*~*~* Official AACOMAS Questions Thread 2016-2017 *~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I have a question in regards to year in school: I graduated a year early (3 years of undergrad) and I had 14 credits before starting my official first year at my degree granting institution. Here is my breakdown:
Pre-freshman year acquired 14 credits
Including semester 1 total = 31 credits
Including semester 2 total = 47 credits
Including semester 3 total = 64 credits
Including semester 4 total = 80 credits
Including semester 5 total = 100 credits
Including semester 6 total = 120 credits

So my question is what would I use when assigning my "year in school" right now I have it so:
semester 1 total = 31 credits (freshman)
semester 2 total = 47 credits (soph)
semester 3 total = 64 credits (jr)
semester 4 total = 80 credits (jr)
semester 5 total = 100 credits (sr)
semester 6 total = 120 credits (sr)

Is that right or should it be:
semester 1 total = 31 credits (freshman)
semester 2 total = 47 credits (soph)
semester 3 total = 64 credits (soph)
semester 4 total = 80 credits (jr)
semester 5 total = 100 credits (sr)
semester 6 total = 120 credits (sr)

Right now I have it set up so that my "year in school" changes based off of:
0-30 (fresh)
31-60 (soph)
61-90 (jr)
91-120 (sr)

but on the AAMC instruction manual it says use: (couldn't find anything concrete for AACOMAS, so I checked with
0-35 (fresh)
36-65 (soph)
66-95 (jr)
96+ (sr)

Please help!

for my rowing club I just listed my University as the supervisor

so you didn't put a number or email or something? I mean i assume the point of having someone's contact information is to verify your experience, not necessarily to call them and ask what kind of person you were in that organization.

Do you think submitting June 7th (same as AAMC) will hurt me?

Personally no, and I think the general consensus is no. I am gonna submit probably late next week, but my LOR won't be sent until late June (same for my MCAT).

DO runs on a different timeframe than AAMC too.

Outside my knowledge base alas

Dang, I would like to know as well--gonna call them tomorrow about this? I took classes at another school after my freshman ear, and don't know which to assign it--freshman or sophomore year...

Hi everyone. An AACOMAS question for you here.

So I am a post-bacc student. I retook my Physics I, Physics, II, Organic I and Organic II. as a post bac and did quite well at Cleveland state university. My original undergrad was SUNY Geneseo. I marked the courses as repeated when filling out my app at SUNY Geneseo but was not able to mark the repeated course at cleveland state university. I tried quite hard, but because SUNY Geneseo was my "primary institution where I earned my degree" there was no way for me to mark the classes at Cleveland state as repeated when verifying my transcripts.

Today my application was e-verified and much to my horror it had my science GPA as 3.1ish. When it should have been 3.3-3.4 ish with the repeats. I emailed the AACOMAS customer service people and explained that I was not able to mark the classes at Cleveland State and that I tried. They told me this:

""Unfortunately, if the repeated courses taken across schools were not correctly
reported prior to submission, they may not be changed at this point, now that
the application has been verified."

What should I do here? I have worked extremely hard the last 1.5 years to work full time getting healthcare experience and to bust my butt replacing poor classes with As. The reality is my application is only competitive with the replaced grades. I can't imagine waiting another full year because of a clerical error, especially because I don't feel it was my fault.

Has anyone ever encountered a similar situation like this? The repeated classes were exactly the same in content and the whole idea was to have them replaced for this application.

Please help.

Apparently repeats can only be marked as repeats before the verification. Unfortunately, AACOMAS won't allow any verified courses to be edited during the update period either. Only new or in-progress courses can be added. 🙁

If I may ask, how come you weren't able to mark the courses you took at Cleveland State as repeats? Was it not an option because it wasn't your primary?

Question ya'll. Apply now with low cGPA (3.0-3.2) or wait until I complete my summer courses that will bump it up by .15? I wouldn't be turning in my app until August if I waited. I am scared about applying now and then the schools only seeing my lower GPA and not seeing my newer GPA. I just do not want to be screened out. I am also scared about possibly being too late if I apply in August. Thoughts? I heard the academic update in Sept is brutal.
August is not late per AACOMAS standards. I'm only concerned that you'll be screened out with the lower 3.0 range. If it's 3.2, however, just make sure you don't submit to KCU because they screen anything below 3.25. I believe CUSOM also screens at 3.2, but not 100% sure.

Listing high school volunteer hours on AACOMAS, yay or nay? Also, are you guys putting significant hobbies or just work related things on your apps?
STRONG NAY! Putting some hobbies, but only those I've won awards in.

Hello! I have a couple of questions for my application.

1. I wanted clarification since I wanted to send my application next week but I did not add any LORs yet. So even after I submit and get verified can I still add a new evaluator because on the website it says I can edit but nothing about adding a new one?

