Come on, you know you're all doing it. Few extra crunches, few extra curls at the gym. RUnning an extra mile...

Personally I don't think hypertrophy works in my body but hey maybe some of you won't be getting your love handles manipulated.

We should all plump up for the OMM lab. America is an overweight country and our busting waist lines will serve our classmates better. We can't get used to working on just fit individuals, we might as well have a proper representation of the body types that we will encounter in the real world.. 🙄

I feel sorry for my classmate who has to OMM me. I'm not going to change.

Haha this never occurred to me.

I know you were half joking but it is a good point. Obviously no need to actively plump up for lab, but it is highly encouraged to work on multiple body types in lab and not always choose the thin female because you can visibly count her ribs through her skin. It is good to work on larger individuals, and not just those with more body fat, but even lean, real muscular guys can be a change trying palpate through a lot of muscle.

It's not only the extra weight that I'm conscious of, but also that I tend to get small red breakouts on my upper back (though my face is very clear). In in my late 20s now, so this isn't a teenage acne problem... but I don't know how to clear up the skin on my back. 🙁 (sigh)

Yeah, body weight is another issue - I'd like to take off 30 pounds before school starts. I don't know if it's still possible now. Maybe I'd be helping my classmates being this way, but I'd rather not be the person in OMM lab in my sports bra who is immortalized on school marketing materials for the next several years. I'd also prefer not having to be the 'fat person' example when the professor tells people they need to learn to manipulate other types of bodies for practice. Then everyone will start coming over to me.

Ah well, what will be... will be. I'll try not to stress over it too much. I think the majority of us have some body hangups.

Salicylic acid skin cleanser in the shower every day. If it gets too dry cut down to every other day.

I have the same issue with trouble skin on my back. I use a bit of toner after the shower and try to use dye/perfume free detergents when washing clothes. I used to love the smell of tide but realized it was only exacerbating my problem. also, being in the sun helps as well. good thing i'm going to AZCOM next year then..lol.

hahahah best thread of the day.
and yes, i aim to be at the gym at least twice a week this summer... which is a pretty high goal considering i haven't been to a gym yet this whole year 🙁

I'm not too happy with my physique, but I'm trying...damn love handles...

It boggles my mind that I have never met a "large" med student; every male looks slim, as if they've been working out for OMM lab since they were young. Is there some correlation I'm missing?!

I started training in high school for OMM lab. Each morning at 5 AM I would put on my sweats and drink three raw eggs and quietly slip out the door. After running 6-7 miles, I would stop by the local meat packing plant and box some raw meat hanging from hooks. The local workers would supply me with all the meat I could ask for. By 7 AM I would...please tell me you are not still reading this.

lol this thread is awesome.

lol this thread is awesome.

Why would we stop reading??? You finished before you described running up the steps and throwing your hands up in victory???

I've met a few, but they're definitely the minority.

I was just thrilled when I got my D.O. admissions this year after previously getting rejected...then the horror of OMM lab set in. I am so self conscious about my thighs and flabby upper arms...something I never saw on many other interviewees.

No kidding, not having to worry about wearing a tank top, shorts, or sports bra (depending on the D.O. school) in front of my classmates was one of the most significant pros of getting into an M.D. school!

Oh yeah? Well I have a short jewish irish guy yelling at me and making me chase chickens.

I'm kind of fat and have been since puberty. Nothin' I can do to fight it.

It boggles my mind that I've met so many!! And not only because of OMM lab, but COME ON--we're trying to be doctors here. Shouldn't we practice what we preach! I don't know how many of you ever read FMylife.com, but you should b/c it's HILARIOUS. Anyway, last week some time I read one that said something to the effect of "Today I was examining an extremely overweight patient (I am a pediatrician) and I was explaining to her the importance of eating healthy foods and exercising every day when she turned to her mother and said 'But Mommy, the Doctor's fat too!' FML."

