USMLE Official 2019 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry if this is not the right place to post: feel free to move

Is moving the actual date up by a few days a good idea? I'm totally getting burnt out, pretty happy with my scores lately, and feel like I have reached my peak:
Original goal: 240
CBSE: 220 (5 wks)
22: 223 (4 wks)
21: 240 (2.5 wks)
UW1: 258 (2 wks)
20: 250 (2 days ago)
18: 252 (today-5/13)
UW2: Considering taking it tomorrow after hopefully reviewing 18- I can't look at Anki without contempt right now (my only study source essentially) I just want questions at this point.

Test scheduled for 5/23, want to move it 5/20 (only open earlier date in my area)

Here's the meat/potatoes: I have a 3 y/o son and a ~2 month old baby boy that I would love to enjoy a few extra days of freedom with. Not to mention my wife, who has been so understanding of these past few weeks. Luckily she's on maternity leave, but the whole situation is going about as well as you could imagine with a toddler and a newborn. I essentially start rotations the week after Step, so a extra few days to enjoy with my family would be worth more than a few extra points (if that is/was even possible). Any advice appreciated from this crowd-TIA
DO IT. 3 days of extra study isn't going to make a difference.

Took my first practice test today
UWSA 1: 245

Kinda bummed. I’m 70% through uworld at like 79-80% correct. Looking at that online score converter thing I thought I’d do a little better.

I thought the first block was insane. Looking back though I was just really nervous. The last two blocks I stopped caring and did much better. Kind of worried that the score is inflated bc I’ve seen that on these fora and reddit. But I’ve also seen it perfectly predicting scores too so who knows.

I don’t know **** about stats...

So happy to be done! Finished each block with usually ~10 minutes to spare. Marked around 5-10 each block but felt like I was able to narrow it down at least. Super similar to uworld and had a couple almost verbatim repeats from both the qbank and exams as well as a few NBMEs. Skimmed 23 questions and answers on reddit and there were some very similar topics tested it sounded like. I would take that if you get the chance. But the real kicker- had SO MANY straight recall questions straight out of zanki. Do not neglect your reviews!

Verbatim repeats from UW? Or the free 120? And are you referring to the new NBMEs? Congrats on being done man! Super jealous, mines in less than two weeks. Getting nervous about it. All that's left on my schedule is UWSA2 and free120, but I'm on the fence if I should take a new NBME too

Congrats on being done! Would you say UWorld or the new NBMEs were more comparable?

And glad to hear there were so many straight recalls- I was debating on dumping my deck since the reviews are piling up but I think I'm gonna stick with it

Verbatim on all three surprisingly. I skimmed 23 and there were very, very similar topics tested for me today. I didn’t take it, so idk what their questions were exactly, but the discussions I read had super similar substances to them. You’ll kill it!

Absolutely the uworld exams and the qbank. The new NBMEs (20-22) were a waste of time compared to today’s exam. The exam today I felt like gave me the opportunity to give an educated guess on the questions I wasn’t super knowledgeable about. I never felt that way about the newer NBMEs personally. Definitely keep up with your deck if you can. I got lucky and remembered most of the ones they tested, but I wouldn’t have spent more than 30 seconds on some of them if I had actually kept up with mine.

261 on NBME 21 last weekend (257 on 18 a little over 2 weeks back; 250 on 20 the weekend after). Moved my exam to 11 days from now. I'll probably make it through 60-70% of Uworld by the time I get there. After all these posts from YoungDoc I might try and sneak some of my Zanki path/phys reviews in to supplement. Uworld hovering around 89/90% total with 40% done, although it has been higher over the past week.

The fear grows stronger. I just want to take the damn thing but I'm definitely still filling in gaps. I'm feeling confident based on my scores, but it's odd not finishing Uworld. I'll take UWSA2 this weekend and hopefully rock it.

I hate waiting.

Also, you are all champions. Keep grinding.

Watching your career with great interest... Hoping to follow in your footsteps!

Just now hitting UWorld for the first time, 5.5 weeks out from test and scoring ~80%, praise Zanki. Gotta pump these rookie numbers up though!

You'll never go pro if you don't work on those numbers, Kev. haha

I started around the same percentages. Once you get into a flow with the question format and timing the zanki knowledge will come shining through the brain fog to rescue you. In my case Uworld revealed clear weaknesses pretty fast (lookin at you, genetics and biochem), and being able to hammer those down helps too.

Edit: Also, 80% is super solid. Just to be clear.

What's decent for a UW second pass? I got 67% on my first pass and a 225 on NBME21

Just reset UW yesterday with 4 weeks to go. I'm getting in the mid 80s which I know isn't like superstar but I don't remember probably half of the questions (did half of them between jan-april and half in dedicated)

4 weeks of dedicated left, trying to break 240. Worth throwing in a diff QBank?

There's no clear number for a "decent" uworld second pass, just make sure you're learning from your mistakes.