2. I spent my first year of college working at a retail store and I don't know if it is worth putting on experiences. I mean it was my first job, but any suggestions?

1. Correct, you can still add LORs after verification.

2. I feel you may be able to apply a large positive spin on retail experience as it pertains to customer satisfaction and service, and medicine also heavily relies on patient satisfaction and public service.

Yes thats what I'm saying. I fully realize the cleveland state transcripts were supposed to be marked but it wasn't physically possible. When I hit that green verify and review button never once did I see any transcript from my post bacc school (Cleveland state). It only showed my undergrad. I marked the undergrad transcript perfectly correct.

That's a bit worrisome. My situation is much like yours, and I repeated multiple courses at institutions other than my primary.

Has this happened to anyone else who already submitted their app?

Is there any way I can view my PS in a pdf or some other form without actually submitting my application yet?

No if I didn't know the number or email then I didn't put it...usually for clubs each year there is a new main contact (president or w.e) and so if they wanna verify my experience you can just call my university and they will direct you to the most appropriate person....But for the clubs I 100% knew who the main contact is I put their email

how exactly do we submit? I went to "submit application" but the "pay and submit this program" button is not green? confused

If I am not adding any evaluation letters yet do I click "I am not adding any evaluations"? Will clicking this allow me to add the letters after submission?

Yes, you can add LORs afterwards

This is my first time applying and I have a few questions! I am a nervous wreck about inputting all of this info correctly.

1. I originally took my courses at a university and am retaking them this summer at a community college. This will count for grade replacement, correct?

2. If I turn in my grades for the retakes this summer during the academic update in September, the new GPA calculated will be with the grade replacement and not averages of the original course and the retake?

3. To make sure I input the information correctly: right now I just have the original course listed with the grade and credits. I have put the repeats in progress. I did not mark either the original course or the repeat course as a repeat. Should I mark the them as repeat and keep the credits on the original course even though I have no grades for the repeated course?

Sorry for the massive message! Thanks!

For number 2, any retake must be taken at the same University or college as the first time around otherwise it will not be considered a retake but averaged with regards only to the academic update period. Incredibly stupid I know but it is what it is. If you are taking many retake it may be better to apply once those grades are on your transcript.

+1 whatever you do, DO NOT submit until you are done with your retakes this cycle. You'll find them to be almost useless if you try adding them during academic update. One of the major down falls of the AACOMAS academic update

Maybe a dumb question, but I'm still two years out from applying. How is everyone getting their LOR in? Like so I ask my professor or doctor I'm shadowing for a LOR...then what happens. I'm sorry, I've only ever gotten a letter during high school when I was applying to college.

Many people set up an account with a third-party holding service that ensures confidentiality while still allowing students to ask for a letter of recommendation years out from when they'll apply. Interfolio is the one I use and it's also very common. You would request the recommendation through Interfolio and your letter writer would upload it to their website, where it will be held until you need it.

Is there a way to remove a school from which you are applying to? So when I first started my application it told me to pick a school (I chose MSUCOM), now I can add schools but can I delete MSUCOM?

If you haven't submitted yet yeah you just go back to the school selection tab and click on it I believe

Oy, I totally missed the detail that your retakes are at a school other than your primary! My complete bad.

100% agreed with the other posters. Don't submit until your retakes are completed!

I had about 200 or 250 hours of hospital volunteer work during my junior year in high school. I volunteered so much that by the time I was in college I did not volunteer anymore because I had so much exposure. Is this something I could put on AACOMAS--I know high school stuff is a no no, but I am wondering if this is an appropriate exception?

I also won a city-wide award as well.

My gut feeling is NO lol

The general consensus is unless you continued your extracurriculars well into your college years, no you don't include it.

Ah, ok. Well, to maybe stretch this out--I upgraded so to speak with shadowing and then doing research at the very same hospital, could I swing it that way? If not no biggie, I can input stuff from college I just feel weird not mentioning this since I did see a lot of stuff.

Thanks for your input!

I also had a significant amount of hospital volunteering and volunteering-related awards. Instead of listing it under the activities/experience section, I was told to just briefly mention it in my PS as my motivation toward medicine. Maybe you could do that as well?

Solid suggestion--I'll see if there is a way to weave it in, but I suppose it's absence won't be too bad in the long run (my PS is about saving a person from suicide in college so I don't think I want to include it if it alters the narrative I have established)

Thanks!

what are yall putting for your descriptions of your activities? like are you doing a short resume type description just to explain what it is or are you putting more in, along the lines of what it was important, what you learned, etc.?

Also what did y'all do for leadership position for an organization? Like I was treasurer for the a club for one year but what in the club for four years, so should i put them as separate experiences or the same?