As important as it is to get "real experience" since we'll certainly see some fatties in our day, we shouldn't invite responses like the one this child gave.

Your sensitivity boggles my mind. I guess I would describe myself as 'chubby' and I plan on losing weight prior to med school for a variety of reasons. Fat just happens to be one of the most obvious bad habits, as we can't see our patients liver/lungs on just your standard office visit, but that doesn't mean that thin patients are the model of 'healthy living'.

What boggles my mind is all the docs/nurses I see smoking right outside the hospital.

Yea....I'll admit it, I'm at the gym 4 days a week getting ready for OMM. I'm already balding and in my 30's....so being a bit overweight is just one to many hits to my vanity. Plus, how can I tell my patients to live a better lifestyle when I am scarfing down double cheese burgers and sitting on my couch every night.

Same. I used to think it was mainly the techs, orderlys etc, until I really started to look at who was smoking out there. One night I was at a CVS and the best ER doc I had seen (thus far) at the place I worked was in front of me in line, bought two packs of marlboro lights and left. I was pretty shocked to say the least.

Yeah, I've had nurses come back from break obviously reeking of cigarrettes. Its really disappointing, think you'd want to set a better example than coming back into the ER smelling like Joe Camel.

I wouldn't consider myself sensitive about it-- just amused by the irony. My favorite doctor in the world is a DO OB-GYN and she is by all definitions a large woman. In no way does her size affect her ability to be an incredible doctor.

But here's a personal example: my mother is 5ft tall and weighs 138lbs. She is a very petite woman, and my friends always remark about how "tiny" and "cute" she is (that seems to be the word we use to describe small things...) Anyway, the respiratory specialist she went to for sleep apnea encouraged her to lose some weight. This doctor is borderline obese. Not saying he isn't right--it might just help her problem--just noticing the pot calling the kettle black.

do we absolutely HAVE to take our shirts off?? I am not comfortable doing that with a room full of students! I come from a very modest/conservative background

It just makes no sense either. Of all the people in the world, you should KNOW what those damn things can really do.

I predict this is how the first meeting of overweight DO students preparing for OMM will turn out:

haha yet your profile picture is of a man smoking!

Irony at it's finest. If you read up a little about Hunter S. Thompson though, you'll see that ciggies were by far the most tame thing he touched on any given day!!!

I think for most schools it was part of acceptance paper work you signed. I can appreciate your concern, I too come from a very conservative background. However, I think beyond the OMM, it's a good experience for future doctors to experience to a very small extent how anxious and uncomfortable it is for some people to take their clothes on in front of others.

As far as taking your shirt off, I'm not sure if you're male or female, but I know from the paperwork I read each school had slightly different requirements for the females. Might want to just check out your school policy.

You were being called "sensitive" sarcastically.

Do you need to get to med school to realize that weight isn't all that easy to lose for a lot of people even if you are highly motivated and a physician who "knows better?" I'm a slightly overweight soon-to-be med student. My dad is Class II obese, however...and I've fought off those genes viciously. I've also had heart surgery due to a congenital malformation, so I have limitations you wouldn't predict for my age. I would be 2 times my weight if I didn't work against it...Have you ever looked at those classmates who "boggle your mind" with their weight and thought about other factors that might be in play?...You clearly have a self-selective population here, so I all but guarantee that nobody in med school is fat w/out caring in some regard.

I invite you to step outside of your bubble. And I am glad your body has been kind to you.

I'm getting stronger, but I am doing so regardless of OMM and not because of it. I set a variety of goals in core lifts. (I don't want to say what they are because then only negativity flows out) I also began running hills again. I almost threw up today...showed that hill who is boss! 😛

I recently began a routine that should be sustainable during school. My previous workouts were creeping up in time and it was beginning to get ridiculous. If any of you guys (or gals) want to learn details of the 5/3/1 style workout then PM me. That in conjunction with intense cardio is going to get you in great shape and it is designed to be an in and out type workout. If I throw in conditioning it usually a little over an hour. Without the conditioning around 45 minutes. Getting great gains with it already.

