I didn't decide whether I go to NYU or not...because of some bad rumors..
Is it true that they kick out 30~35 students every year..And Is it too hard fot students to get a chance to treat patients during 3 or 4 years because of crazy number of students(265 students)?
give me some advice and information for that...
thank you~!

my brother went there. from what he told me is this: yes they do "kick out" some kids in the first year but what he said is that those people had it coming to them. they didnt study and sometimes didnt even come to class. as far as not getting patients he said that it is not a problem. there are like a couple million people in new york city. there is going to be patients. the thing is that it might be hard to find a SPECIFIC patient (like your 4th endo or 3rd bridge or something) but i think its like that at any school. this is just what my brother told me but hope it helps.

I had 90 people in my freshman class DS1. we lost 10.
3 decided they did not like dentistry, 2 were kicked out because of cheating, the other 5 failed either didactics or could had problems in clinic. So if you consider that NYU has what 300 + students the ratio is still 10%.

Ok, you must learn to take some SDNers with a grain of salt. Most of us are clueless and hapless pre-dents. You, and only, should be the one who decides where to go to d-school.

Now, here is my take on NYU:

1-NYU DOES NOT kick students out. That is just silly and nonsensical. No school accepts students only to kick’em out later. What happens is the following:

NYU has a very large class. Therefore, you have tons of students on either side of the stat average (DAT and GPA). Example: school x has 40 students and their DAT average is 19; thus, it is likely that about 20 are below 19. out of those 20, not more than 5 will have DATs as low as say 15 or 16. out of those 5, someone wont be able to handle the curriculum. School y has 300 students with a class average of 19. therefore, there will be tons of students with very low DATs or GPAs. Expectedly, some will drop out. Number wise, it looks scary, but percentage wise, it is not that different from other schools.

All in all, the school does not kick you out. But if you cannot handle the curriculum, you will kick yourself out cus the school wont make adjustments for you. If I were you, I would not worry about whether NYU is good enough. I would worry about whether I am good enough for NYU’s curriculum. Be confident and stop thinking that you’ll be weak enough to be kicked out.

2-as far as having enough patients, don’t worry about that: NYU has plenty of students but it also has tons of patients. NYU grads have good clinical experience and many of them get into competitive residencies…(check the ortho residency at UNC chapel hill and OMFS website of penn for example).

Would I go to NYU?
I personally would not because it is super-expensive. It costs an arm and a leg to attend NYU. And don’t listen to those who tell you that anyone can get onto NYU. It is simply not true. And please ignore the stats page that tripod has cus its outdated. There are some very good applicants who go there. Also, keep in mind that the location of NYU is unsurpassed in terms of glamour, class, and demographics. Kips plaza alone makes yo uwanna go to NYU. Besides, NYUs professors are very approachable when you have questions or difficulties with the material. They also have additional sessions for those who need them. In other words, they have mechanisms to lever the negative effects of a large class size. One minor problem is that they take a long time to grade exams because of the large class size, so students get frustrated while waiting for their course grades.

one correction, you are assuming schools x and y will accept students with same mean gpa's and dat's. that is wholly incorrect. nyu, sure tey accept some very qualified students, but they dip real low and i can assure you that their mean/median gpa's and dat's are significantly lower than the majority of schools. another comment, while many dent schools merge some portions of their curriculum with med students, nyu is doing this with nursing. i'm sorry, i would hope to learn more detailed anatomy and pharmacology than nursing students - and no disrespect is intended here, nurses are extremely important health care providers.

A merger with nursing school doesn't mean that they will teach dental students the stuff that nursing students learn. Please get your facts right.

A merger with nursing school does, however, mean you can frolick and elope with those hot 20-something nurses just eager to get that free prophylaxis 👍

Dude, you read my mind again!!!
You are one freaking great ambassador of the human race.

I think the class of 2008 lost 6 students first year. So much for that rumor!

As a student at NYU, if you get kicked out you deserve it. I know of a student that failed 4 classes his second year and is now repeating the 2nd year. Most schools will toss you to the curb. In general, you can fail 3 classes a year and remediation in the summer without repeating the whole year. They have this new program in place to catch failing students BEFORE they fail out. They hired some sort of specialist that works with the students to find out why they are failing and correct the issue.

Also, with $100 million in renovations on the way ( $30 million already spent) this place is going to be kick ass! Most schools didn't even cost $100 million to build so just imagine all the cool new things we will have. I probably won't benefit, but the class of 2009 and on will.

As for patients, there are plenty. You will never have an empty chair unless they dis-appoint...but then again we have a ton of emergencies that come in so you have a good chance of filling your empty seat.

go to www.nyu.edu/dental and learn about the school with all those new videos they put up. Also read the Nexus ( An NYUCD publication) to find out what the school is really up too. http://www.nyu.edu/dental/nexus/index.html . Although the newest one that came out this week is not up yet. Stop by the school and get a hard copy, you will be pretty amazed with how much this school shapes the field of dentistry.

Make a decision on facts, not rumors on a website where names have no faces or identities.

Do not listen to the rumors, because that is all they are. Also, past grads did have it pretty bad and all that is changing if not changed so their bad experience is a thing of the past.

I wonder if that person is a life coach like from Nip/Tuck. 😱

also keep in mind that a large class also means that you'll find some cool friends to hang out with or go to the gym with. in fact, the coolest guy on SDN (phremius) goes to NYU.

you know quite a lot about NYU, how's that? I've been lucky enough to get into NYU, but have yet to hear back from anywhere else yet... 🙁 You're right about it being super expensive..just thinking about their 4 yr total makes my heart skip a beat!

Mind if i ask when your apps were sent out?? Mine were sent on 9/15 and I still havent heard a word back from NYU... Have a friend whos were sent in afterwards and she got in already (with similar stats). I called them twice and they give me the same schtick... Your app is complete, under review and will be notified by mail or email when a decision is made...

mysteree, i know about it cus i live right next to lincoln center and i used to live on 36th street and first ave. i am a nyc boy, as they say...lol...anyways, if you are young, then NYU's tuition is doable, provided that you live in queens. there is nothing wrong with living in queens with no cable tv for 4 years. do that and then NYU becomes as affordable as other private schools. and here's what you can tell yourself to feel better about NYU: "i will get a good education in a cool city and make kick-butt connections"....and by the way, NYU's post-grad programs are highly esteemed and coveted. get the connections...and keeop in mind that NYU kids go everywhere, including the most compettitve residencies in the country. dont mind the basjing in SDN. besides, the tuition at NYU is around 40 a year i think. at columbia it's just 36. columbia appears way less expesive cus of cheaper housing. like i said, go to queens

schlepp to nyc from queens everyday? yikes 😱 where is housing for yall anyway? 26th st?
