Official 2014-2015 Pulm/CCM Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's gotten quiet 🙁
Maybe the first wave gave the big fish interviews. I am waiting for the second wave. A lot of people said that their programs haven't even started reviewing applications and they can go with interviews if needed till the first week of November... Wow!:nailbiting:

We can hope!

Ok, so I called one of the big fish today (my first desperate call :l ), and the coordinator said that though they had sent out a first set of invites, they were still reviewing apps. I received two interviews about 2 weeks after ppl on the forum first reported it. So yes, at least some programs send out invites in waves if not most.

:blackeye::blackeye:Rejections hurt. Especially when u get them from a program u thought u were right for.

Meanwhile one of ur reach programs gives u an invite.

But all u think about is the damn rejection because u know the reach program and u are prob not gonna work out.

Damn it.

After a quiet and kinda disappointing week for many... A quick review of the list shows that there are about 50 programs that have not yet sent out the first wave of interviews! Not to mention potential second round invites... So there still is plenty of hope for more calls guys!

On a different note... was looking into the Pulm 2 yr program at Norwalk, CT... their fellows are guaranteed a spot in CCM at Yale after the Pulm fellowship... almost makes me want to rank it higher than a medium size university program, just to get the opportunity to do CCM at Yale... Is that a completely brainless thing to do?

It's not brainless as long as you're not committing to the full two year CCM fellowship and will only be doing the one additional ABIM required year. Otherwise I think doing four more years when you can only do three is a bad idea.

yale does not have a critical care program unless it is off record for the norwalk fellows . Did you get an interview from that program ?

I'll be applying next year. I've looked through NRMP's results about the matching statistics for pulm/ccm (that PDF that has average USMLE scores, number of research projects, etc.) and there can be a lot of things that can left for interpretation. How do you guys/gals feel about how important research is in getting interviews this year? I'm hoping to go into an academic program. I quite confident the IM program I'm at won't be my bottleneck by any means. Are the people getting the interviews pretty research heavy? That's more or less the only thing I'm worried about (for now): presented posters at two national conferences in PGY-1 (both case, reports, not ATS or Chest), have a third one coming up in October (research, at ID Week), submitted another abstract for the AMA research symposium (also research, +/- a manuscript), will be submitting a research abstract to ATS this year (and hopefully getting accepted, +/- manuscript). First author on everything.

It is possible I'm freaking out too early.

Demonstrating research chops will be important to getting interviews at research heavy spots.

That's kind of how Yale rolls though. They do the same with Heme. Go ahead...do a 2 year Heme fellowship...want to add a little Onc to that action (so you can actually get a job when you finish)? Oh yeah...you can do it, no problem...just 2 short years and we can totally hook you up. Want to do some research too? Hellz yeah...just one more year and you're golden.

It's the Yale way.

I hope that doesn't translate to "I'm screwed unless I'm involved with a randomized controlled trial."

I've been kind of a lurker here... Has anyone heard from Geisinger? I sent the answers but never heard back from them... to add to the list of interviews...
+Texas Tech

season is so slow. My eras inbox is begging for some activity !

Season slow or most invites r done? Dont think we heard from many programs in the south yet? Arizona/Texas/Florida/South Carolina/Georgia/Tennessee seem to be slowwwwww...any one heard from Texas programs?

I got invitations from Texas A&M and East Tennessee State Uni in first week of August. Emory rejected me around that time, too.

Albany, Missou and Lennox Hill IV offers late last week

Unfortunately, due to scheduling I've had to decline a couple. My program is rather unhelpful with letting me schedule interviews. Anyone else running into similar problems? I didn't think they'd bend over backwards, but I thought they'd be a little more accomadating. Especially since I thought it kinda looks good to interviewees when a program can say they match their residents who want to into fellowship

Has anyone heard from the Philly programs other than Einstein and UPenn? Temple, Jefferson, Drexel?

They haven't/hadn't until I pestered the program coord for dates to plan my travel.

"...Our initial review of your application file suggests that the likelihood of your ultimately matching into the UW program is low and, therefore, we are not able to offer you an interview...."

From university of Washington.

Maybe they should work on their people skills. I knew it was a reach to apply there, but damn. My other rejections have been a bit more respectful.

Wow, dude, that's pretty harsh from UW. Agree they need to change their wording, seems like a bit of bridge burning. You never know where you might get recruited as faculty one day!

Got an invite from Northwestern today 8/26

When PDs ask about research interests how detailed answers are we expected to give? Is it enough to give broad topics or are they expecting us to have a very focused specific topic in mind?

Interview so far. +Sunny ( pul /crit ). +Buffalo ( pulmonary critical care ). +Upmc ( critical care )
