It's up folks! Any other geeks (like me) starting to work on it today?

I was wondering when someone was going to notice. I'll probably start today and finish June 15th (i.e., as soon as I get the MCAT results)....

Im with you - im starting early as well and i dont think its geekish to start early. Being all "cool" with this med application stuff is foolish. The earlier the better

Good luck

Already finished most of it. just need to finish my coursework when I get grades back from this semester. Good Luck!! 🙂

I put in all of the easy stuff this morning (biographical, schools attended, schools applying to, etc). Now its time to start thinking about a personal statement 😱

theý're no cool pre-meds....we are all dorks, nerds, and/or geeks. Stop trying to lie to yourself or others.

On a side note, I'm entirely done with AMCAS.....j/k 🙂

I started it. So far what I hate most about AMCAS is that it doesn't support Firefox so I'm forced to use Internet Explorer.

I also don't want to have to finish my personal statement. How can I be sick of this process before it even started?

hey.......
what do i do if I'm planning on moving soon...the permanent address I put down currently will not be the one I'm going to be at in a month or two.

I had that same problem last year. If you are going to be moving before you submit, wait to fill out that part of the app until you move. If you move AFTER you plan to submit, just put down your current address now, and change it after you move. You have to re-submit your amcas, but its not a problem at all. Supposedly amcas notifies all your schools, but i sent a separate email to all the schools saying my new address just so they would have it for their records. And make sure to forward your mail! just so you dont miss any stray letters🙂
Hope this helps and good luck!

count me it (surprise, surprise). i'll be sending out my transcript request forms today too!
i'm so excited!!!!

Question: Do we wait until the April MCAT scores become available before submitting the AMCAS application?

You don't have to do this if you don't want. However, schools will usually hold your application until your scores come anyhow, plus I wouldn't suggest selecting schools without having an idea of how you did on your MCAT. You'll find out your scores in June, still giving you plenty of time to submit what would be considered early so my advice is fill it all out, work on your PS and then just wait to select schools and submit.

Hey,
I think we may be the same person. I am just on my way to the registrar's office right now. 🙂

Quick q. anyone know how to put information about college classes taken in high school? (ie, how to enter it into the 'colleges attended' area)

This is a tricky one...
I took Diff E and Vector Calc during senior year of high school (Fall '01, Spring '02) and then i took orgo I over the summer (Summer '03, after my freshman year), all at my local state U....anyone know how to split these up?

Good Luck to all my fellow SDNers applying for 2006 cycle. 👍 👍 👍
:luck: :luck: :luck:

ANd please send in your transcripts ASAP because that is the part where most people get stuck.....you will be surprised how many transcripts they lose during the process....some people had to send them multiple times ....

So don't procrastinate....get it done ASAP...

Good Luck :luck: :luck: :luck:

Finally you come around! I had expected you to start this thread - in fact, I opened SDN this morning looking for *your* AMCAS thread. 😉

I think there is an option that allows you to designate whether its your HS year, FR, SO, JR, SR, etc. So, you would just enter it as normally, *except* you would put in HS of course.

Anyone know if or how you are notified when AMCAS receives your transcripts?

i think they email us when they get it.

I've already asked this a couple of times before, but I am still a little confused. Do I wait until this semester's grades are in and then submit my AMCAS transcript request form, or do I just do it now only including my grades/classes through the end of last semester? Also, how much of my classes do I enter in the AMCAS online: through this semester or up until last semester? The only reason I'm asking is because my spring grades won't be in until the end of May and I don't want to delay. Thanks!

Interesting little quirk. I went to "Print Your Application" just to check out what I had so far. Under "Legal USA Resident?," it says "No." But then goes on to list my (correct) legal place of residence.

*shrugs*

Me too!!! Especially since my school states that it can take 3-4 weeks!

Hey does anyone know why they need your parents'/siblings' info? Did ya'll leave that blank or fill it in? What about stepparents?

When you register for the app, it asks for an address. What if you live on campus and will be moving to another dorm next year? Which address do I put down?

Oh yeah, I'll be at home for the summer too. I have three addresses to choose from, so which one?

eeny meeny miny mo?

thanks

I personally dont trust the campus mail system so I put my home address. Although I know my parents will look at my mail while I'm away next semester atleast I have the peace of mind that all important documents are going home.

I started mine today too, and sent off all of my transcript request forms. (I have five of them! 😱 Who thinks they'll all make it to AMCAS on the first try??? :meanie: ) One other nasty surprise for me is that activities section where you are supposed to put in 15 activities and then write up to 1375 characters about each one. I thought the PS was the only essay on the AMCAS app. 🙄 Do most people use the entire space, or just write a few sentences about each activity? And what happens if I can't come up with 15 activities???

I was actually very pleased by the increase in characters for activities, as I'll get the chance to tell not only what I did, but why it is important and what I learned from it. It makes the list more reflective of your experiences rather than a laundry list of activities.
As for not having 15 activities - dont worry about it. In fact, dont fill in the last few with lame filler material, like IM waterpolo or something like that. AMCAS states that medical schools are looking for quality of activities, not quantity, and I believe them - it's what my pre-med advisors have said from day one.

