Aren't deposits non-refundable? I thought that was the whole point of them - to make sure people only hold spots if they're serious about it.

Refundable up till May 15th.

At this point I'm just hoping for a waitlist rather than a rejection on Feb 15

Looking through last year's posts, I don't think they reject interviewees for the most part.

It's true that most get waitlisted, but I think I've seen a few on mdapps and sdn from last year that got a straight rejection post-int.

as i recall, the compiled stats on nyu show that about half of those that interview ultimately get accepted.

Yay for the proverbial coin flip! 😉

Seriously, I'm with Garrison -- no whammy no whammy no whammy.

ok so here's what i have to say about this. i work for a doctor at nyu and she's on the executive admissions committee which used to meet every thursday from 8 to 9 am (from what i know there are 3 committees) their last meeting was the last thursday in january i think it was january 25. no more meetings after that. so i guess they took all the decisions and they're waiting for people to withdraw their acceptances?? anyways my doctor is not a lot of help although she knows im applying, i was trying to figure out the best approach to have her do sth in my favor i just don't know how to go about it since she's somewhat uncooperative. anyways good luck to everyone.

Ok so in my opinion, it's pretty clear that if we don't have an acceptance by now, we should be waiting for a rejection or waitlist! 🙁
Damn you NYU for breaking our beautiful hearts 😡

that's my guess. i'm figuring they've already accepted enough ppl to fill a class, it's just a matter of which of those ppl will accept them.

Keep your head up! They sent out at an acceptance yesterday, so its clearly not over. They may not be sending out huge bundles of acceptances, but more will come. They are just taking their time.

i really hope you're right...

i've been feeling really defeated all morning...starting to think about how painful it would be to repeat the application process...

SO thank you for the optimism, cowme, it's very much appreciated 🙂

true. but what's unclear (i haven't seen it in compiled stats) is how many acceptees ultimately come off the waitlist. so at this point, it is *possible* that most future acceptances will be off the waitlist. i don't think i will have the patience to sit around on a waitlist until may+ when other schools have accepted me.

at the same time, the ppl we know of them accepting lately have been unusual applicants (2 urms, 1 international). so it is also *possible* that they're picking out the ppl who are head-and-shoulders above the rest while deciding who among the rest of us will be in another batch of acceptances.

i guess we'll know by two weeks from now.

edit:

*if* it turns out that there will be no other batch of acceptances, then this thread should serve as a warning to future nyu applicants. if you can't interview in time to make the first mid-december batch of acceptances, your chances of getting into nyu (at least without being waitlisted) are probably diminished, because acceptances come in a big december batch and then a trickle. let's see if this is true.

Last year, there were 468 accepted out of 940 interviewees. I really doubt that a majority of so many applicants come off the waitlist. They still had interviews one or two weeks ago, so I'm gonna expect one more big day of acceptances before the waitlist notifications.

I think a lot of those 468 have to come off the waitlist. I'm not sure about the rules, but I've heard that the AAMC doesn't allow medical schools to send out more acceptances at any given point than they have spots in their classes. So a lot of us will be waitlisted and accepted as people drop out. While a lot of people will hold on until May, I'd bet there will be some movement in March when the Ivies start letting people in. Here's hoping we hear sooner rather than later.

Does anyone else here go through acute depression every day around 1 or 2 when you realize that you aren't getting accepted today?

It seems like they might only be sending out new acceptances on Mondays at this point. I doubt they're getting enough people declining per day to warrant sending out new acceptances every day. But I know what you mean.

Anyone else find NYUs numbers to be confusing? Their website says average MCAT is 32P. MSAR (last year's) says median mcat is 35Q.

Now, I know mean and meadian are different averages, but seriously, wtf.

msar lists the *accepted* average. does the website give the *matriculated* average? accepted should be higher than matriculated. ppl with big numbers go to other places.

