This time last year (July 29,2016) this thread had 356 posts and was on page 9. My post tonight is #266 (July 29,2017) and we are still on page six as I write this.

It's only a simple observation, but perhaps interest/competition for dental school is less this year than last year. We are running behind last years post count by nearly a third and that seems to be a significant amount to me. Any number of arbitary reasons could be the cause for this, but the fact remains that last years thread count was significantly higher at this point in the process.

While the number of applicants probably remains relatively constant from year to year - it will fluctuate. There are going to be larger applicant and lower applicant pools from year to year - in regard to the # of applicants and in regard to the quality of applicants. This could be an off year for dental school which could bode well for every applicant. Another possibility is that SDN attracts a high % of high achievers and the post count might suggest there are less of them this year - which would also bode well not only for the highly qualified candidates on this board, but for the marginal candidate as well. Again this is a simple observation - but it may have some degree of merit. If you are anxious perhaps my musings may provide you with a small measure of solace as we wait.

I'm not sure how reliable your observation is, but it sure is an interesting observation. It could also be that there were more side conversations going than there are right now, but for my sake... I hope that there is less competition (LOL).

He's right though. Even on school specific threads there are far fewer posters than the previous year(s). I'm not saying it means anything, but it's an observation nonetheless

It could also be due to this new AADSAS format.

Nah I'm with @predentalstudent132... this is such overanalyzing it's genuinely nuts (coming from an unabashedly self-admitted anxious person).
But let's over-analyze even more if that's what we're into: he said last year they were on page 9. Two years ago they were on pg 8. Out of 105. 105 f***n pages overall. We're scientists, right, so let's do some analysis.
1) percent change from 2016 cycle to 2018 cycle: (6-8)/8 * 100= 25% change in pages since last year at this exact moment. Big number. But is that statistically significant? Lol not at all, because the sample size is far too small to make an accurate comparison. Sorry to be math-y but that's the truth
2) never understood percent change? Reread above statement and remember that this was page 8. Out of ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE PAGES. TOTAL. 8/105= .076%. Plus or minus TWO from ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE is absolutely laughable.
3) AADSAS is using a completely new format of apps that is unprecedented to the previous timelines. Aka, not an accurate comparison to any past years at all. Are schools getting far more apps because of it and can't handle it? Are schools getting less applicants because that's just how this year is going? Possibly to both, but *literally* impossible to say from outside the admissions committees
4) count in the possibility that last year possibly had more "talkative" members. You scroll through last year and the year before and you see dozens of people who you still see active today. On our class there's maybe < 10 people who post regularly/try to make active conversation. Likely even more who individually get info from schools but just don't post because they're shy/modest/not sure what's constructive.
5) I'm not one to preach, since I've already fallen victim to this, but the reality is: who tf cares what's happening outside of your inbox? Focus on your own app/job/health/betterment instead of overanalyzing past pages to find some new stat to work everyone else up with. Again, I'm not one to talk, I've already scoured through the possibilities of why one school didn't give me an interview when I thought I deserved one, but then just remember it's July. July. Over four months from the absolute earliest anyone ever could hear back. About 10 months from the latest we could hear back. So much time to worry through, so much time to space out your Anxieties

Sorry, I know this was long but that low key set me off. Over analyzing will just make you crazy with worry and theories. Is this cycle different than last cycle? Maybe, but impossible to gather from only two pages of a forum, so useless to use as an observation IMO

The response I got from UAB on 7/11 (6 days after submitting my application) regarding my application/their timeline, "There have been lots of issues with AADSAS and we are just now pulling applications. It could be weeks or even months before we contact everyone. Please note that we are not on a rolling basis." Seems like schools are simply adjusting to the new AADSAS format; some more efficiently than others.. no need to over analyze, just be patient!

my buddy got rejected too and they told him that they want gpa of at least 3.4 including bcp so maybe thats why, if you call they'll tell you, they offered him the 2 qtr masters program that leads to an acceptance when he called.

tons of clinical/volunteer experience.

What were your stats?

Lol. It could simply be that there were a lot more irrelevant posts. Post count ≠ interview posts. If you want to, you should go back and count up the number of interviews up to this date, and then the number of interviews on this thread up to this date.

Then, it would probably be good to take the average scores of everyone who had posted from last year and compare them to everyone who had posted from this year.

Then, if you still are worried, you should make a confidence interval of the mean and see if there is any statistical difference from the average scores of last year vs. this year.

My stats are similar to yours,

I thought my DAT scores could be my saving grace, but they said with my GPA I would have needed outstanding PS and LoR, neither of which quite hit the mark.

So happy that I was able to get a 20. Although TS is only 19, I believe that these are reasonable stats for mid/lower-level programs, correct?
