Interesting - it appears that programs are downloading USMLE transcripts first and then the rest of the applciation.

so, either they are downloading the USMLE scores to use as a first screen....or....for some reason the USMLE trnascript happens to get downloaded first...

Unless things have changed this year, it's an all or nothing prospect on the program's end. We can't download specific parts of the apps to screen from.

There are no tea leaves here, stop trying to read them.

Good catch. I don't think they're screening. It looks like for all the programs that have downloaded my app, the USMLE transcript is first. But I'm sure for some programs, when they actually sit down and go through the apps, they will use it as a screen.

Unless they say "only 3 letters", 4 is fine. I "read" them all (in that, I have about 10 minutes tops to devote to each app I review, I'll probably spend 1-2 minutes of that total skimming LORs).

Thanks!

We can't screen unless we download first.

Anyone ever get their letter rejected from a digital signature?

Hi everyone, I am getting very anxious, all my letters are ready except one from my outside rotation. I have been contacting them a lot but the attending who is responsible to write the letter never answered me back! What should I do?seems most of people have already applied. If I don't apply early, will my chances of getting interview decline?

Apply now, submit the last LOR if/when it comes.

Do you think it's a good idea to call and/or email the programs to give them an update that our last LORs arrived and were submitted?

Thats all I got for now. Anyone else notice any?

Thanks Gutonc! Finally I was able to talk to my last letter writer, he wrote the letter today and submitted it. Do you think I wait until it is available in myeras and then apply or apply now. I am afraid things get mixed up if I send the letters separately.

I think consensus states that it is likely better to apply now and add letters as they show up in EFDO

Does anyone know where should I list my publication which is listed in Pubmed as: [Epub ahead of print]? should I list it as a peer reviewed journal article (other than published) or as a peer reviewed online publication?

You can put in as peer reviewed published article/abstract as it is published and can be accessed now.

I do not think I can put in as published because it needs to fill the volume, issue number and pages which we do not know yet as it is [Epub ahead of print], any other ideas?

Can't you just enter "NA" in those sections? Honestly, they need to get over this and just have you put PMIDs in...but I digress.

1. I am applying a year late to be with move with my spouse for 1 year; in the meantime am doing research fellowship at a competitive california program with my own grant award. Does the delayed application make a difference?Next year I am flexible to move.
It makes a little bit of a difference because the assumption will be that you didn't match last year, had to do a year of research and now are re-applying. There is nothing you can do to change this perception but you should be aware that it exists. Also, while grants are nice and everything (they allow you to pay your rent and eat for instance), publications are the only currency in the research game. To paraphrase the internet, "pubs or it didn't happen."

2. Also from a program's standpoint for an IMG, is citizenship any different from being a permanent resident?

No. We don't care why we don't have to get a visa for you, just that we don't.

So quiet so far... hopefully in a week or two this all changes!

what's the most that one could possibly go on interview during their 3rd year of residency? and what type of questions should I be ready for?

Depends on how much time you have/can get off, and how geographically spread out the places are.

and what type of questions should I be ready for?
Same boring crap you dealt with in residency. Only with less touchy-feely medicine BS.

Thanks. What if it is clear from my personal statement and letters that this was a voluntary decision and that I did not apply last year?

Lok ok. That's just unfortunate then how people misinterpret things 🙂 Like you said nothing that I can control! At least I have my home program who knows it 🙂

is it normal to have programs not downloading any of your application materials 2-3 days after the ERAS opened? should I give them a week before following up with them? has anyone notice any problems with programs not being able to download? my home program coordinator told me that she hasn't been able to do anything for the past two days.

I've noticed the same. Quite a few programs have downloaded my application but there are a handful that haven't touched it. Still waiting. 😕

How can you tell on the website if your app was downloaded?

After you log into ERAS, click upper right corner "ADTS"

I don't think you all understand how much work this is for the programs. And bear in mind that just 2 weeks ago, these same PCs and PDs took on new fellows. At this point, they have (probably) completed the process of helping these new fellows find their own asses with both hands and might like a couple of days to breathe before diving back in to review hundreds of new applications.

So maybe just chill for a minute or two.

thanks, Gutonc!! we all should just close ERAS and take a vacation for 2 weeks.. hopefully, when we come back, there will be good news waiting for all of us. Is there any programs that offer pre-match that you know of, Gutonc?

First interview offer!! - Moffitt!! Dates in September

He's west saiide.. Florida's not =(

I wonder how Moffitt screen their applicants 'cuz I'm not sure if everyone have submitted their applications. I guess they send out invites when they see an applicant that they like regardless of how that applicant fares against the applicant pool this year.. Based on the info from Gutonc's program, his program doesn't event screen until August?? Can Moffitt offer pre-match if there's someone that they really like early on?

I can see why it's a deal breaker though

Zero IVs invites here too.

Just out of curiousity. If anyone knows or has an idea of the process, how do programs select 20 or so people out of 400+ applicants?

Do programs really look at all applicants that apply to the program? Seems like it would be very time consuming.

If they dont look at all 400+ applicants, is it luck of the draw if they even look at your application?

There seem to be competing forces here. Programs are very busy so how could they look at all applicants vs being fair to everyone that applies to the program.

It kind of blows my mind that after just a couple short years, people forget everything they knew about the Match. It works exactly the same way for fellowship that it does for residency. While the number of apps (and interviews and spots) may be fewer, so are the number of people available to review the apps. A medium-sized IM program may have 3-5 people primarily reviewing apps but a medium-sized fellowship program probably has only one, maybe 2 people to do the job. So, just like in the residency match, fellowships rely on filters to cut the number down to a decent size. After that, they'll often do a quick once-over of the remaining apps to thin the herd again, followed by a more extensive review of the apps. So now, where it started out at 400 apps for 4 spots, the filters have narrowed it down to 200 and the brief eval brought it down to 100 which is a reasonable number to closely review for the 30-40 interview spots you have for those 4 spots.

Also do middle tier and top programs both invite the academic all stars for interviews? From a logistical perspective wouldnt it be more efficient if top programs invited top applicants and mid tier programs interviewd mid tier applicants.

what do you guys think? Should mid tier programs not interview academic all stars for an interview since they will likely go to a top program?

So, first of all, programs can do whatever they want within the bounds of employment law and the Match agreement. There's no moral or legal imperative for programs to accept (or reject) any particular "tier" of candidate. You can't predict the choices any particular applicant will make and the goal of a program is to get the best fellows to come there.

That said, I was at a mid-tier program (and interviewed at both higher and lower tier programs than the one I matched at) and we would routinely interview a handful (10-20% of interview spots) superstar candidates, usually those with connections to the area or the institution. The rest of the spots were split between solid mid-tier folks (the majority, let's say 50-80%) and a few stragglers on the south end of the stats game, again, usually with some sort of connection to the area or program.

Hi guys, does anyone have the hem/onc programs requirements list? thanks

You'll have to find it yourself on each program's website.
lol. not all programs have their websites updated, you know? some still have the Dec cycle time-lines. But Gutonc has discussed this topic many times over.. you have to look at some old posts.
