FYI -- Classes at Duke start on Monday, August 13th, but orientation is the week before on August 8th - 10th. I had given up hope of being pulled off their waitlist, but they gave me a call at the end of June. So don't lose hope just yet, there's still a few more weeks of waiting. Yippee! (read sarcasm)

Has anyone heard from UCLA/Drew program recently? Acceptance/rejections. 😕

To give you guys some hope -- a couple of years ago, a friend of mine had been waitlisted at his top-choice school, and hadn't heard anything from them. He was already in another med school, and as it got into August, he ended up going to his school's orientation. However, when he got home from the first day of orientation, he received a call from his first-choice school that he was accepted and that he could start their orientation in 2 weeks! Needless to say, he was ecstatic, and was able to convince the people at his lower-choice school to allow him to leave! (and I think the school he left was able to get a replacement for him as well...) So miracles do happen! 🙂

Best wishes to all the waitlisted folks--I'm thinking of you!

Allison: That is so exciting! I was accepted to Rochester off the waitlist a month ago, so we'll be classmates. Also, I'm moving to Rochester from Seattle, so I know the overwhelming feeling you have! If you have any questions about apartment hunting or whatever, feel free to send me a private message. (I was just there last weekend and have some numbers of landlords if you want them.) Anyway, Congratulations!

I had a question for people getting off waitlists: Do you have to decide whether to accept the offer and attend without knowing how much financial aid if any you will be receiving? What if you had already been accepted to a school, do they give you time to compare financial aid packages? I never got in off the schools that I was waitlisted at but I wondered about it. Congrats to those who have been getting off the waitlists, good luck to those still waiting.

hi, ckent. i, in contrast to lilycat, did have time to compare financial aid packages, and made it clear to the school that made me the offer that my decision was based solely on financial aid. it probably depends on the school, as well as your personal stance, but if you have you paperwork done ahead of time, and let them know that the decision hinges on financial aid, they may be willing to run the numbers and give that info. so that you can make a decision. it seems rather draconian for them to deny you this option, but if it means waiting weeks, esp if it's because the applicant hasn't submitted necessary paperwork, then i guess i can see why they push you to move faster. i think the moral is to have all forms in to fin aid offices for waitlist schools that you like before an offer comes to you.

SDN People,

I got into the Tufts MD/MPH program today (about 30 minutes ago)!

Words can't express my excitement. It also means a spot will be opening up at Meharry, I hope this makes someone as happy as I am right now!

nmehta,

congrats on getting in tufts. i guess you don't need housing in nashville anymore. 🙂
considering that meharry starts registration on the 30th, i am sure that someone will be happy. it seems stupid that people are just finding out where they'll be next year at this time of year. someone needs to reform this application system.

Peter

Congrats nmehta! 😀 I have been following this thread for a while and I know how much you wanted Tufts.

Thanks to all,

Of course I will be praying for everyone to get what they wish, remember that for most schools, there is still plenty of time. Orientation is 3 weeks away at Meharry and now they have an open spot.

As for anything special that I may have done, well, I basically kept Tufts aware about how much I wanted to go. I wrote letters stating what I was doing this summer (work related) and kept reminding them that I guaranteed i would matriculate if I was accepted.

Also, now is the time to pull all the strings you may have. If you have people who wrote letters for you who are either on the committee or who are faculty at the school, state your wishes, and I am sure they will go to bat for you. Two people did for me, and it paid off.

Best wishes to everyone! And if you are in the CT area this weekend, drop me a line...drinks on me!

Hey Neel,
Congratulations ! 😀 Good things happen to good and positive people like yourself. I called their admissions office two days ago and had a chance to speak to the Director. It was fumbling a bit though because I was expecting an answering machine, but he's a nice guy.

Today I found out I got accepted by SUNY Downstate 😀. My father received the call and I'm anxiously waiting for the hard copy, but I'm really psyched! Best of luck to all of you waiting. I actually called Downstate the day earlier but didn't get beyond the secretary, but who knows it may have helped. Good luck 🙂!

Guardian,

CONGRATS TO YOU TOO!!!!!!

Are you definitely going to SUNY Downstate or are you still waiting for an offer from Tufts? They seem like they still are working on their waitlist.

Anyways, this seems to be a great weekend for SDN! I raise my glass...may all the hopes and dreams of the class of 2005 come true!!!

Cheers,
Neel

(man, that was a lot of exclamation points, guess I am still excited!)

Neel,
I'm still waiting for the hard copy from Downstate in my hand, undeniably stating that I've been accepted 😉. If I got an acceptance from Tufts, I'd be put in a tough position. Not nearly as tough as my position three days ago but you know what I mean. The upcoming weeks have the potential to be real crazy. 😱
Good luck to everyone still waiting. Looking forward to hearing more great news 🙂.

congrats Neel! looks like we'll be classmates; I am also doing MD/MPH at Tufts after getting in off the waitlist. cheers!

Katie: I replied to your other post regarding housing, but I am glad that we will be classmates. Congrats and see you soon!