Is everyone else feel like they are hemorrhaging information? Like on the NBMEs and UW now I will get questions and KNOW that I should know it, yet I'm sitting there like a ***** staring at the question with my mouth open. My NBME scores are all in the same ballpark so it's not like I'm going down but still.

Most of my anxiety comes directly from this.

"Sure you remember it now, but what if in two weeks you remember nothing at all for no reason? Have you considered that? Had this occurred to you?" - Me to myself every night

Edit: I have the experience you described once per Uworld block on average

Could someone tell me how to buy the nbme exams? I tried today and made an account on nbme but just have no idea what to buy or how to navigate the site. I’m old

We are score twins. Same score on NBME 21, and I am finishing up UW this week with 67% correct and am 5 weeks out from my test. I am not going to throw in another Qbank - I am going to go through UW twice and master those concepts, making sure to go that extra layer deeper on my second pass vs first pass. I randomly throw in 5-10 kaplan physiology questions every once n awhile bc physiology is my weak point, but I am not going to dedicate much time to another Qbank when UWorld is so good

Nice!! That honestly seems like the best thing to do. I don't trust anything but UW and NBMEs but just don't wanna plateau either.

Best of luck we got this!

Ah thanks. I was looking for something that said nbme20 etc.

This will buy all three? And what about the “free 120”.

Sorry for being a bother. I just don’t want to waste money on something when they have “all purchases are non-refundable” everywhere. I’m a DO student and most don’t know about this at my school.

Free 120: NBME Orientation

No you have to buy each one individually.

And same with me at my school. Most students here don't even take NBMEs lol

So an update
264~USWA 1
Three days later
242-on 17
Next day
244- 25 24
One day break in between
250 on 18.

Fill your damn gaps people. NBMEs will expose a gap and then drive a bus through it.

Any suggestions on the new NBMEs ? I was planning on taking 23 and uswa 2+free 120 over the next week, and leaving the rest to grind out some of my weak spots.

Should i take 20, 21, 22? I could probably blow through in a day in a half, but D day is arriving and I only have 5 days left ~280 u world questions left.

Hoping i can squeeze another 5-10 points out of this sucker.

Dude yes. My test is in 10 days and I feel like I'm losing everything.

I would probably just take 24 >> any of 20-22 and use the rest of the time to go over weak points, anki, chill, etc. One of the posters above said 20-22 were not very comparable to their exam at all

^^ just read your above post and I am guessing when you said 244 on 25 that was supposed to be 24, so if that's the case I'd probably just finish UW, take 23, UWSA, free 120 and call it a day

I'm so frustrated right now. I just got the same score on NBME 21 as I did on 20 which I took 1.5 weeks ago. It's 20+ points less than my goal score. My UW average is 80% with half done but my NBME scores remain so low.
5 weeks to go. Does anyone have any advice?
make a spreed sheet of all the questions you got wrong, type why you got it wrong reasoning , knowledge deficet, misread.

Then figure out what you are weak in and hammer out that weakness.

If 80% average is your first pass you are going to be fine for the exam, the NBMEs are just way more factoid driven and will smack you over the head if you have any weakness. IMO.

This. You'll know the whole pathway of what they are talking about except the one tiny detail they want as the answer. When the scales are as harsh as they are if you get 5 questions on one line facts you don't know that will drop you 4-8 points depending on the form.

Drives me insane. I can get 4/5 the steps right, but get 0 credit and get slammed with how crazy the scales are. Confidence plummets. Rinse repeat

the new exams have very generous scales. But it is silly at the end of the day how much this stupid multiple choice exam matters.

That’s reassuring. I’m taking 19 Saturday. Can’t wait to knock myself down a few notches again right to start dedicated. With an 80% being a 211 on 17 that hurt the psyche. I just want at least a 230 is that too much to ask?

Yeah they do, I am hoping they are indicative of the real thing. My scores are all grouped in the exact same spot on the new ones.

I also agree at how stupid it is. The more I study for this the more I truly realize inane it all is. The fact that I have to take COMLEX is even more inane. If I decide I want to chase a surgical sub or something like that then I will need a good COMLEX, which means my ability to do a surgical sub rests fully on my ability to know OMM pseudoscience as it is impossible to get a high level COMLEX score without scoring well on the OMM questions.

The curve is definitely a lot nicer, I got an 81% on 23 and it was a 238, and 82% on 21 was a 242 I think. They are a lot harder than the old ones though IMO, so there is that.

I mean if its a fair scale I’d take it. Nothing quite like feeling like you knew a vast majority of the answers and then come out to see you scored 20 points below average haha a big problem I have is switching answers too so hopefully with eliminating that I’ll see a bump

100% this, i feel as though I'm getting dumber as time goes on. It's hard to say if I've even net learned a single thing at this point in dedicated taking into account how much I feel like I forgot.

