Starting to freak out since some people are getting invites so want to know what my realistic chances are outside of my home institution:

American grad, MD, US citizen
Step 1 - 203, Step 2 CK - 211 (CK passed), Step 3 - 227. All on first try.
Mid-tier University Med School
Mid-tier University Residency Program
4 LORs, 3 from GI, 1 from IM PD

14 posters (DDW, ACG, AASLD, ISHEN, ACS), presenter on majority of them
6 oral presentation
2 Published case reports, 3 accepted but not yet published, 4 submitted/under review
2 Published manuscripts, 5 submitted/under review. (Some multi-institutional but only first author on 3 of the 7)
3 Active projects
1 Basic science thesis
6 Food critic articles

Not AOA but recipient of 2 National AOA Research Awards for GI related projects (but honestly MyERAS kinda buried this in the footnotes of the application).

Applied to 70 programs. Any [brutally honest] input would be great. Thanks!
You are/will be getting screened out many places with step filters. Be aggressive in having your home faculty send emails/make calls to programs on your behalf throughout your region and then do so yourself, this will get your bulk of interviews, once you get through interview doors, you could be even ahead of others with better steps if your research and letters legit being from good program and US AMG

What's the major number of interviews to feel good about matching?

12 is the lucky number.

I ended up canceling 5 IVs, matched to my number 1 in USA. When you cancel/ decline, don’t wait a week. Just cancel or decline the offer. Give some one else a chance.
Is good Karma.

I was also in the match for Canada had 3 IV in Canada since I only applied to 3 programs.
If I would of matched to Canada I would have been taken out of the match from NRMP since I matched via CaRMS.

I know like 6 people this year who applied to Canada also. In my year I think there was 4 and 2 ended up matching in USA and 2 matched in Canada.

if someone does not match with 10 ivs he probably won't with 20 as well.

So true. I actually know of a person who had 12 interviews and did not match and I know of a person who matched with 2 IVs only.
I think the former really screwed her interviews and the latter she was just lucky.

i think the season has barely began.. hald the programs don't invite before labor day.

Too early. Know of many programs that are still in the phase of first year fellow transition and waiting for end of August or even early September to start inviting.

Do not panic around 160 or so programs I believe and I am sure we will hear from all soon.

Last year some person here had over 22 interviews and like 20 came after September.

I personally know 3 people who had 8-10 and did not match. It mostly had to do with poor interviewing. Even if you are on your 12th interview treat it as your only one. Don’t take anything for granted.
Totally agree. Stellar CV and letters can’t overcome Poor interpersonal communication skills

HI

I am an IMG, second-time applicant and was a bit nervous seeing the interviews flow in. Could you guys let me know of my chances and how I should plan through the season.

My credentials are as follows:
H1-B visa IMG, second-time applicant
residency from community program/ uni affiliation in an urban area
scores: >255 in step 1 and 2, cs pass in the second attempt, step 3 score 227
LOR for 1 research mentor in GI, 1 clinical from GI, 1 med letter from faculty
Pubs: 7 pubs (3 original, 1 case series, 2 case reports, 1 review article - all as primary author), 7 published abstracts, 4 posters apart from the published abstracts. 3 submitted original articles as primary, 1 online publication
currently a hospitalist at a big academic center (started after graduation from residency in July 2019)

I had about 3 Ivs last time but did not match. At that time, I had just 3 pubs n mentioned 4 posters
I would greatly appreciate your help

Is the H1B that is hurting you plus your attempt.
Also applying to two major fields GI and Hem/onc your CV is most likely all mixed up.

What are you doing now applying to Hem/onc

Your CV is mixed you won’t get GI. Most likely won’t get Hem/onc either

Did you also apply to hem/onc since you posted on the forum

If you wanted GI you should of just concentrated in GI and digestive diseases.

Are those better than Emory, Vandy, and MUSC?
Emory and Vand, I IV at both, strong places but was not happy with the way they structured their daily routine and exposure.
UAB > Emory > Vandy > Florida > MUSC

Hey all,

Long time lurker (Circa 2010), first time posting. I know we are still early but I only have 1 interview thus far and I am wondering if there is any benefit to adding more programs to my list. I am an AMG from a strong mid-tier university program with decent research 3 GI letters and reasonable board scores. (220s, 240s, 220s).

The consensus from our upper levels has been than applying to 30 programs is more than enough but I am starting to get nervous. I've applied to 30 places mostly mid/upper tier as low-tier programs don't usually give us interviews.

Would love thoughts on adding more to the list this late in the game.

What didn't you like specifically? What makes UAB above them?

I just felt they were more transparent and friendly. Academic wise you rotated in all fields and had the chance to do away electives. You also had the chance to get involve some really innovative cutting edge advance technology creation which will most likely be available for patient care pretty soon

Is saving 1000$ worth it at this point? Prolly not. its always better to have more IVs in hand and cancel, rather than scramble for IVs. Apply at least 30 more

Had a friend who applied twice and got only 2 IVs due to attempt in step 3. You are getting filtered out in many places. Given only 40 or so programs give H1, wouldnt expect a huge jump in your chances. PDs dont like applicants who go out of training when applying. Trying to be realistic, you prolly can expect 3-5 IVs. but visa will always be your thorn. When can you expect GC?

I tend to agree with scopeguy above. Your board scores (mainly step 1 in the 220s) will likely get you screened out by most of the upper tier programs. And it may be hit or miss on the mid tier programs depending on region. I would apply more broadly and add lower tier university programs to your list.

Hi everyone,

This is a repost but need your opinion on whether I need to add more programs.

AMG
Step 1: 227 Step 2 CK: 240s Step 2 CS passed at second attempt (I was sick the first time) step 3: Cannot remember the score now. Maybe 220s-230s.
Chief resident.
No in-house fellowship. From a community program with connection to a highly ranked university programs (probably does not mean much but I do have good relationship with some of the attendings there).
4 GI publications (2 as first author and 1 as second). 1 published in hepatology.
1 Abstract that won an award at ACG though I did not present it myself but was listed as first author, 1 Case report in ACG
2 posters (I presented 1 at DDW).
4 LORs (strong PD LOR since I am chief, 2 GI LOR from well known faculty who works at the university, the last GI letter was also from a well published faculty at my home institution).

40 Programs I applied to:
Arizona: U of A Phoenix, Creighton U/St Joseph
Cali: All the cali programs.
Texas: All the Texas programs.
Colorado: U of Colorado
DC: George Washington, MedStar Health.
Louisiana: LSU, Ochsner, Tulane
U of New Mexico, U of Nevada, U of Washington, Oregon Health and Science, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson.

Is 40 broad enough for me? What else could I add that would be in my reach? Thanks!!

Def not enough. You gotta be looking at 100 programs at least. Comm program, attempt in CS - given volume of applicants and quality out there, you are at disadvantage. Chief year is a positive.

I second this, apply to more programs ASAP

I am still sitting at zero. Kind of freaking out. Approximately 15-20% of the programs should have sent out interviews by now. Is this a bad sign?
