hi,

does anyone know what the process is like for obtaining a green card after graduating from dental school?

from some i've heard that it only takes 2-3 years, from others i've heard it could take up to 10-15. also, are there no guarantees that you'll be able to get one even if you get a job as a dentist? thanks in advance for your help.

once u start working with ur H1b visa, u need to ask ur employer to file a greencard for you.

time usually varies, depending on many factors.....

country of citizenship (few countries -india/china/mexico usually take longer time than others)

if u have done ur masters degree in dentistry. (heard with masters ur application will move faster)

if ur employer is an university, GC processing may be faster.

Make sure u dont change ur employer once u file ur greencard orelse chances are that it may get delayed

LUCK sometimes.

There are no guarantees in life.
Your employer has to file an application for you. It is a real prolonged process.

after all the pain and hard work we take to get visa to the US, secure admission to dental school, graduate and start working.....processig of GC really sucks......i bet ur lucky if u get your HIB visa first in this crucial phase of recession / and change in govt policies

i see.. it seems like it's not going to be a breeze and there's a lot of waiting involved. i guess i just have to hope for the best. thanks for the info!

it purely depends on the country you are from. If you are from countries like India / China / Mexico, it may take several years to get the GC. In case of India, it is worst.

Also there are 3 categories for GC. EB1, EB2 and EB3. EB1 is for highly scholar professionals such as researchers. NOTE: Obtaining PhD degree does not mean you are in EB1. You need to prove with some extreme research papers and high involvement in researches (could be several years of experience in research field). EB2 is for Master Degree candidates. And EB3 - Rest of the candidates (manily bachelors degree). Also EB category is decided by your employer. Having Masters Degree does not qualify you to enter in EB2 category. Your position / employer's requirements should mention that he / she is looking for MS candidate.

Also getting H1B is difficult nowadays. Given this economic condition, the rules are getting extreme tough. 😱

I hope this helps.

Ya, you are right, it really sucks because I have one of my friend who graduated in 2008 as a DDS and struggling to get good paying job. You know the employer over here in USA they take advantage of your H!B visa and pay very low as compared to the PR or Citizen of US. It's really hard man after all this struggle.

I agree with you. Also, there are no guarantees that you will get your GC just because you were sponsored. Even your attorney will say the same thing. It is a long process and the Queue is very long for India/China. I would worry about graduating and getting a sponsor for H1B first. Good luck.