👍 YEah lemme just say for the record I work out 4-5 times/week regularly, for a while now, not just because of OMM. Just thought the thread would be interesting. Post your plan, I think I've plateaued out in my weight training and could definitely use a change

Maybe 1-2 years ago I was doing all running and no weight training, up to six miles a day. Still, the worst thing I ever tried was HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training. ITs basically alternating sprint/jog every minute for 30 minutes. Man did that make my chest burn. It made me appreciate how easy a six mile run is.

Oh please, this is a lighthearted thread. If you'll notice from my earlier post, I used the collective pronoun "we" numerous times, as I in no way consider myself an exception to this insecurity. I have just as many body issues as any average American. As the post you chose to quote states: I find the irony of the situation amusing. That is all. Regardless of any reasoning behind a situation, it's still ironic to have overweight/smoking/alcoholic/"insert vice here" doctors instructing patients on how to be healthy.

You guys think that taking your shirt off is a big deal? Get ready for sacral/pelvic. 'Disappearing hand trick', anyone?

Believe me, you all will get real comfortable with your classmates very soon.

?? What are we going to be doing to/with our classmates?? 😕

I'll let you all figure that out on your own. DON'T get all worked up, it may really help those who are shy.

I made a joke on interview day about not making everyone else jealous with my sexy-ness during OMM lab...I don't think everyone thought I was joking lol. But yea, I'll be at the gym every day this summer.

Thanks Pietachok! My point exactly.

I love that site. 😀

This might be TMI, but I think there will definitely be myself and others opposed to giving up our virginity in OMM lab. I think we'll have to find out what our 'opt out' options are. (sigh) I think those few of us still waiting for our 'special someone' don't want that first-time experience to be a rude awakening while being graded on it with our classmates. Heh, talk about 'performance' anxiety. (!)

Ok, yeah, this is really 'too much information', but I think if some of us are really that uncomfortable... then we'll probably have to speak with someone about what our options are.

You just made this thread very serious. I don't understand; what are you expecting to happen during OMM lab? This isn't torture; we're just learning. Nothing horrible will happen to you (nor any virginity), I'm sure. Any body parts exposed is only for the purpose of a learning experience, to allow us to have more exposure to bodies that we'll be working on for the rest of our lives. That said, I haven't heard of anyone getting naked...

But this just makes me curious. How well ARE we going to "know" our classmates?...

I agree that this is a lighthearted thread, the only reason I commented on your post was that you used the word fatties, which pretty much only has negative connotations and not the kind of support that we all should show anyone who wants to lose weight/gain muscle/get healthier.

Sorry, I was being serious with my last post, but also attempting to write it in a facetious way, as I find humor in stuff like that. I just got the idea from Rddoms that we might end up having to do some sort of rectal or gynecological exams on one another - at least that's what I thought he/she was implying. I am also curious about how well we'll be getting to "know" our classmates. I am mature enough to handle it if need be - as obviously this is training for our careers as physicians. I just find it awkward that we might be doing this stuff on one another rather than on patients.... as it might be a bit too 'personal' for some of us who haven't done this sort of thing even in adult relationships. I can totally conduct myself professionally with patients, but with classmates it would feel different. I'd rather think of my classmates as future colleagues rather than remembering the times in class we stuck our hands up each other's bums... if you know what I mean. Of course it's a serious issue, but awkwardly funny too.

I thought that we had paid actors for gyn or rectal exams not each other?

:banana:Man how did my thread get so serious?

Whenever you gotta give a rectal exam, just think of this:

I seriously doubt that's what rddoms was implying. I am almost positive that we would never do that to each other!

Besides, what does that have to do with OMM?

Hm, I thought it had to do with feeling the bones at the base of the spine or the pelvic bones. But I guess you are right, if we had to do this on one another, I'm sure more students would be talking about it. Now I really want Rddoms to clarify his/her statement!
