I withdrew from Yale on Friday so somebody's going to be very happy!

Dragonfly,

I assume that you dropped Yale for Mayo? What were some of the salient factors that nudged you to Mayo? I have a few days to decide.

Congrats yigit on UNC!!! Did they offer you a good package? If you are instate the tuition is crazy cheap!! 🙂

Testing...

Wasn't there a post from yigit about getting into UNC? It looks as if Christiangirl's response has bumped that post into limbo. What's going on? Am I just imagining things? I'm very groggy right now, so I may be mising something obvious...
😕 😕 😕 😱 😕 😕 😕

Hi omores. No, I posted here even though yigit's post has always been in the "Tulane" section started by fastjoe.

For those waiting on MSUCHM, I just withdrew my acceptance today.

Good Luck,

has anyone heard anything about loyola's wait list or know of anyone withdrawing their acceptance? i am dying to get in

Christiangirl.

Thank you for clearing that up. My brain feels much better now.

😉 😉 😉 😉 😉

Note: I know this graemlin is supposed to be "wink," but I'm using it to designate "can't quite keep both of my eyes open today because I didn't get enough sleep last night although I'm in a good mood so I'm still smiling despite the fact that I'm groggy," OK?

Has anyone heard from Baylor or Cornell about ranking on the wait list? (top third, bottom half, etc)? I'm waiting to hear from both and neither will tell me where i stand or what my chances are. thanks! congrats to everyone who's getting in! 🙂

Oceandust, I'm from Minnesota and have personal reasons that make staying close to home for a while compelling. Despite that, giving up Yale was heart-wretching. This was my analysis. Mayo pros: early clinical experience, small class size, excellent instructors and facilities, cheap tuition, very happy students. Mayo cons: Rochester is isolated and doesn't have many young people. (I would like to have at least a couple of dates during my four years in medical school! 😉) Cold weather makes winter here unpleasant. Summers are beautiful, though. Yale pros: no grades, excellent instructors, good financial aid, close proximity to other graduate/undergraduate schools, very happy students. Yale cons: far from home at a difficult time for my family.

Christiangirl and others are correct when they advised that you really can't make a poor choice. Either will provide an excellent education. The trick is figuring where YOU will be happiest the next four years. That's not always easy to discern, though, I know. Best of luck to you in choosing.

Christiangirl--have you made your househunting trip to Rochester yet? Were you successful? I seem to recall you saying that you did research for a while at Mayo--any good housing tips? 🙂

Wow, this is great, I didn't even post and people are talking about me? Now if only I can get some of the girls around here doing the same!! 😉

Yeah I got into UNC. Unbelievable. After all this, getting into my top choice is really wierd. And the fact that I'm not a North Carolina resident (yet!!! 😀 ) is proof as to how strange the admissions process is.

ANyways, good luck to everyone. Turn up the disco music cause I'm in one of my wierd moods. This is why my parents didn't let me eat candy as a kid. 😀 🙄 😱 😉 😡

YES!!! Someone else going through Baylor waitlist hell with me. 😉 I've been stalking them the way Christiangirl was stalking Duke. 😀

Baylor does admit to having a ranked list -- my belief is that it is essentially the same as the rankings they made after you interviewed -- they just went off of that, and once the class was full, everyone left was on the waiting list. Second piece of interesting news - they may have actually rejected people post-interview this year (according to a poster on another site), so the waitlist may not be as long as in past years. They have two waitlists -- residents and non-residents, and both are ranked -- because of the "70% rule" the non-resident spots are very competitive. Now for the bad news -- as of three weeks ago the class was oversubscribed by 20+ students!! As of last week, the class was still full, but I'm not sure if was still oversubscribed. They are apparently still expecting some movement, mostly in the form of deferrals and withdrawals post-deposit check -- they expect this sort of movement to finally settle out by the first-second week of July!! (uh, 2-3 weeks before orientation). The only minutely bright spot in this is the strange TX rule that all TX schools (Baylor included) may not offer admission to a student currently holding a spot at another TX school after June 1 -- I'm hoping this might increase the non-resident odds. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have, I might have forgotten something!