1) What is everyone's opinion on the "Professional Transcript entry" service? I'm considering it but I don't want them to mess up my re-takes. Will I also be able to edit any mistakes the service makes after they have completed transcript entry?

2) I took a class that was listed as a different name at one institution and when it was transferred to my 4-year university, the name was changed and class accepted.

Ex: took a government class

GOVT xxxx (Institution 1)

when transferred it was changed to

POLS xxxx (Institution 2)

Im trying to enter the courses from each institution, but not sure if this causes some confusion.

3) If i took a science course that was a 4 credit hour class, which included the lab, and later retook the same courses but separated lab and lecture (3 hr lecture and 1 hour lab) will I be able to replace the previous course?

Ex:

Institution 1
- General Biology 1 (Lecture + Lab) - 4 hour grade

Institution 2
- General Biology 1 Lecture - 3 hour grade
- General Biology 1 lab - 1 hour grade

I feel like I've seen this answer before but I can't seem to find it... I took a class at another institution other than my primary school and then retook it at my primary school. Will both grades be factored into my gpa? Because the retake I would think would take the most recent attempt at the class but the way that the professional transcript entry people put it into my application makes it look like two different classes and that would hurt my gpa..

Surprisingly different... I emailed AACOMAS but my transcript is already in the verification process so I might be screwed.

Were you able to resolve this issue? I'm currently debating with myself about using their professional transcript entry service but not quite sure if I should. The institution where I retook some of my courses have a different name for the same class, wondering if they will be counted or not. This entire process is stressful.

I think it's totally worth it. Zero problems with transcripts and I was verified 4 days after submission.

I don't know if you were referencing this problem or not, but if you opened an app last cycle just to look at it, out of curiosity, like I did, and now you're labeled as a reapplicant by AACOMAS, schools you apply to will not see you as a reapplicant.

I have filled my application. When can we start submitting this to be verified? I cannot submit the application for some reason. Even though I have completed everything.

Have you assigned at least one school yet?

Yeah I have at least 18 schools and already input all the requirement. I tried to submit last night but I cant. Is it because I applied for the FAP? or maybe you cannot submit it on weekend?

@pizza1994 I think i have the same problem where the submit button is not "blue" and it is totally gray.

Im sorry that this is a stupid question, but in reading over the directions Im still unable to find the anwser. How do I get to the actual application to imput extracurriculars and bio information ? When I log oon my dashboard only shows 4 tabs at the top that say My Application, Add probgram, Submit Application, Check satus. I have already mailed my transcripts and I have entered schools to apply to. When I clink on my application nothing happens. Thanks ! 🙂

I believe in the first tab, you will see 4 different boxes and each of them need to be completed before you can submit your application.
I belive the second box on the first column will have extra informations like activities and evaluations.

Do we need to state specifically "why DO?" in our personal statement?

My personal statement is primary care focused (therefore correlating well with DO), and I know there is a question that asks this on the secondary app. I want to avoid redundancy while still sounding passionate.

What are your thoughts?

Thought I'd update you guys. Just called AACOMAS. They refused to un verfity the application. I explained to them in detail my entire situation. And all they told me was too bad. 2 years, $8k and in the end none of my repeats counts. I read the instructions multiple times, followed everything exactly right and for some reason it just didn't work out. I'm literally crying. I cant apply with a 3.1

dude i'm so sorry. AACOMAS is absolutely unbelievable with their shady tactics. Since the application is already in, I would email/contact the schools individually and explain the situation. Find the contact for every single dean and get the contact info. Also AACOMAS has an academic update period starting September 1st which is when I would updating my app with some retakes as well. Maybe that would open it up again for you.

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that happen to you. How did you re enter the repeated courses? Was the name or number of the repeated course different, which is why it didn't count? Did AACOMAS tell you what reason it was that the courses didn't count after you followed everything they said?

I entered all the repeats correctly. I even got credit for the repeats that I did as a undergraduate. But when I was marking the repeat boxes my post bac transcript was never on that actual webpage. So i was unable to mark the final repeat of organic chem or physics. Thus I didn't get the repeat credit for those 18 credit hours of Cs to As. I don't know why it wasn't on that page. I'm not a dumb. I'm a neurotic premed, I read all of the instructions many times. I did everything correct that I was able to do on that page.

The names, content and credit hours were exactly the same.

When this issue happened, why did you proceed to the next step and submit your application? You should have called AACOMAS and notified them of this issue and asked them what is the proper solution.

Try calling again, this all depends on the representative that answers the phone, some are more helpful than others. If they still don't change it for you, then you can opt out to emailing individual schools and let them know of your gpa issue and send them updated transcripts. Sorry to hear this happened to you, AACOMAS are backwards sometimes with their policies.
