Official ABIM 2014 thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I just took mine two hours ago. Yeah, Partying it up on the ABIM thread 😉

First of all, the awesome review was spot on.

I felt block one was tough, two and three easy (or tricked and didn't know it), and last block was easier than the first.
I read through last year's thread, and apparently thinking there were straightforward questions and finishing thirty minutes earlier were bad signs. Well I used my last thirty minutes to review questions I flagged but felt uneasy after reading the posts.

Overall, I am feeling relieved that it's over, definitely unsure if I passed after reading all the comments from last year, and praying I pass. I'll post my results in November regardless of the status and in the meantime, let's enjoy the free time we have to be normal again!!

Thank you for your input, Thats all I am doing too. Do you think you had enough time to finish all questions in block 3 and 4?

@CorlSt Thank you for the encouraging advice. last 16 days..... and done, hopefully for next 10 years. And hope to retire before I have to take another ABIM ha ha.. doesn't cost to hope 🙂

Definitely felt that way before my test - then super nervous the night before, like it's the first day of school 🙂 Also, I broke down my breaks into 40 min - 40 min - then 20 min to read my cheat sheet (aka spiral notecards and awesome review books) to cram little more facts in between the blocks (I had nothing to lose and it helped). Good luck everyone and see ya in November!

Waiting three months for test results is RIDICULOUS. I feel like my life is on hold until I know :scared: Anyone else fretting?

2 days away from exam day guys, and frankly getting a little burnt out. I hope everyone who has taken it so far does well. Any advice on what to study these last 2 days? Anything I must absolutely review thats high yield? I'm going to stop doing MKSAP questions so as not to psych myself out, and have been focusing on the awesome review book.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

so glad to be done with the exam
now the waiting game until mid October for the results

Awesome Review notes or BB3 if you don't have Awesome Rev notes.
I gave my exam 1.5 hrs ago and I can say that I am glad it's over but I don't know if it's good enough to pass. All I need is to pass I don't care about the score just pass me.

what if you fell asleep during 2 of the IT-Exams and the other one you just marked random answers? How accurate will that be?

Hmmm... Computing...

Almost there..............................................

62% accurate. There is a good chance the examinee will fall asleep during the real test as well.

Good luck to everyone finishing up this round tomorrow - then the wait begins! Praying for a successful year for all of us that have had a not so successful year in the past. Post your success stories or share your frustrations - I know I will!

Done with mine yesterday ... Good luck to tomorrow's guys...

Done! (hopefully!) .. Definitely not as hard as the Uworld questions for sure.. Found a few I missed already though after flipping through BB3 again <sigh> Time for a nice glass of Merlot

Has anyone taken the Medstudy recert course? it's being offered in Sept in DC. Any feedback appreciated, especially in comparison to the Awesome Board review course.
The Awesome board review course is closer to home so I will probably take it. But hard to imagine sitting and listening to the same instructor for 11 hours for 6 days!

Totally unrelated but I cannot find a thread with tis info...maybe someone can direct me. I am trying to determine what is the average overhead costs for private practice. MGMA doesn't have good information. Thanks

The exam was much more abstract than I was anticipating. Much more minutiae was tested as compared to MKSAP. It's one of those things where you walk out of the center and- really- its a toss up on which way it went. I left in a foul mood. Luckily, my girlfriend was waiting for me in the car (she came to pick me up)- all dressed up, with a cold beer ready for me. So that was nice.

Hope we all pass, I guess we'll find out late October (Early November?). Will update with my results on this forum either way.

Hello All! So happy to be done!! I left thinking "there's a chance...". I guess that's the best I could hope for.

The Knowmedge videos and printouts were extremely helpful! For those taking it next year, I highly recommend it. As I went through the questions on the exam, I was able to visualize a lot of the PDFs I had printed out. Definitely good for memory recall... Really, really helpful!

The MKSAP books were good though I thought BB3 was more relevant and harder hitting for the exam... still feel that way. I thought the MKSAP qbank was alright as a source... it's a good source but I would not recommend using it as an the only source. For those taking it next year... .the MKSAP qbank by itself definitely is not enough preparation!

Alright, I'm just going to just relax for the next month.... put this thing behind me and get my life back! I think last year's results came out in early October (which is ridiculous but I don't feel like going on a rant about it).... out of sight, out of mind until then! Hope we all get some good news then!

This so much.

By this point in our lives, we've all taken hundreds of MCQ tests and dozens of high stakes one. Prior to ABIM I'd left plenty of them wondering if I'd done as well as I'd hoped to. But that was the first time I ever left an exam seriously doubting that I'd passed it.

If it makes you all feel better, I'm taking my Onc boards this year and wouldn't you know it? This is the year they've decided to incorporate multiple answer questions into the exam. Good times.