Thanks for the info lilycat- i'm out of state too and have not been able to get any info out of the admissions office. Unfortunate that the class is overbooked, but I've also heard that it's easier to get in if your out of state at this point. I hope we both get in! Out of curiosity, is Baylor your first choice? I'm waitlisted at Baylor and Cornell - my top two. I still can't decide which one is my top. Both are great schools, unique curriculum, students very happy, i have family in both places and love both cities. All this waiting is excruciating. I remember finishing the MCAT and thinking, "ahh, now it's all over, I can get back to my life." yeah, right. A year later I still can't wait to know where I'm going! thanks- 😕 🙂

Hi mayriver -- yeah, I think Baylor is my top choice at this point. I'm also waiting on Wash U, but I think the chances are getting pretty slim now. I don't know, I just really liked Baylor from day one. It's weird, because I'm trying to start looking for housing and stuff at my current school now, so I think I may have to put some sort of upper limit on how long I can wait. By the way, how do you feel about the Baylor curriculum changes for this coming fall? Would that be a factor for you at all?

Good luck to you with your lists -- Cornell's a great school too. One of my very good friends who was applying with me just got in off the waitlist a few weeks ago, and he's thrilled. Hope it works out for you, either way!

I know someone who just got recently accepted into UCDavis and turning down a few schools... MCP Hahnemann and USC, of the top of my head.... That's two more open slots, at least....

I wish all of you lots of luck as always!!! Keep your head up!!! You'll never know what happens....

Has anybody heard any news from SUNY Syracuse, SUNY Downstate, Tufts, or Temple? Esp SUNY Downstate?

I'm starting to sound like a broken record 😕

Anyone hear anything from SUNY Stonybrook, NYU, or Mount Sinai???

Hi Guardian:

I got off the list at Downstate four weeks ago. Hang in there. It will come. I heard they will be calling students until August.

Best of luck 🙂

Christiangirl--Thanks for the tips! I'm really excited about starting classes this fall but this whole moving thing is a bit stressful. I'm thinking of buying a house 😱 in Rochester, but the whole process is so overwhelming that I'm starting to warm to the idea of an apartment. Apartment hunting (and considering the possibility of roommates) is more difficult, though, because I have a cat. I will probably drive down to Rochester this weekend and perhaps again next week until I find somewhere. Let me know if you'd like a apartment-hunting companion when you visit in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll have found something by then, but it would be fun to get to know you before class starts.

my g/f just turned down harvard, boston u,nymc ...so thats 3 more slots opening...

Radioradiation---WoW!!!
Where is your g/f going? Please don't say Yale...I might cry! But seriously, congrats to her and to you...you must be very proud. 😉 😀

space... i'm sorry to say but its Yale. Dont worry though, it wasnt off the waitlist. Besides, I have heard from a reliable source that the waitlist at yale is constructed tight and small, so there is a substantial chance of getting in off the list.

Is it bad to call a school to ask if their class has been filled yet, how many more students they plan to take, etc? The last thing I want to do at this point is piss them off, but not having this info is killing me...
😕

SL-I heard that up to 30% of their class can come from the wait list pool *fingers crossed*

Amitha-I've asked, don't worry it's not like they'll ask for your SS# if you ask these questions (if they do hang up 😉). However, the admission secretaries give you real vague answers. One guy said that the waitlist at their school was less than 100, really ball-parked it.

Last night, got a call from Penn that I got in off the waitlist. I'm going to revisit Penn in a couple weeks to decide. The big differences with the other school I'm holding (Yale) are the grading system (more competitive at Penn?), curriculum (only 1.5 yrs basic sci), city size, and financial difficulties of the Penn med center. And the Sixers 😉

Can anyone with experience with either place comment? Would appreciate it.

Oceandust,
As you may know from my posts, I am dying to get into Yale, but that's only because I sadly didn't apply to UPENN. I didn't think I really had a chance. Anywho, I did research at CHOP for 1.5 years and I have to say after meeting so many med students...it really is a great place. The grade thing does not bring competition there and the facilities are simply unmatched by those in New Haven. CHOP, HUP, and Pennslyvania Hospital are just fantastic and the opportunities for research in the new Abramson and biomedical research buildings are unreal. And they are pretty much open for you to explore....Upenn does a fantastic job of catering to their students needs and desires to meet whatever career goals one might have. I have a friend who even took a year off to start a dot.com and they said no problem, let us know how it goes, and come back when you are ready.
Now as for Philly itself, I can say it would definitely provide you with more stuff to do than New Haven and the trains run to NYC and DC on the speed lines rather quickly if you need more. Not to mention, some of the surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs (aka Cheshnut Hill and Manayunk) have unique charm. At the very least explore them.
Ok this is getting long but Upenn is great and I envy your decision. Best of luck wherever you choose and let us know!
😉 😀 😉

Hey Oceandust. Congratulations!!! I was just wondering if you could tell us whether you were on the first tier of the waitlist, or the "very top of the first tier of the waitlist." Thanks!

