Just got accepted off of the waiting list and need tons of information-
-When is orientation/first day of classes?
-Where do most 1st years live? All in Rubin? Is housing guarenteed?
-Is there a gym/cafeteria in the dorm, or do most students find other means?
-Any other things I should prepare for as an incoming 1st year?

I've done a search and have come up with very little. Thanks!

I'm not a student, but I asked many of the same questions as you did when I (seriously) considered going there.

I can answer the third question:

there are both a gym and a cafeteria downstairs from you in Rubin Hall. Being an NYU student also gives you access to the Paladium downtown. About a dozen first and second year students I surveyed said they normally eat outside of the cafeteria. I joined a few of them for lunch at some restaurant a block away. Cafeteria's probably the cheapest option. There are also many grocery stores around Murray Hill.

Contact some students at the school directly. They were AWESOME to me when I emailed them in May!

I just finished my first year at NYU. I'll try to answer your questions as best i can

-I believe that orientation begins on the 23rd of August. You should get information in the mail soon. Classes begin the following Monday on the 30th.

-Most first years live in Rubin. Housing is guarenteed for all students. Rubin is not the best place to live, but it's cheap, close to lecture halls and social.

-There is a gym in the basement of Rubin. Not very pretty but it has the basics. You pay for membership. Also as was said before you have access to the Palladium downtown. GREAT gym...just a pain in a butt to get to since it's downtown. There are 2 cafeterias on campus-some stuff is overpriced but you can get a meal card so that you don't have to shell out cash when you get lunch or need a quick snack. There are also lots of restaurants in the area so you got options.

-As for preparing for 1st year...my biggest piece of advice is to sleep and relax. You are going to be wishing for free time within a week of classes starting. 😀

Congrats on getting off the waitlist. Let me know if you have any other questions.