My husband didn't dress up with a beer in his hand when he saw me after exam..We may need a family meeting. lol

I agree; royal toss up regarding pass fail prediction. I hope we all pass.

Any chance that the result is posted on ABIM website prior to October?

pin <drop> wow its quiet in here!

Why wouldn't it be? This is the sort of thread that people only come to in order to get something, not to give back. Once results are out there will be a handful (<20) of posts from people who passed and 2 or 3 pages of people who didn't pass whining about how unfair it is, etc, etc. This will continue until somebody starts up the same inane thread for next year.

There's a reason I didn't sticky it.

Interesting how it's graded. They use the IRT method since 2008. Previously used the CTT method. Have a lot of respect for the psychometricians. Seems complicated.

Hey, anybody know what is the score release date? Good luck to everyone. cheers.

I don't know...the wait is killing me. Last year the scores were released October 7 but it looks like a couple years ago they were released late November! This wait is starting to get to me.

I would expect a score release on Monday. It was released the first week in October the last few years.

i hope it will be out tonight

False alarm guys....we'll try again tonight at midnight 🙂

It's up. Check it on abim.org and see if you're certified.

I passed. Huge relief. Definitely lost sleep over the last two weeks from this.

Now that I passed it's time to put some real opinions about that exam.....I hope the moderator doesn't delete my nasty comments.

Passed! Can't believe it! I went to the test bare chested without studying at all! Don't recommend it!

My recommendation to everyone out there is this:

1) Study to learn medicine during residency! Don't focus on your subspecialty of choice. Study medicine and rotate through the various subspecialties. Not just one. Know the bread and butter (you would be surprised to realize we probably don't know as much as we think we do). Just read from your patients. Keep uptodate on your phone. Download Board Basics (good for quick look ups on your patients). That's all I did for three years and I was on the 90th percentile on the ITE. Never really managed to sit down and read MKSAP from cover to cover or even do the questions.

2) Don't underestimate the test. I did and was literally crapping my pants for two months!

3) The test does teach (and test I guess) something. It sent me on a post mortem frenzy studying things that I realized I should know but didn't. The test made me realize that.

And remember. As internists (or fellows) we have a moral and ethical responsibility towards our patients. Let's do this to learn not to pass this stupid test!

Congratulations whether you passed or failed! You have come a long way since college and medical school! You are not less of a doctor either way! Believe me! I wouldn't rate you based on this test and whoever does is disconnected! Cheers to all of us!

Passed ... !!!

My 2 cents,
1) First time test taker, I studied for 4-5 months total. finished residency one year ago..
2) MKSAP question bank only x 2, books put me to sleep
3) Awesome board review, books 3-4 times
4) Knowmedge questions, did only 80% of total questions - did not repeat

I think doing questions and reading the explanation helps tremendously ! I did not have study partner.
Advice: read above things, repeat 2,3 items multiple times, and you should pass. Oh ya and I also analyzed, why did I get questions wrong and worked on test taking skills.

Thank you for your support, congratulations to all of us!
Cheers

OMG I passed - I haven't had this feeling since I found out I was pregnant with my daughter!!! My studying was intense because I didn't take it seriously last year - I studied 8 months, did a review course, all the questions numerous times and still felt ill prepared. I just knew I had failed again - I am beyond thrilled to know I was able to get through this exam and with starting my new position I feel a lot more competent and free. I am not a good test taker so to all of you that will have to try again - keep your chin up, I think its a matter of numbers but won't know until my score report is out. I hope everyone passes!

Passed! I spent more time worrying about this test than I did studying for it.

Finished residency a year ago, but due to personal reasons couldn't take the exam then. ITE's ~75th percentile? (although some subjects like neuro were 10th percentile). Working as a hospitalist, and PLANNED to study months in advance, but never really got around to it.

Spent just 2 weeks studying:
- medstudy textbooks (80%)
- MKSAP questions - 1x
- ACP IM Board Review audio - full
- Boards Basics 3 - full, 2x

Bought UWorld a few months ago with the best of intentions. Did around 25 questions and stopped because they were ridiculously hard. Didn't finish them. Weren't representative for me.

Bought Medstudy textbooks and questions. Didn't have time to touch the Medstudy questions. Went through 80% of the medstudy books just once -- some of them are really boring/dry, like renal (although high yield) and others are really well written. Spent about a week doing this.

Read MKSAP neuro a few months ago, but it was so boring that I decided I wouldn't read the rest of the MKSAP books.

