How come the match list on their website does not show any of their derm matches and does not show their rad onc match?

Well, the average of step scores for those matching IM is no where near 250, probably around 230, that's not to say that there are no 250s (The 250s are likely in top academic residencies). Those that have the 250 and went into IM is probably because that is their passion, family members in practice, etc. or, maybe they wanted one of the specialities, but the rest of their app was not at the level of those applying, who knows.The actual statistics mean nothing? No matter what metric you go by (top school, most research, highest scores, AOA), most top students are not going into those fields. If you have a 250+/AOA (same applies to 260 or 270 if 250 isn't high enough for you), you are obviously not weeded out of orthopedics, but most of them are choosing to go into IM. Surgical fields are just not appealing to most med students.
Besides the general data in charting outcomes, efle had gathered a decade of data specific to a top 10 med school. Even among AOAs of a top 10 school, interest in IM tends to dominate the other fields.

Hey everyone. Recently discovered some interesting data and thought I'd share two highlights. I just don't agree with your assessment in that "most" top students don't want the specialities. No one has said that the all of the elite applicants want a speciality.
I do agree with with this quote from your post, "DOPEN" shouldn't be a criteria to determine match quality unless the institution has a weak department in one of those fields."

Seems kinda difficult to understand that all 5 dermatology matches would opt out of putting the information out to the public. Like the probability of that just seems to be very low that all five of them would opt out.

I went through and found all the students who were listed as "Transitional or Preliminary" and if I could match up their name with a PGY2 program (like radiology, ophth, derm, etc.) I took that prelim listing off. I can link the list I took the information from, if you like.
It is oddly organized by State where the student matched. I also like to post lists without names.

The average is lower in IM because there are 9k+ spots in IM to accommodate not only tons of top students but also many middle/low students. There's no need to speculate that 250+ IM residents are few due to a 230s average, because we have the exact data from charting outcomes that there are far more 250+ people in IM than any other field despite the average. Even the top IM programs have tons of spots compared to orthopedics or ENT. And again, if you think the 250+ applicants are too weak for ortho, you can use stricter criteria such as AOAs from the top 10 schools (see the link in my response to you prior) or 260+/ AOA (these profiles are more impressive than the average in those surgical fields) or choices of HMS graduates. But overwhelmingly, top students do tend to to choose IM over the other fields. Also, many top students do want a specialty eventually, as most those at top IM programs specialize.

The website has 2021s list posted under 2022.
Only 3 General Surg, 3 Ortho, and only 19 IM. While Ophtho is 9, Derm is 7, and Psych is 11!
Obviously Yale students go for the easier lifestyle fields. Makes sense, as it has reputation as being a chill Med School. Self selects!

The website currently shows 2021 and also is incorrect lol. There were multiple derm matches last year, whole specialties got left out for some reason from the list online. Dunno why but most likely clerical error
Edit: actually, weirdly some of the specialties are correct 2022 matches and some are still 2021. Like my 2022 match is in there correctly but I know that Urology for example is 2021’s list. Idk who updates that part of the website but they are consistently not good at it

I can promise you from personal experience (in addition to the hard data others have cited) that there are many many excellent students who don’t go for “DOPEN” or whatever. The OR sucks and skin is boring. Less competitive fields are not just fall backs, there’s just more room in them for all kinds of students. But people aiming for those super competitive types of fields are going to work extra extra hard to try to get those high scores because they need them

The point is SDN is emphasizing derm/surgical subs to assess the quality of match lists as if everyone wants to go into these fields. Lots of strong students actually have valid reasons not to do derm or surgical subs and match into other fields that they want to do. There is more to medicine than derm/surgical subs and SDNers are weirdly struggling to understand this

It's an Internal Medicine residency track - at most programs, nearly the same schedule as categoricals, but with more ambulatory/outpatient time. Residents in the PC track may still apply for specialties and match similarly, assuming equivalent resumes.