I was doing pathoma today and saw a page I had done at the beginning of dedicated and all the notes I had written and had completely forgotten it to the point that I thought I had written it first year or something...ooof

i'm curious if anyone has some encouraging words about worrying i'm gonna forget everything. i realize this is insane but as yall know it's so easy to worry.
i'm in my last few days of dedicated, enjoying a slowed up pace now that i've finished UWorld and i'm just keeping up with my anki cards and studying my weak points that were evident along the ride. for some reason, i'm freaking out that i'm gonna forget everything i've learned in the next 6 days before my test. is this normal? any advice on coping with this or how to not be crazy in general? on another note, i know i'm well prepared and could score what i want if i took the test tomorrow. part of me wants to reschedule and move it up 6 days to get it out of the way, but the other part of me wants to keep it so i can drill these last few points and try to squeeze another 4 or 5 points out of the test. any tips in that regard?

From what I've heard it's pretty normal. Mines in 9 days and I'm struggling with this too. Feel like with each passing day I'm risking forgetting everything.

im on my 12th day of 40 or so of dedicated and can not stand the feeling that each day after ~11-12 hours of studying with 30 minutes of breaks total i feel like i didnt do enough. i always wonder after 8pm if i should be passively listening to a BnB or pathoma lecture even though i KNOW i would not get anything out of it at that point. its a constant balance between burning out/waking up apathetic tomorrow and having a ****ty day vs keeping the motivation and energy level high tomorrow morning. the fluctuation in my mood morning vs. night is insane

hope everyones coping better than me out there. gonna take a day or half day off this week after UWSA1

its totally normal. I feel like a zombie. But realistically im only studying 8-9 hours a day

being well rested and in a good state of mind will get you a much better score instead of burning yourself out by studying for an extra hour at the end of the day. don't worry about it!

So just finished 18 and got a 248. I am debating moving my test up a week. I am scheduled to take it in 3 weeks but I don't know if that extra week will help me all that much, and man it would be nice to have an extra week's vacation. The only thing holding me back is I feel like there is still so much crap I don't know, and I'm worried about getting a form on the real thing that hammers my weaknesses. I might just take UW2 on Monday and see how that goes and make my decision off of that.

Any advice? Thoughts?

edit: probably won't be able to move it because my 3 month window doesn't include May for some reason 🙄 That's ok, I'll just try and squeeze another 5 points out it.

if you are happy with 248+-5 i would move up and take the damn thing, after free 120 and UW2.

I'd move it up. I think if you're even considering moving it up, you should.

Advice on how to go through a focused second pass? Finishing up Uworld pass #1 this week and itll be 4 weeks till the exam. Dedicated just started (cruel joke we hadn't started already). Sitting probably about 215ish want to try to get as high as possible, 230-240 ideal. Gonna do random timed pass through uworld now (did tutor subject based first to learn), but I'm wondering how to go through each subject again on top of the questions. Right now I was gonna work through FA and use some pathoma, but don't wanna get too much into the passive learning game since I've already gone through B&B

I wanted to say thanks everyone for the feedback on my situation - I ended up taking UWSA2 and was satisfied, so I pulled the trigger.

You seem to be doing pretty well already, so I guess it depends on your goals. If I had hit your score with 3 weeks left, moving it wouldn't have been a question. I wish I could've moved it up more, but my scores didn't progress quickly enough. I think taking a few days to hit your weakest areas, and then taking UWSA2 would probably be a good idea if your considering moving it. You'll still have 2 weeks though, so you'll want another way to assess yourself I suppose? Another NBME? Good luck and enjoy that extra week 👍

Yeah the more I think about it the less I think the extra week will actually change anything. I would be perfectly content with a 248+-5, and honestly I'm not really sure how much more I could even go up in that extra week.
Definitely take UWSA2 next and hammer home whatever you feel weak on, then move that shiz up and spend some time chilling out and hanging out with the family!

Is there such a thing as regressing during dedicated? Or maybe I'm just having a bad week? My qbank average has stayed stagnant throughout dedicated which I wasn't really worried about, even though it sucks not seeing any improvements. But this past week, if anything, my average % is starting to tick downwards. I'm hoping it's just by chance that I got wrecked with questions targeting my weak points, but the whole idea of feeling dumber and dumber as time goes on is really getting to me.

Just finished establishing my baseline at exactly 6 weeks from my exam. NBME 15 wrecked me (209.) Lolll.

Gunna go vent at the gym then make a list of the things I suck at. I've only done UWorld & Anki at this point; no legit content review or review of the concepts I have hit on in UWorld, so I'll start hacking away at that tomorrow.

240+ still the goal for me. Gunna be a long 6 weeks.

I wish we knew which of the new NBMEs is most predictive because as it stands right now I only have time to take 5 practice tests, UWSA1, UWSA2, NBME18, + 2 New NBMEs, but I'm not sure which ones. Any ideas or suggestions, would be appreciated.