Did all the MKSAP questions once over -- lowest 65%, highest 75% or so. Didn't have time to redo this, but I went through the explanations for each question I got wrong, and went over them again really quickly before the test. A lot of the "wtf" kind of questions didn't correlate with the exam. Just for fun, I did some of the MKSAP 16 quarterly update questions, and a lot of those "new" concepts didn't make it to the test. MKSAP was moderate yield, especially for classic/basic questions.

Also listened to ACP Internal Medicine Board Review - somehow I extracted the audio out of these videos and converted to to m4b format iTunes audiobook format so I could listen to them at 2x speed at the gym or while driving/walking. This was actually ridiculously high yield - I think I got at least 25 questions correct based off one lecturer's teaching points (Dr Paauw - MACP!). Did any of you come across Capnocytophaga canimorsus during residency training? Didn't think so.

Did boards basics 3 cover-to-cover. This book (actually edited by Dr Paauw) was also extremely high yield, and I think I could have answered the majority of questions on the test based on this book. The day before the test, I spent 6-8 hours re-reviewing this book and it was very very helpful. This was good enough for biostats. Someone on SDN posted a mnemonic about senators and teens for sensitivity and specificity; this REALLY helped me and I wrote it out on the laminated scratch paper they gave us during the exam.

The other thing I gathered from all these threads is that each question is weighted differently. Make sure you know your cards and GI cold!

I thought the actual test itself was really challenging and really meant to get you to think about "first principles" and went away from buzzwords or distracting info. Like, just because someone works doing XYZ doesn't mean they have rare disease ABC which is classically associated with it -- common things are common. Just because someone has HIV doesn't mean they have an HIV-related illness, etc. Knowing what complications our therapies for chronic diseases can actually prevent vs not, etc. This was truly the hardest test I have ever taken, and I got > 260 for steps 1-3. Unlike the USMLE, you can't really game it by doing USMLEWORLD like 3-4 times. I finished the first 2 blocks with 15-20 minutes to spare, but the last two I barely had time. Most of the questions required a straightforward answer, like "what is the diagnosis" or "what is the therapy?" and you either knew it or you didn't.

If I had more time, I would have done the MKSAP questions again once more, I would have finished reading Medstudy, and I would have attempted the Medstudy questions.

To clarify - I didn't think I'd pass because I spent only 2 weeks studying (too much anxiety/procrastination) and had been out of residency for a year.

I thought most of it was very straightforward.

My advice: Treat each question like a real patient/scenario and act accordingly. Common sense goes a long way. Try to do all the MKSAP questions. READ the explanations. Read the sections on more difficult and high yield topics. Dont waste time on easy and low yield topics. Be calm and relaxed during the test.

Passed! My body has stopped shaking so it's time to give back 🙂

2014
Found this forum and developed the following strategy:
Started studying slowly from November 2013 and gradually ramping up through the year
Kaplan online review 2/2014-3/2014
BB3 3x 4/2013 to 8/2013 --> BB3 is the BEST BOOK OUT THERE
USMLE world questions 3x --> 4/2014 to 8/2014 ---> HARD AS HELL, but totally worth doing.. definitely helped tuned my test taking strategy.. finished at 55% correct.. around 75 decile
MKSAP questions 2x 4/2014 to 8/2014 round 80% right this time around..

I'll post more when I get my score break down.

For those you passed, congratulations!

Gutonc, how's that for giving back?? 🙂

Congrats!

@DrSeattle & @Poety2, and everyone - CONGRATS! I, too, PASSED!!! WOOT WOOT!
What an incredible, humbling experience!! So happy to be done with it and yes, I shed tears of joy because it was THAT awesome.
Thanks for the moral support and see you in 10 years! 😀

My study tactic: starting from March, I started with MKSAP and Medstudy
Medstudy books 90% x 1
MKSAP Q's x 3 (scoring in the 90's near test date)
AWESOME REVIEW in NJ in July 2014 <- SO Worth it; our residency class had 9/13 people attend and had 100% PASS rate as a class
Read Awesome review books x 2.5 afterwards
Took board exam 8/2014 and the rest is history.

*I bought Knowmedge and UWorld too = not worth it in my opinion
Knowmedge was too didactic and was not as accurate as I liked
UWorld questions did not correlate well with the exam; MKSAP & Awesome Review were definitely spot on.

