building. Three other students have jumped to their deaths since September."

dream school 😍

Haha, you're a funny guy/gal. syn_napse, what a nice name--you should know about "dreams" much better than I do. Living in NYC is a dream. Life is also but a dream. . .

The ladies in New York were definitely dreamy when I was there for the interview😀 ....however, Case has that and so much more:laugh:

Case has already rejected so many people very early on. . . . I don't think they are numero uno to many people right now. 😱

Ha😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

Ha😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

If you go to NYU...can you say hi to my asian bros and to all the nice looking ladies there for me? Explain to them that...it was very hard for xxxthedonxxx to decide not to go to NYU😀.

Don't worry Don, you're a pretty 😎 guy. I'm sure you'll find a lot of nice gals at Case. Plus, your XXX*2 rating doesn't hurt either.

I beg to differ. He's not that hot.

Come now, we all know NYU is everyone's last choice until it becomes their only choice.

NYU as a whole, with its location, diversity of student body and academic interests is very appealing to students. Living cost in NYC is of course the cost of having the NYC experience. There are soooooo many threads on SDN about NYU already...if you need enlightment please do a search and just type in NYU.
I don't think NYU dental is a dream school for everybody... but I think NYU as a whole is definitely very appealing, which is why it's voted #1 dream school in princeton review.
I agree with DDSY. I would want to experience NYC at least once in my life and I think this is the perfect time to do so because I certianly don't want to raise a family in NYC.
And to KOM, that might be the case for some people because NYU accept lots of students and they sometimes would lower the bar. But that certainly isn't the case for every nyu student... I've decided to go to NYUCD over other schools this year. All my friends / relative / professors... told me to go to NYU. They obviously don't know anything about dental schools, but NYU as a whole has a better reputation than other schools I turned down, especially international.

Not true at all. I am in to other schools and NYU is still at the top of my list.

I agree entirely with staroceanX. Living in NYC is a once in a lifetime experience and it's something I would probably never consider post-graduation. After visiting and researching NYUCD, I saw so many positive aspects to the school, program, and location. It seems that the two biggest negatives to NYU is the cost and the large number of students. Coming from a Big 10 university, I'm used to large classes so that's not a negative to me. The cost is still scary though.

Also, my mom (nurse) has obviously told all of her doctor and nurse colleagues and all of them immediately say "go to NYU." Most of their opinions are probably influenced by the idea of living in Manhattan, the portrayal of the school in the media/popular culture, or NYU itself (not the dental school).

Many of the doctors (still not familiar with the dental program) like the idea of NYU b/c they believe that most of the east coast schools are more progressive than the midwest in terms of technology and philosophy. Also being from the midwest, many recommended NYU (or anywhere out of the midwest) to get a different perspective and a broader experience.

**What it all comes down to is what you want in your school. I like what NYU has to offer, but I'm still waiting on my state school. Even if I get accepted to my state, I'm still going to highly consider NYU. I'm trying to not let cost be a deciding factor, but that's impossible b/c it IS going to be a factor.

My personal bottom 3 include:

-Harvard -- 3 dentists told me not to go there unless I wanted to teach
-UOP -- how can you learn in 3 years what columbia claims can't even be taught in 4?
-LLU -- God school? To be a doctor? Umm... no thanks...
-In fact, I'm not interested in any school on the west coast. I don't do earthquakes and the whole falling into the ocean thing too well.

I would go to NYU over all of these.

Completely agree about UOP.

This would be me if I had to live in NYC....no offense to NYers, I personally would go nuts if I had to live in such a big city. Tall buildings scare me :scared: unless I were going to base jump off of them.

BTW, I am in no way mocking this terrible tragedy...just saying how much I dislike large cities.

What a tragedy🙁

"Knowledge is food for thought so I wisely swallow."

Totally agree... the big city factor scares me too, although I might regret turning down the NYC schools, I feel that NYC isn't exactly the best setting for an aspiring professional. WAY too many distractions!

However, NYU has an excellent program (and a diverse student body) and if money was not an issue, it would make turning them down even harder.

I've lived 20 minutes outside of Manhattan my whole life, ive been there (even played gigs in some of the most famous clubs in the world) a million times and I still wouldnt want to live there... Its a cool place to go visit if your really bored or a tourist, because theres a lot of things to do, hang out and hit up a couple bars/resturants, the village is always cool for some live music or shopping.. every other store on any street is a starbucks, so if your into the putting a small cup of coffee on lay away thing... lol.. But I would NEVER want to live there... Way too expensive, crowded, dirty and I dont like the yuppie attitude.. Just my personal opinion..

Looks like I might be posting this every year. 😉

I believe the article primarily refers to undergraduate students. It would be interesting to find out how many NYU undergraduates stay on to attend NYU graduate/professional schools. In other words, how many of NYU students continue on wishing to remain in a "dream" state?

Tooth decay,

your picture is very deceiving. it makes me think you're very intelligent which you may be.

I don't blame you. I guess trekkies would rather want to be in outer space than NYC for d school.

He probably found out how big his loans were going to be once he got out and figured he would just nip that in the bud.

Tooth decay,

Deception is not the goal, rather the goal is Anonymity. Anonymity= Privacy minus Identity. As far as my intelligence goes, I would like to quote Winston Churchill who said:"I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”

Actually, I thought tooth decay's post was sagacious. A clear succinct point, that many may experience the illusions of grandeur in the big city - b/c that environment is not conducive for all personality types/goals. If anything, I would have quoted Alan Greenspan, and not Churchill.

"I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said. "

I can't be the only british literature fan here ...

Can anyone explain?

Their clinical component is rumoured to be quite weak. This is according to faculty that know their program and can compare it to other programs around the country.