AMCAS will send you an email to your designated email address when each of your transcripts are received. I went through this process last year. 😉

I had the same problem with the Legal Resident thing. Just a glitch I guess.

I've found the answer to the transcript issue. If you click Details under your status on the main menu, it should pop up with a list of your schools and whether the respective transcripts have been received. Awesome.

I expect to get my undergraduate degree in June 2006 but AMCAS doesn't have a date past 2005. Any suggestions?

That's the only part I have left to do, and I'm not looking forward to it. I was hoping my GPA calculation would pop up, but that won't appear until they verify transcripts. 🙁

Premeds are irritating and always wining thats what I know but being dorky nerds and or geeks? Oh wait you right wining and being irritating is a dorky trait - my bad lol

Anyway we all in it together so its not so bad 😀

Good luck everyone

Anyone with a suffix in your legal name? I'm not sure what to do since my legal name (on my SS card) is "Lastname Jr.", but when I leave off Jr. and select it in the suffix box, it just says that my legal name is "Lastname". Am I just being stupid and making a big deal out of nothing? When schools see my app I want my legal name to have a Jr. on it. Any ideas?

Just a question, I can't seem to find the answer. I studied abroad last summer at the University of Paris, but I went through an outside program, not through a US university. Do I still need to submit the transcript from there? THe only thing I could find was
"#

If I received transfer credits, do I need to have transcripts sent from those schools?

AMCAS requires that official transcripts from all U.S. and Canadian post-secondary institutions are submitted, regardless of which school(s) accepted this credit. For example, if you take a summer course at a community college and transfers the work to your primary/home institution, AMCAS requires BOTH official transcripts; the one from the community college and the one from your regular year college, even if the community college course work also appears on your home institution transcript."

Anybody know if i need those transcripts as well?

Speaking of dorky- I read the ENTIRE 121 page AMCAS 2006 application packet that explains EVERYTHING you could EVER want to know. My understanding (I have the same situation with studying abroad not through my university) is that you DO need a transcript from that program. Maybe I'm wrong..feel free to correct... 😕

I don't know, but I'm going to ask my advisor about it tomorrow. She's actually pretty knowledgable about htis stuff, surprisingly. I'll let you know what she says.

Hi,

I am confused about when the completed AMCAS application gets sent out to schools. Since the 2006 AMCAS is available now, if I were to complete the application today, would it be sent to schools today? I thought that there was was a specific day which is earliest at which you can submit your AMCAS application. Essentially, it was my understanding that the AMCAS application is available to be filled out a month before before it can actually be submitted to be sent to schools. I thought that the earliest an AMCAS application is sent out to schools is on or around June 1st. Is this not the case? I know that the AAMC will not submit the AMCAS application until transcripts are received and grades are verified. But is this the sole factor that determines when an submitted application gets sent out to schools?

My goal is to apply as soon as possible and I already have my MCAT scores from August 2004 (I did not take the MCAT in April 2005 and will not take it in August 2005). So if I want to be as early as possible, should I just get my transcripts sent and submit the AMCAS ASAP? I would like the have my AMCAS sent to schools before people who are waiting on April 2005 scores.

Thanks for your help.

The first possible date to submit your AMCAS app is June 1st. However, your actual AMCAS app will not be sent to your schools of choice until they receive all the required documents (I.E. MCAT scores, Transcripts, etc.)...from that point of when they receive all your documents, its about 4-6 weeks (I think) until the apps are receieved by the med schools.

Depending on which med schools you apply to, some will automatically send you a secondary, while others will perform a prelim screening (range from leniet to stringent), then give you a secondary.

If you apply early (as in June), it doesnt take AMCAS very long to process your transcript, so schools can get your application in one to two weeks instead of the usual 4-6.

I just typed in May 2006 as my expected graduation date, and it worked fine. I could have selected all the way up to 2010 for my graduation date. 😕

When you say what category your classes are - is that what determines what goes into your science GPA?

yes, i believe so. but just remember they do go back and verify, so make sure you're marking the right categories for each class.

Someone advised me to order a copy of my transcript to be sent to me along with aamc when I ordered mine from the registrar. THis way, when I receive mine, I know that my univ. actually sent it out to Aamc as well. Just a helpful word of advice for all the SLACKERS out there who didn't request their transcript on the first day....oh man, i need a life.

only 2 more days till kenya 😍

can anyone categorize these from the application's guidelines?

Epidemiology
Integrated Arts and Humanities (pre-req)
Biochemisty

Also what are you guys putting down for extracurricular. I don't want to overload, but I have my shadowing, volunteering, and prolly a few clubs I am involved in. Anyone else finding it hard to determine the hours/week?

I don't really want them to know about my parents and their education - will I be penalized for not filling this part out?