Very thankful to God that I passed. Here's what I did to prepare. Hope this helps those that will be taking the exam next year. My resources were MKSAP questions, Board Basics 3, and the PASS Machine online board review course

I started studying in mid-January but took 2 four-week breaks since starting. Be sure not to underestimate the exam! I purchased the PASS machine online review course and it was well worth it as I'm not someone that does well with lots of text (MKSAP). My strategy was to assimilate the info in many different ways so that it sticks somewhere in my head (at least till the end of the exam, lol). I studied by section: Cardiology, then Pulm, then GI, etc. I would listen to the PASS machine video lectures on that section while making notes or underlining important points on their syllabus, then I would read up that section on Board Basics 3. After that, I did the MKSAP questions on that section, read the explanations thoroughly, and took notes. I would then move to the next section, and so on. Like I said, I took 2 months off (basically slacked off) but had finished everything once by the end of residency in June. I'd say I averaged ~65-67 on mksap the first time through. I slacked off the first week or so of fellowship but then realized 1 had only about 30 days left. I reviewed all the notes I'd taken from doing MKSAP questions, then did 60 questions of MKSAP daily for 20 days, finishing all 1200 questions about 5-7 days before my exam. I averaged 80s on MKSAP the 2nd time around. I then did all the questions I'd gotten wrong again. I wish I had time to review BB3 before the exam especially the "Don't be tricked" sections because I think it's very high yield for the exam. Unfortunately I didn't.

The exam was definitely tough, but you can do it. My advice is: Don't underestimate it, study hard, and pray! 🙂 All the best

Reading: Board Basics (Made sure that I knew all the details in this book)
Questions: MKSAP 16 avg 70s-80%, Uworld (55%-75%) I have to say that there were quite a few questions on exam that I was like oh, I just reviewed that in uworld, Knowmedge (60%ish)
Did all questions and repeated wrong questions.

PASSED!!
Third time is the charm.

This has been a humbling experience. The best advice, which has already been said here, is “Respect the test”. I did not take the test seriously the first time and failed. The second time, I did not learn my lesson and did nothing new to improve my chances and failed. This time, I made a plan, started early and used multiple resources. Here is what I studied for my three attempts:

First attempt: took it right after residency.
- Basically blew it off. I had scored high in all the steps, was considered a very good resident, came from a highly-regarded program and scored around 50th percentile on the in-training exams. So I felt that with an 85% or so pass rate and over 95% first-time pass rate from my program, there was no way I was going to fail. I did about two-thirds of the MKSAP questions, scoring around 65%. I then perused board basics the weekend before my test. FAILED!

Second attempt: took it summer after the first year of fellowship.
- After I failed the first time, I told myself I was going to start studying early but really did not find the time to study because of a busy fellowship. I also procrastinated and before I knew, it was 4 weeks to my exam. I took a 2-week vacation to study – went through about 80% of MKSAP questions, again scoring about 70%. I had also bought the Medstudy books but did not get a chance to read them. I started board basics 2 about one week before the test and read through it once but it was really cramming and I did not retain much. FAILED!

Third time: 2014
I decided to get serious. I knew that if I blew it again, I would have to sit out one year and then would not be able to take my subspecialty board exam for two years which will make it difficult for me to find a job when I graduate next year. I came to SDN, read this thread and similar ones and took some of the tips.
This time, I started EARLY, meaning around January. I read Board Basics 3 three times. I also took the online Pass Machine course, taking notes as I listened to the lectures. I also used MKSAP audio companion – listened to the recordings whenever I was driving in my car and whenever I was working out at the gym. This actually helped me keep my workouts on schedule because I could study and workout at the same time. For questions, I went through all of MKSAP questions, scoring 70% on the first try. I read all the explanations including the ones I got right. I then did it a second time, scoring about 85%. The third time, I only did the questions I got wrong, making sure I had 100% at the end. To supplement the MKSAP questions, I used Knowmedge, reading the explanations for all the questions. It is not representative of the actual exam and some of the questions are very hard but it was very helpful to cement some of the knowledge. Two weeks before the exam, all I did was Board Basics 3.
I definitely felt better about the exam this 3rd time. The first and second times, it felt as if each question had two correct answers that I had to choose between. This last time, I saw a best answer for most questions. PASSED!!!

Glad it’s finally over. Now I can move on with my life. I still am of the opinion that the test does not put enough emphasis on things we commonly encounter in the day-to-day practice of internal medicine, and instead putting too much focus on uncommon diseases and even some esoteric minutiae. But it is what it is and if you put in the work, chances are high that you will pass.

So in summary, my tips will be:
For knowledge base – Board Basics 3 (a must). If you have time, then go through Medstudy if you like studying in outline form or MKSAP books (if I had to do it over again, I would have started reading MKSAP books during second year of residency to shore up my knowledge base. If you are an audio-visual learner like myself, PASS machine online videos and MKSP audios are good.
For questions – Do all MKSAP questions, multiple times and go over the explanation of the answers. Supplement with a second question bank - Knowmedge, USMLE world etc.
Start early, have a plan and stick to it, and again, Respect the exam!
Good luck to those taking it next year, and for those that failed, you can do it next time!
