Official 2018-2019 Endocrinology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they have , i think, 2 fellows/year so probably only interview 20 people at the most total. They may have only given you one date, but interviewing on other days.

Thank you! I had a feeling that may be the case. The other programs gave options. Honestly the Saturday interview is a breath of fresh air. The number of Friday interviews gets tough to schedule

I guess the interviews are no longer coming :(

For those that have started their interview season, how is it going? Are they asking medical questions?

It is more casual, very brief! Why Endo and little bit about yourself. Then they talk about the program.

They still ask 5 years, 10 years down the road, I don't know in what way that will help in differentiating candidates. It is obvious candidates change from academic to PP and vice versa!

i love it how someone will post this and then the next post is an interview invite.

if you are not receiving invites and have places that you have not heard from, what are you doing about it? You need to be proactive! Unless you are fairly competitive candidate, you can't just click the apply button and then expect invites to flow in.

Hey everyone. Good luck to all this for this match. I can help add in some dates.

Mayo(Rochester) invitation to interview 7/26
Dartmouth-Hitchcock invitation to interview 8/6
Johns Hopkins invitation to interview 8/14
U of Louisville invitation to interview 8/21
Loyola invitation to interview 8/29
UCLA-Harborview invitation to interview 8/29

Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin invitation to interview 8/13

Howdy folks. Largely same dates as posted, but has anyone heard from NYC programs thus far?

Hey,
Any idea about the difference between UCLA-Harbor and City of Hope?! PM if you prefer..

As I understand, there is no separate City of Hope fellowship. Rather the fellows in the UCLA-Harbor program rotate at City of Hope

It would be great to hear thoughts on specific programs if anyone is willing to do so. Also, what are some of the biggest differences you see in programs? Are interviews scheduled through October for most people?

I will be applying next cycle and have been shocked how little there is here on SDN compared to all the other IM subspecialties.

really? you're surprised that a subspecialty that has maybe at best 300-400 people applying has "only" 23k views? this is not cards or GI...

Absolutely agree with you. The last 5 years, the number of applicants in the match for Endocrinology has ranged from 306 to 342, so usually on the lower end of your estimate. Maybe cracking low 350s if we include anyone that took a position out of the match (I don't think there's too many programs left like that - but there's some).

I wasn’t talking in terms of total posts or views but in terms of aggregate info from the many ERAS years’ threads and other Endo content. There just isn’t very much program-specific discussion that I could find. That may also be because it’s small and people would rather not share their pros/cons and honest feelings since it’s harder to stay anonymous in a smaller group.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone this cycle!

If you have any advice or thoughts for an upcoming applicant that you’d rather not post publicly, shoot me a message.

Hey Guys, wondering anybody has an interview from Mount Sinai hospital in NYC yet? thanks so much

I'll give my input on some programs:

Orlando - beautiful new VA facility that you spend 75% of your time at. The rest is spent at Osceola hospital. While at the VA they try to "protect" you from only seeing diabetics since you'll get a lot of that at Osceola. The faculty seem extremely friendly, especially the ones you'll work with in clinic. It's a newer program so you have to be comfortable with that. A part of it will be dependent on your own willingness to pave a path/curriculum that suits your needs.

OSU - from what I saw, a great opportunity to see a wide variety of path. I think they would give great training for your 2 years. A couple of the faculty don't seem as friendly, however the program director and division director were amazing. They make you feel like they'll really value your opinion.

UT Houston - I think the greatest advantage is being in the Houston medical center. The opportunities that come with that are self-explanatory. MD Anderson is one facility you get to rotate through so you can get some good publications/cases out of that .MD Anderson also offers an optional 3rd year to specifically focus on cancer. So if endocrine cancers are your forte, this seems like a great option. The Endo faculty were amazing, all of them. The fellows seem very happy as well

Nicely done...be helpful to others if everyone did this...

Thanks for that. Are most interviews just the one day or are there dinners the night before also that are required/expected?

Good luck to all on the rest of interviews.
None do pre-interview dinner!

Is anyone getting a few offers still. I've had a couple programs state they had ERAS issues with messaging. Loyola just invited me so I assume there's a waitlist even if it's not explicitye stated

Hello guys, any of you on J-1 status, how difficult is to find a waiver job as an endocrinologist?
Thanks

Was never on a visa but had a cofellow who was and knew some others. If you're geographically flexible, it's not difficult at all - many facilities in states in the midwest, plains states, south are quite desperate and happy to sponser J1 waiver jobs. If you want to stay in a big coastal city though, you're basically limited to just finding a VA willing to hire you or working as a PCP for a few years (YMMV).

Hi all,
I was hoping someone could comment on the "for profit" or "non-profit" status of the following institutions. It's not as easy to find on the internet as one would think.

1) George Washington University (pretty sure FOR profit)
2) Drexel University/Hahnemann Hospital (pretty sure FOR profit)
3) Medstar Georgetown University Hospital (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)
4) Johns Hopkins (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)
5) University of Maryland (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)
6) University of Virginia (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)

9) Virginia Commonwealth University (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)
10) Medical University of South Carolina
11) Ohio State University (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)
12) University of Illinois at Chicago (pretty sure NON-PROFIT)

Thanks!