It's easy to get. They accept a lot of people with 35ish MCATs, and a few people they like with low MCATs. You can get those stats if you accept 3 35's for every 25.

but in this case it's not a mean versus median issue. the issue is that the nyu website reports the average mcat for those who *matriculate*, while the msar (as i recall) reports the median mcat for those who are *accepted*. a lot more ppl are accepted than matriculate, and of those accepted that choose not to matriculate it makes sense that they would have higher numbers (i.e. they go to harvard, hopkins, etc instead).

This gives me hope... maybe all of the super-wiz kids with their 35+ MCAT will withdraw their acceptance and they'll let me in. I like those numbers (32, 3.7) that are reported on NYU's website a hell of a lot more than what mdapps shows for this year's cycle.

i think it's safe to keep hoping that, among those of us who haven't gotten the acceptance email yet, that there's still hope of getting in off the waitlist. i'm certainly not one of the applicants with a 35+ MCAT, but i don't think they'd interview me if my MCAT would keep me from getting in...so we just need to wait for the nobel prize winners to get into harvard, and then things will start moving...

right?

Hahaha, dead on. For the most part, when do Harvard/Hopkins/Mayo/Duke/etc. send out acceptances? AKA, when will we see some NYU movement?

last year's nyu thread (i posted the link) sheds some light on this, as ppl posted when they got off the waitlist. i'm too lazy to read through it to gather a general assessment. i think a lot of the non-rolling top schools send out acceptances in march.

does someone want to call nyu tomorrow to get the scoop at this point? acceptances or waitlist? big batch or trickle?

not it.

Harvard, Cornell, Columbia and Yale are non-rolling and make desicions from mid to late March. So perhaps after that lot goes through.

today at 1:57 EST, I had the following conversation with the NYU Admissions secretary:
Me: Hi, I was just wondering if you were done sending out acceptances for this year's cycle?
Secretary: No, we will continue sending them out until February 15th.

So stop with the negative attitudes! We're 2 weeks from the posts that you guys are writing. :luck:

Somehow I highly doubt that I will get a flat out acceptance before Feb. 15 when there are people floating around here with 37's who haven't heard back yet.... damn my 33.

i don't doubt this. someone got accepted just yesterday. but we saw what, one, two, acceptances reported on sdn last week? one so far this week? if they're gonna trickle like this then i might as well accept now that it will most likely be a rejection or waitlist for me. but if there's a big batch coming then that's a different story and i'm ready to change my attitude. does someone want to call to ask if it will be a batch or trickle, or how many more they're going to offer?

Don't worry about your MCAT score. Judging from the way this application cycle has gone for me, it doesn't matter much after you get to the interview.

this is probably a subject for another thread...but do you really think that's true, that once an interview is offered we're all on a level playing field?

my mcat score (30) doesn't merit some of the interviews that i've received (nyu, harvard, stanford)...and no matter how well the interviews are going (ex. my nyu interviewer explicitly told me me that she liked me and would write a positive eval), i'm beginning to think that i'll only be accepted off of waitlists after people with higher mcat's have to start giving up multiple acceptances...

I think it depends on the school. Some schools do say once you make it to the interview everyone is on a level playing field. But if they don't say it directly, I think the rest of your application is still a major factor in the final decision.

props on the interviews!

lol that's funny. 32, 3.7 here. so it's definitely possible.

I'm sorry...what does this mean?😕

it means good job.

this whole nyu thing is starting to freak me out. i interviewed at several other (considered more competitive) medical schools that are non-rolling, from whom i wont hear until march.. and my unknown status with nyu does not bode well. 🙁

Yes, but Harvard 32, 3.7

Beats my Binghamton 33, 3.9 with a 10 foot pole
Are we still doing the "my school name is better than you school name" schpeel? Yes, schpeel is Harvard word. 🙂. Let me level with you guys, if I get into Harvard or Yale and they give me a decent scholarship, I'll let go of NYU for my fine SDNers.

Are you sure? Never heard of anyone from Bing going to NYU. Also, I feel like only 3 Bing students got interviews from NYU this application season.

I know of two people from the Class of 2010 who went to Bing.

i know you meant well by this comment...but seriously?