Hey oceandust, did you write off Mayo?

Thanks for your responses.

Christiangirl; I haven't written Mayo off entirely, but will probably do so by tomorrow. Reasons: been in the midwest nearly all my life (would like to stay on E coast), I like the larger University feel as opposed to medicine only, and research. It's a wonderful school, and I had a great time interviewing, and the money and clinical/faculty resources they offer is unmatched. Thing is, I figure I saved some $ by doing undergrad essentially free. I just don't know that with the other factors relating to quality of life if one of the other places would fit me better.

I was indeed on the "top of the first tier waitlist" at Penn. I intend to visit Penn campus in a couple weeks, during their 'orthopaedics' stint in their last week of class. I'll be able to meet more people, get a feel of class/curriculum, Philly etc. I know that New Haven's clinical facilities do not hold a candle to Penn's vast behemoth of HUP, CHoP, etc etc (tho I am a bit worried for their financial turmoil). As far as Yale, I've been really attracted by the Yale Sys, and I figure YNHH Hosp will suffice for med school purposes. Also NYC and Boston are a relative stone's throw, though New Haven itself cannot compare in size and grandeur to Philly.

Hey oceandust!!! Sounds like you have given this much thought. 🙂 Maybe our paths will cross in four years with residency. Best wishes at Yale or Penn!! Keep us posted!!

Has ANYONE heard from the University of Chicago that's on the waitlist there? Does anyone know if the class is currently oversubscribed? I haven't heard anything or seen anything on any message boards recently and was wondering what's going on. Thanks.

Does anyone know anything about the Vanderbilt waitlist? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I hate to continue in this line of postings, but i HAVE to ask.... does anyone know anything about the UNC wait list? how many are on it? how many generally get in? i'm dying to know and the admissions office is already sick of my questions.

Also, yigit (i think you posted earlier this week that you are going to UNC)--how did they contact you? Congrats on getting in....

Thanks for any info/advice anyone can offer!

i just found out that i was placed on the alternates list at suny brooklyn. is it like upstate, where alternate list is higher priority than the waitlist? i hope they aren't synonyms 😱

For those of you with multiple acceptances.... Please give up a seat for others to seat on!!! 😀

Good luck to those of you still waiting.... 😎

Re: those asking about the SUNY schools a few posts ago;

I know that they have this lag time from the end of May til the middle or end of June before they take anyone off the waitlist. Just sit tight, when that time of June comes they rocket through the list because most people by that time have a pretty good idea of where the might go. Also, SUNY-Buffalo is holding off on admissions until their new administration is in.... 😀

Petunia,

Why don't you email or call Dr. Hoole and straight up ask him your chances? That's what I did. I think my words were "are you actively considering my application" (as opposed to just sitting on it to be on the safe side). He emailed me back and said I had a decent chance and a couple weeks later he called to accept me. Are you accepted somewhere else cause you could always remind him of that. It's getting to be crunch time and I assume that in the next couple weeks they'll have a good idea of how many more people are going to get in off the waitlist.

Now I have a question...
How's parking in Chapel Hill? Do I need to live within walking distance of school? I still have no place to live.

Good luck.
😉 😡 😱 😎 😉 😀

Is this the longest running thread in history?

yigit,

Parking in Chapel Hill is really very difficult. If you CAN live within walking distance, I'd go for that option. But it may be really tough to find a place at this point in time. I think that the school actually publishes a list of other med students seeking roommates, so you may want to contact the admissions office and ask about that. Or you could check out the non-cirricular forums on the MS1 web page (http://www.med.unc.edu/year1resource.htm). They often have people seeking roommates or trying to rent out apartments.

But if you are hoping for a parking pass, I've heard that you cannot be within a 2-mi radius of the school "as the crow flies" (not driving distance). Otherwise there is no hope for parking.

Also....thanks for the advice. I emailed Dr. Hoole about a month ago, but I will try again. It's tough because I work in a lab that is on the floor below the admissions office. I would go up there every day if I didn't think that it would hurt my chances by making me seem really annoying. I am just praying for patience at this point.

Thanks again..... and congrats on getting in. That's quite an accomplishment for being out of state.