Guardian: I am in teh same boat, waiting for official documents, but I guess I will be naive and assume I am in, they called my house, my cell, and left me an email...now for that god awful Boston rent.

Neel

Hey guys,
😀 A few hours ago, I just got a call today from my mother telling me that I got accepted by Tufts! 😎 I think I'm on cloud 9! Two acceptances within five days only a few weeks before classes is too much for me to handle 😉. Now I'm going to have to write up alot of threads on this board 😉 and call up alot of people in making my decision between Tufts and Downstate. Neel and Katy, I may have to borrow lecture notes from you guys in the future j/k . 😀

guardian,

i had a feeling that you would get in tufts. 🙂 it seems like once you get one, the flood gates open. congrats again.

Peter

Guardian,

Congrats! I'm really glad that all this waiting was worth it for you in the end. As for me, I'm losing all hope of starting school next week. I'm sorry that I waited all this time for NYMC. 🙁

Good luck at Tufts!

Guardian,

CONGRATS!!! Man, i knew it was coming. Waitor, champagne for that future doc!

<Best Salesman voice>:Now, doc, what am I gonna have to do to get you to accept Tufts today?

Anyone hear anything from UCLA in the last couple days? I am on the edge of my seat.....

I just got in UCLA off the WL 2 weeks ago. If you have another acceptance, I would call them and let them know that you need to know your status immediately and that you have to commit to another school very soon. I did that and I got a letter dated the next day. Good luck.

Thanks guys 🙂!

CityIvy and PeterY, you definitely deserve another chance! If not this year I think you would have a great shot next year. Looking forward to hearing good news 🙂.

Hello people...I just found this website...pretty cool.

I'm happy to say that I finally got off a waitlist. On Monday afternoon, I received a message on my answering machine from the director of admissions at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She said there was an issue regarding my application, and that I should call her back ASAP.

I called her early the next morning and asked her what was goin' on. She asked me if I had any idea why she was calling, and I told her that I had absolutely no idea (I really didn't...I just turned in my primary application for Fall 2002 (I'd given up on an acceptance a long time ago). She then told me that she wanted to offer me admission to MCW.

I was STOKED!

However, I'm not the type of person that could move all the way from California to Milwaukee in approximately 3 weeks and so I was afraid I would have to turn it down...I currently have a great job, and I promised my employers a one-year committment.

However, knowing my luck with applying to medical school (10 interviews in the past two years...and just this one lone acceptance from MCW), I asked if I could defer until August 2002. Under normal circumstances, almost no school would grant deferred admission this late in the application cycle (and so close to orientation). This year, however, is different all thanks to this year's new web-based AMCAS. Due to the problems of this godforsaken application (which has pushed the admissions process for all AMCAS schools several weeks behind), med schools wanna make sure they had some first year med students in Fall 2002 just in case the new AMCAS totally blows up in their faces.

Thus, if there is anyone out there that is in a position similar to mine (i.e. - accepted with only a few weeks/days to go, and you're not the type of person that could make such a move in such a short span of time), it never hurts to ask for deferred admission.

Good luck everyone...and congrats to all of you waitlisted folk that made it to the promised land. We did it!

So here is my story. I have been suffering from insomnia this whole week worrying about this Medical School ordeal. My MCAT scores expire this year so I would have to retake in April and wait two more years before I can get into medical school. I was banking on NYMC, because they usually offer admissions to 1/3 of their waitlist, but this year there has been no movement. They will start orientation on monday. 🙁

Anyway after this whole waitlist fiasco I got home yesterday from the lab and got a message on the machine from Dr. Unkis, Dean of Admissions at Temple University, asking me to call back. I called back this morning and was informed by the Admissions Office that I was offered an acceptance, which I of course took. 🙂 So things are all good now. Temple doesn't start orientation until August 29 so I'll have sometime to find housing, get my physicial, and make the trek from SoCal to Philly. I am pretty happy right now, and extremely relieved.

Best of luck to everyone else waiting out there!

Peter

ps-so now the search begins for a roommate...

WOW Thats awesome Peter. Congratulations. You remained positive through this whole ordeal and you deserve the acceptance. 🙂

Congratulations Peter! Way to go!

PeterY,

Congrats. To everyone else, let this be a message of hope that it can work out for everyone!

Just thought I would revive this thread for all those who are interested. I know a lot of people are getting annoyed with waitlist news right now, but if you read through some of the posts on this thread, you will see that A LOT of the applicants last year had extremely good luck at getting into their top choices or getting their first acceptances in the summer months, myself included. Good luck applicants!

I got more waitlists than I can count, and to me they're as good as lotto tickets - but hey, you never know <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

I'm on six waitlists and counting. Ugh. 🙁

Here's to hoping and praying for Penn! 🙂

hey since this is last year's wait list thread, do you guys think we should post on jalbrekt's wait list thread instead? I think if this one gets any longer it'll be a mess to keep track of how we are doing in this cycle. What d'ya think?

This is last year's waitlist thread

Thought I would bump it for some fun reading. 🙂
