Official 2018-2019 Cardiology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am looking at it from perspective of good quality procedures and building future towards intervention and structural. And also overall culture of the program and the hype about UTHealth being unhealthily crazy busy(healthy busy is fine); where it gets to your point of quality not just quantity. Others top on my list are UTSW, UT San Antonio and Aurora. Thanks

Really only way to know that is what the current fellows have said. I'd say go with your gut on this one, how things felt to you, etc. I have my personal opinions of the program based on talking with various folks familiar or connected to the program, but it's all subjective. I wouldn't completely dismiss that post you referenced, nor the responses (which was a bit odd to me), there's likely some shred of truth between the two.

I think univ of arizona, drexel, marshall, allegheny and maine med are really good programs. I have serious concerns about UT memphs. Their iv was very sketchy and asking people to tell them how they are going to rank the programs and how many ivs people have. Also no tour of the hospital and 3rd years still don’t have cath numbers. St ES has a busy program but no transplant, long shifts, no echo technicians on night call and you will live in the shadow of big programs where u will be referring ur complicated pts

No Tour of the hospital after flying and booking hotels sounds ridiculous.

UT Memphis was certainly sketch. PD has been interim for 2 years and will be retiring in the next year.

Hey guys, what credentials have you heard about applicants matching in H1B visa Interventional cardiology?

Is it actually possible? For a 260s/260s IMG? Or should I change from H1B to J1 if I really want interventional cardiology so hard?

Hey folks, can I get some help with ranking?

Miami, USF, Christiana, Syracuse, Buffalo, VCU, St E's, Drexel, Hawaii, Charleston WV, and Northwell Long Island

Thanks!!

Personally liked VCU a lot. Seems supportive and had all the subspecialties. Not sure abboa the rest.

Without a doubt I would say VCU is the strongest out of that list.

Depends on your goals. Montefiore, UVa, Gtown, Kansas, and Loyola stand out as the best "names" but they are pretty different programs.

VCU, Miami, Northwell prob strongest - all very strong clinical programs
Buffalo, USF, Christiana, Cuse, WVU next (YMMV on WVU, but the location is a tough draw) - all strong clinical programs but perhaps not the “name” draw
The rest after

I went through the IC application process as an AMG - I saw a mix of IMG applicants on the trail, as well as DO, and I’m not sure I can give you more details. You’ll have to look at what each place will accept

Anyone have any insights on the LA programs, particularly UCLA-Harbor and USC?

Guys, just do I have all my ducks in a row: the deadline for the rank list is Nov 14th right?

What do you guys think about the following

Temple vs Kansas U
Utah vs Loyola

No specific future plans. Goal is good well-rounded training

Good luck all

Interviewed at Loyola and Temple; can't speak to Kansas/Utah. Both felt very similar, mid-tier programs with everything to offer but nothing in particular stands out in those two programs. Overall, none of those programs are academically far from each other, so ultimately up to you where you want to live/go. All have good broad training. I personally prefer big cities, so Chicago/Philly stand out to me.

Thank you. I personally felt that Utah (and to some degree Loyola) acted like a higher tier program than Temple/Kansas. But you are right I think all offer well rounded training and can prepare you for whatever you want to do after.

anyone written to their top 3 or #1. whats the consensus on having letter writers call for you...

What are you specifically telling your #2 and #3 programs?
Nothing to #3, making a letter writer call the PD. For #2, I will reiterate that after interviewing everywhere , I feel the program would be a great fit and would love to train there. This is in part due to the PD there telling me that we should "update each other" once I finish interviewing in response to my thank you email.

Does it matter if one of your letter writers emails the PD of your #1 or is calling better?

Who knows how much any it matters but I'd think calling is a more personal and effective mode of communication when compared to email.

Strongest programs are UAB, UMD and VCU

Could use some help ranking these programs

University of Colorado
Ohio State
UPMC
Wash U
Vanderbilt
Michigan

All good programs. Can't go wrong with any of them. Michigan/WashU/Vanderbilt > UPMC/Colorado/Ohio imo but I would go with your gut instinct and mentors who you'd like to work with when ranking.
