what are my chances of getting an interview with NOVA (mother went and sister currently going there)? haven't taken DAT yet ... but if I manage to get 20s across the board on it what are my chances? I know my stats are low but im wondering if i should take a gap year and make sure i get great DAT scores, do mission trips, shadow, etc or if i should bother applying this cycle ... (just graduated this week)

sGPA: 3.28
uGPA: 3.39 ( might take a couple courses to get this over 3.40 ?)

im not sure about how valid this is. But doesn't hurt to study hard (i mean really freak'n hard), take the DAT, and apply. worst case you get denied and you try again next year. if anything you show how willing/interested you are in becoming a dentist.

I don't think anyone on these forums will be able to answer this question. We don't know how much legacy matters at NOVA.

Based solely on your GPA, it's below average so the better you do on the DAT, the greater the likelihood you'll have (obviously).

i HAVE A 3.4s GPA AND 21 AA 22TS nothing under 19 ( dental assitant/ publication/orientation leader, etc) and i did not get an interview invitation yet from NOVA. so you better aims super high for that DAT 🙂

would you recommend that I do a masters program? or just focus on getting really good DAT scores. I dont have much experience in the field, i was planning on taking this a GAP yr to work with a few dentists, get better scores on the boards, and do some mission trips. But im considering doing a post bach program, what would you guys do ?

I hope you do for our sake, honestly NOVA is the only school i want to go to. did you apply early? does that kinda stuff even matter?

if i get denied would it look bad if i didn't do a masters/post bach program ? dont wanna apply now if itll hurt my chances the first time around, i wanna avoid doing an another program if possible but if i have to then so be it. or can i just take some extra science courses and get A's ?

I applied the first day of the application. To be honest, i can assure you i have good EC/ LOR and Decent DAT. But my 3.4 gpa is probably the turn off point for them, unless they will consider lower stats later on in the cycle. You can choose to do a master and get in NOVA for cheaper tuition in exchange for 2 extra years of master degree but its really up to you. I would call the school and ask them specific reason
. hope it helps

I don't want to derail this thread further, but I know at least 3 people got interviews at Nova this cycle with 2.8-3.2 GPAs. However, I think most of those people either did a masters or formal postbac program.

great info everyone. Il keep on researching what i do during this break, good luck to everyone! dont wanna get the thread off track >.<

have you already started your application? If not, even with a killer DAT, you're running a bit late in the cycle--especially considering it takes at least a few weeks to verify everything

Don't worry. Just focus on killing the DAT and you'll be fine. I understand that you want NOVA but you may be pleasantly surprised by some other schools. Take your time and be as prepared as possible for the DAT imo.

GUYSSSSS MY FIRST EVER INTERVIEW!!!

Interview #1

School: Nova
Notification date: 8/3/17
Method of notification: Email
Residency: TX
AADSAS mail-out date: 6/20/17
Application complete date: 7/27/17
Undergrad GPA (science, overall): 2.83, 2.53 (extenuating circumstances but extremely strong upward trend & finishing with all A's my last 3 semesters in upper level science classes)
SMP/Graduate GPA: 3.88
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 20/19/19/22/none

My stats are really untraditional so if anyone wants to message me feel free too. I was sincerely worried about whether I would even receive an interview but I think doing really well in a Masters program really helped me here! Also have 100+ shadowing hours, extracurriculars, and research!

Really ? that's great to hear, I honestly try so damn hard (for pretty crappy grades)... i want to take it before December using this Iprep dental course ive heard so much of. Also gotta take microbiology course during that time. Does applying early really help? especially for someone like me?
If you take it in decemeber I would not recommend applying this cycle.

yea, I think ive come to the decision. I'm going to just take a couple classes that are recommended on the NOVA site (immunology, histology, etc) and raise my GPA a little so its in the 3.4 range. Study super hard for the DAT with that prep course, and take it twice at least. Then just shadow, and do a mission trip and wait till the new cycle starts. wish me luck, wondering how many other people do this, hope taking a year off wont look bad since il be keeping busy

I don't think a year off will look bad a all since you're doing it to improve your application! Admissions will see that. Definitely apply early next cycle, I applied really late last cycle because I took the DAT late and I didn't get a single interview. I submitted by end of June this cycle and I got my first one today from Nova! You'll be fine just be proactive 🙂

Do school send out interview invitations without verifying transcripts? I submitted an application for VCU and received the receipt and paid the $85 fee. Will they wait to to decide after my transcript is verified or can they send a decision out before then?

well itd be nice if i only have to take it once but id hope my scores improve if i did need too lol

Go in with the mindset of taking it once. If you go in that way you are aiming to do terribly on the first time around. You'll kill it the first time. I would not worry.

Take this to PM or another thread. Stop derailing.

This time last year (July 29,2016) this thread had 356 posts and was on page 9. My post tonight is #266 (July 29,2017) and we are still on page six as I write this.

It's only a simple observation, but perhaps interest/competition for dental school is less this year than last year. We are running behind last years post count by nearly a third and that seems to be a significant amount to me. Any number of arbitary reasons could be the cause for this, but the fact remains that last years thread count was significantly higher at this point in the process.

While the number of applicants probably remains relatively constant from year to year - it will fluctuate. There are going to be larger applicant and lower applicant pools from year to year - in regard to the # of applicants and in regard to the quality of applicants. This could be an off year for dental school which could bode well for every applicant. Another possibility is that SDN attracts a high % of high achievers and the post count might suggest there are less of them this year - which would also bode well not only for the highly qualified candidates on this board, but for the marginal candidate as well. Again this is a simple observation - but it may have some degree of merit. If you are anxious perhaps my musings may provide you with a small measure of solace as we wait.
Maybe you are right becuase they are verifying transcripts faster than usual (I called to ask how long it would take)

they verified my transcripts in 3 days :soexcited:🙂 so it very well could be right!

Are there any Veterans on here who are applying? Wondering how being a Veteran works for tuition determination (IS or OOS).

I don't have a lot of shadowing a dentist, about 35 hrs (I'm gonna be shadowing more) but I have over 200 hrs working in a dental lab as an intern.
I'm the president of my schools predental club, went on an international mission trip, volunteer locally to help the addiction crisis... no research, I'm not too interested in it so I decided to not pretend that I was.

yea im still undecided lol, my mom keeps telling me to apply this cycle cause you never know. My sGPA should go up to a 3.30 and uGPA to 3.41 in December. (not great i know) But if I manage to squeeze in the DAT in and get good scores I will give it a go. Like you said worst that can happen is il look dedicated.

Friendly advice: I know a lot of people who applied because parents suggested it and it's something our advisors warn us about. If you do apply that's great! But make sure it's because you want to apply this cycle and you feel ready.

I definitely want to apply this cycle, don't want to waste any time considering I just graduated. However, with my stats I feel il need to be more well rounded than most (DAT, etc). With that being said let's not derail this any further lol.

Good to know, thank you! Hopefully I'll be there too eventually....I have about 400 as a surgical assistant in an oral surgery office and another 50ish with general dentists volunteering at the local free clinic. Also an officer for the pre dental club. And I'm on the top 10 nationally ranked lacrosse team at my university...hoping that will help a little to explain why my GPA isn't as high as some others.

what dates did they provide to you for scheduling the interview?
Mine was just the 25th of Sept and they said if that date doesn't work that they'll work with us to find another date.