Radioradiation,

I'm just curious to find out what tipped the scales to Yale for your girlfriend over Harvard. I'll be going to Yale, and turned down Penn and Columbia, but didn't get into Harvard. 🙁 I'm from Boston, so it would have been nice to stay here. Either choice is great, and I look forward to seeing your g/f in the fall.

🙂

Kermit,

Curious as to what tipped the scales for you in terms of Yale vs. Penn.

Trying to make that agonizing decision right now.

Thx.

Oceandust,

First, congrats on the choice! What a great position to be in. I got into Penn straight and off the first tier of Yale's waitlist. So, for a while, I was going to Penn. I think Penn is a stellar program, and my only complaint about the program is the grading system, which is p/f only for the first term. Penn has a larger class, bigger hospitals, and bigger city. What it came down to for me was that I felt Yale actually put their money where their mouth is in terms of cooperative and congenial environments via the Yale system (no grades first two years, optional exams). From what I hear from friends already in school, grades vs. no grades makes a huge difference on quality of life. Yale seemed like a smaller, close knit community, with everyone convening around Harkness for lunch and a comraderie between professors and students that was clearly apparent the two times I visited. Also, in terms of ease of living, I actually liked the fact that the University apts. are two blocks from Sterling Hall and that the newly renovated dorms are right next door (I hate driving or commuting). If you did want to live away from campus, Yale has suburb and beach options. Penn has good suburb and urban options as well. Yale, like Penn, can draw a lot of intangibles from the undergrad campus and other professional/grad schools. The fact that Yale will send kids on international relief missions(e.g., India's earthquake) if students just request it says a lot for their nurturing administration. When I spoke with both MS1s and MS2s at Penn and Yale, I got the impression that Penn students were slightly more stressed and competitive than Yalies. In terms of match, Penn students get to stay at HUP and CHoP, which are awesome. I know you shouldn't put so much stock in match lists, but I did feel like an overwhelming majority stayed in Philly. I just didn't think I could stay in one place for that long. Yale's matchlist was more diverse in terms of location the last few years, which was important to me. As you probably know, only a few students actually stay at YNHH. Yale also gave me more scholarship money than Penn, and their budget is a bit less (not sure if money is a concern). These were my personal points, however flawed. I guess the big things to consider are the following: Do you want to live in a bigger or smaller city? Do you want a more urban lifestyle or suburban lifestyle? Do you want grades or a thesis? Either place will get you where you want to go. I just felt the smaller community at Yale would be the best way for me. Good luck to you in your decision, and feel free to contact me off-line if you'd like to talk more. 🙂

I'm number 200!!!

Do I win anything?

yeah... a trout slap for a stupid post! 🙂 😉

To mayriver and anyone else waiting on Baylor -- as of today, their class is no longer oversubscribed, it's just completely full. 🙄 They said they typically get a bunch of withdrawals in July.

On a similar note, several of my friends who are on waitlists elsewhere have mentioned they have also been told that waitlists are moving much more slowly this year. Anyone want to hypothesize what's going on differently this year?

Dear lilycat and other waitlisters,
I too am waiting and agonizing over this whole process. My school of choice is Yale and according to Silverman, the director of admissions, he said the waitlists in general are moving so slowly this year due to a few reasons...here being the top 3:
(1) students at many schools have been granted extentions way past the May 15th deadline due to "circumstances"--family concerns, financial aid, etc (2) people are flat out holding on to multiple acceptances still (which if you are and you are reading this...I'm going to find out where you live 😱 😕 😳 😡 ) (3) it is particularly hard to get into some schools this year because they are growing in popularity among applicants (Duke, Baylor and Yale are probably prime examples).
Now I, on the other hand, have some theories of my own, of course they are slanted towards Yale so bear with me....
I think a number of the top schools had those pesky second look weekends and tried to out do one another. These are rumors of course but some one on another board posted this long thing about how they were wined and dined and promised early exposure and rotations/research abroad and I think people simply can't make up their mind between all the great things these schools offer.
Ahh...just theories though...maybe its a little bit of everything, eh?

Yeah, I'm curious why this year seems so different, even according to all the admissions offices. My own little theory is that as we all have heard, the actual number of applicants has been going down each year since '96 or so, but the quality is going up. At the same time, I think the ave. number of schools that people are applying to has been going up. So maybe there are just a lot more people who are getting multiple acceptances??

I do think that AAMC and the schools themselves need to get tougher on some of these "suggested" deadlines and make them actual deadlines instead. Rather than the massive movement expected for late May/early June, it seems like a lot of schools are not expecting to see any significant movement until July!!
