Official 2013-2014 Heme/Onc fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am willing to consider programs doing any VISA - J1/H1, although I should have GC by Sep end. Fingers crossed.
You should at least notify all 58 programs by emails regarding your current visa status. who knows? it might help!

Same here... IMG/J1, USMLE 99/99, CMR, 20 pubs= NO interviews 🙁
I hear your pain but it's still way too early (Gutonc would tell you 😍). Do you have any grant from your country to pursue a fellowship here? If you do, then your chance will be much better.. Regardless, there are more programs that accept J1 Visa than H1. If any IMG/J1 would get in, it would be you. Keep your hope up!

You have EAD right? so technically you don't need visa and programs should realize that. I agree with telling the programs. I was in the same situation during residency (but closer to the match rather than during the interview process) and I at least let my top 3 programs know that.

Good luck buddy, lets sit back and see how it goes...

Same here.
IMG/H1: willing to take J1 for fellowship /decent USMLE scores/ 10+ pubs/basic and clinical research exp/LOR from renowned oncologist = no interviews
Will have to wait and see!

first interview at Orlando Health/MD Anderson Orlando. Happy to have one finally. 🙂

My inbox is empty so far, not even aknowledgement emails!

Closer to A....
Does it matter? Because now I'm going to start over-thinking the whole process. :O
i'm not sure.. but it does give me hope since i'm closer to Z. GutOnc never did confirm if they review the applications by alphabetical order after programs are done with the initial screening. 🙂

😀 yes i am. sad that didn't get it from Moffitt. but at least something before the month ends.
i'm begining to see a trend here.. I believe what Gutonc said about the regional preference is true.

The program coordinator from my home program told me that they divvy up what they got on the first download and dig in and do the same each time they download, which is about once a week. Didn't mention anything about alphabetical order.

if GutOnc get 2cents for every time we quote him here in the forum, he would be famous and rich academically. He can write his own ticket to any place in the USA.😍

well, that doesn't sound good for those of us who submitted our applications on the first day.. it will be very depressing to assume that if we didn't get the invites from those instituttions that already sent out their invites then we're doomed??.. :scared:

I think there definitely are some regional tendicies.

But not sure if it applies to Moffitt bc I am more west than east.

I have decided to just let it all go and stop analyzing because none of it really makes sense to me. Why you click with one program and get the interview and may not get an interview at the same caliber program located somewhere else just seems impossible to understand.

Congrats to everyone with new interviews!

This process feels so much more intense than residency apps ever was hahaha. Am I the only one that is thinking this LOL?

The only places that sent out emails I received was Emory and UW.

So I think you are fine! The PD I know says its still very early and most places will start reviewing the first week of August.

lol. you are not the only one.. the whole application process for fellowship seems a little bit slower..

Yeah maybe we will run into each other ! Its 309-400 when I checked even for the earlier dates-- did you check both kayak and southwest sites? I am not sure if jetblue goes there!
it might be cheaper to fly into Dallas. It's about 2 hours drive instead of 1&1/2 from Austin.

Congrats 🙂 Let's Keep The Ball Rolling.

BIDMC 7/24 Interviews Aug To Nov. Call To Schedule.

Columbia 7/24 Interviews September/October. Call To Schedule As Well.

Hemdoc - You're a superstar since get all of the early interviews available. Perhaps, having your own grant money might have a thing or two to do with it, eh? Congrats!

Congrats on the amazing interviews. Do you mind sharing what kind of creds you have?

Multiple Heme/Onc people told me that I'd be a competitive candidate but it doesn't look like it as I don't have any of the big names like you do so I would love to know what I am missing.

Thanks so much!

Please stop asking people for their credentials!! 🙄

Dude chill I wasn't trying to be offensive. People have been posting this on the other threads for other specialties (cards, gi, etc) to help people get an idea of what programs are looking for in candidates they interview.

I didn't think the heme/onc forum would be any different ... anyways sorry if you found it offensive.

People can post their creds if they wish to do so. I have no problems posting, but asking for the creds of someone else is not a mature thing to do IMHO! Besides, it is way to early to freak out about things so, perhaps you need some chilling too! 😉😀

If every other forum has no problem with asking I don't see why you do but whatever we can agree to disagree.

I didn't say I didn't need to be less stressed either. If you look at my earlier posts I fully recognize I'm anxious about this whole process.

I have wanted to go into heme/onc since probably middle school so the amount of preparing that has gone in for this final process has been a long time coming for me.

So the level of stress is higher probably for me than most because I can't imagine doing anything else and feel my purpose is to do heme/onc through some very personal experiences since I was young.

Hope you have a good weekend buddy.

Not asking you to you understand me but don't judge me when you don't have a clear picture of me by just asking for someone's accomplishments.

Let us be kind to each other. Understandably the vast majority of candidates have not yet gotten interview offers with the exception of most eminently qualified. That been said, a few things to help assuage nerves:

1) There are only so many "superstars" and in the end they take up only 1 spot each for fellowship. Furthermore, the majority of candidates only go on about 10 interviews for a number of reasons, so there will be interview spots left for the majority of candidates.
2) Reviewing last year's thread, it would appear that the majority of interview offers will be offered between August 1 and the end of August.

Hope this helps and wish all of you the best. Cheers

One final thing... echoing what GutOnc has stated previous, just because invites have been sent from one program does not necessarily mean that they are done reviewing applications and sending invites. Case in point - BIDMC. Again hang in there, and irrespective of how things turn out, you are all great doctors. Peace.

Don't take this as a personal attack, which it is not! I am simply expressing a view because people might not feel comfortable disclosing their personal info, which creds can be, on a public forum.

Like you, I went to med school with cancer treatment as my goal for very personal reasons. There are bound to be many more with similar stories. It is still too early in the game. If you are an AMG, there will be enough positions for almost all of us, as long as we didn't suck in med school and/or residency!

Hi. well said doctor779. If I was in the place, i'd give you whatever position you wanted! That being said, this thread should be useful - and lately its not.

For IMG like myself, the rule of thumb for matching in IM was 100 applications and 10 interviews to land a spot. Can any fellows provide a recent stat on matching to a Hem/Onc fellowship? Many thanks!

Seems like we have no activity going on in heme/onc. PCCM thread is owning us! Time for our programs to wakey wakey.

But what about NYC? And did buffalo univer. Start sending interviews.

Nothing from NYC outside of columbia yet that we are aware.. MD PhD not getting interviews?
