I think what you're saying is reasonable. It's just that Matteo and Casa Loma are really nice guys, so it's hard to call them out. And to be perfectly honest, they're insanely smart peeps, so while you'd hope they'd be more selective, they've been extremely successful getting to this point and it's hard to rag to hard on them for whatever weird methods they choose to get **** done. But I esp. have to call out Casa Loma since he's applying to categorical and Med/peds and primary care programs, and based off his interviews seems to be the #1 ranked applicant to IM this year nationwide. I think maybe he should have figured out a more clear career path before getting to this point, but from how he talks on here, I'm betting he's humble enough to admit the same thing. But, as I said, I don't think any of them did it maliciously. They over-applied probably for the same reason many of us do--fear of the unknown/anxiety, etc. It says as much about the system as it does the applicants. There's a lot of IMG heavy threads online, too, and if you don't realize it, you could read convos about guys having 260's and getting immediate rejections from half their schools (b/c they're IMG). This can add to the anxiety and make you add 50 more programs or something. A lot has been discussed on how to stop the applications from getting out of control (which clearly they have). But it is what it is. I think hindsight, both of those guys probably know they overdid it. But it's not like we have a lot of practice with this. Medical school applications have a lower return rate than IM residency applications, I'd guess, so we have been primed by that increasingly random environment as well. If they actually go on all those interviews, then I'll start to question their integrity. COPD exacerbation in California is the same as it is in New York, this isn't choosing a spouse. There's only so much you need to see. Again, my money, based on all of their positive interactions thus far, is that they'll basically agree with what we're saying.
BTW - Stanford (rejected just now..."DAMN YOU CASA LOMA" <-- that will be my new saying everytime something goes wrong in my life
I definitely understand where y'all are coming from and the frustration that's been expressed, all really legitimate. I want to apologize for just kind of gung-ho posting everything and not being as sensitive as I could have been. I have found SDN to be incredibly useful in the past for applying to med school as well as applying to residency, and have benefited greatly from past years' interview and match threads, so I thought I would share as much information as I could with people in an effort to make this crazy process a little more transparent. I've enjoyed the warm feelz of this thread in particular, and maybe got a little caught up in the sense of community that was growing.
With regards to categorical/primary care/med-peds, I've applied with very specific career goals in mind (primary care for adults or adults + kids appeals equally to me), and feel that both specialties fit my primary care + more specific career goals very well. With that said, I totally and absolutely over-applied, and have already declined a couple of invites. I was also planning on declining/withdrawing from the rest tomorrow, to leave myself with 15-16 interviews. The over-application was entirely because I too had very little idea about my competitiveness, and am frankly really darn surprised at how this has all turned out.
And, for what it's worth, I also got rejected from Stanford today
