1) Yes, but also briefly include the context of the observation (like, through my job as . . . ). If apropo, be sure to mention primary care docs, as many programs want to see that you’ve observed longitudinal care.

2) I can’t speak for every program, but in general, many look at certain roles as equivalent to shadowing, eg scribe, translator, etc. Some lump all clinical hours, both passive and active together. Some may be pickier, but less so this coming application year due to covid shutting down easily found shadowing opportunities. Some won’t be happy unless you have rural shadowing. If you want to worry about it beyond this general reassurance, it’s not too late to add more dedicated shadowing time for the sake of Secondaries, update letters, and interview conversations.
 
I was on student government for my master's program this year. I was wondering how many hours I should list? Do I put in my hours in the program that I have "done things", or my time as the position in the program as a whole? Thank you!

List only the hours that you have done things, like attend meetings (zoom or live), act to organize initiatives, etc.

I volunteered abroad on a medical mission for 4-weeks. Claiming 'X' amount of hours for this trip, half involved clinical setting observation, while the other half included community service, outreach work. Had no plans on splitting, as I read that looks weird sometimes, but was wondering how I would write this. I am more looking to write about the outreach programs and focusing on this, due to its significance and the amount of clinical experience I already have on my application. Could I classify it as 'non-medical volunteerism' and claim 'X' hours and discuss all aspects of the trip? Do I halve it and essentially just omit all the hours I spent in the hospital? I was also thinking if I just put 'medical volunteerism' it covers both, but the work involved is not specifically that.

You might list it as “Other” and title it International Service, Hospital & Community, then break down the sub components in the description, apportioning more description to the outreach programs. This would be the most accurate.

Or list it all under Volunteer/Community Service-Not Medical/Clinical, deemphasizing the hospital portion, but still breaking it out in the description. (Adcomms can mentally consider it Clinical if they wish). This is a better choice if you are short on Nonclinical hours.

How many completed hours of active clinical experience do you already have to list?
 
@Catalystik ~1000-1500 hrs but they are from activities 3-4 years ago, did some shadowing in the past few years pre-COVID, and work in clinical research directly interacting with individuals with medical conditions and doing very "clinical" evaluations except for research purposes so it is technically human subjects research not clinical trials so I'm not sure if this counts as active clinical experience or not

Since the clinical volunteering was awhile back, it might be best to highlight the newly-begun endeavor by giving it its own space. Since you have scarcely begun, and who can know if events will interfere with adding a year's worth of volunteer hours, rather than including all the projected hours for the next year in the header, I suggest listing only the completed hours, and then in the narrative stating that you plan to continue through [date] 4 hours per week (or whatever).

What is the name you are giving to the space about the human subjects research? I'm hoping it's something that will highlight the active patient interaction somehow.

Are abstracts submitted to conferences worth putting on your activities section. I wasn't the first author but was like the 3rd and 4th and the abstracts were presented at international conferences by my PI and post-doc. I was wondering whether these are worth putting if you already have a publication and poster section. Also if I should put these, should I list them as 'Other' and put abstracts or list them as 'posters and presentations'.

If you were a named author, then abstracts that were accepted and presented, either via podium or poster, are worth listing (giving credit to the presenter). Add them to your posters space, unless the data was part of the accepted publication, in which case it would go in the Publications space. See post #2, item 20 of this thread for guidelines on doing that.

I am a delivery driver which is my main source of personal income. I do not have a supervisor or regional manager but I myself do have access to my hours worked. Should I put myself as the contact for proof of my activity on the AMCAS? A contact title for paid work experience is required. Or should I list the company as "other" so no contact information is required? I could also put "I don't have a boss and am considered self employed" on my experience description which is in fact true.

You could use the payroll office that issues your check. Or use yourself if you are an independent contractor, using your own car.

The Other category does require a Contact. It's Hobbies that does not.

Clinical research coordinator? I talk about interacting with research participants, but I don't refer to them as "patients" - can I? I know some adcoms on here feel that human subjects research is not clinical experience and that human subjects are not patients but others are fine with it.

Are the human subjects you interact with current patients in a clinical facility at the time that you engage with them? Do they have an existing diagnosis? If I had a fuller understanding of this and your role, I could give you my opinion.

-They have existing diagnoses and an MD assessment is done
-There is communication with their regular providers
- Results help make treatment decisions or alter treatment plans
-You take VS, perform imaging and heart tests, and administer brain function assessments

IMO, yes, you can certainly refer to them as "patients." I have posted my criteria before and you meet them.

It depends on the role taken on. Much of what a spiritual leader does is teaching and serving others. But, for example, if they also come up with new initiatives, form committees to implement them while providing oversight, take responsibility for getting results, train others to take on related roles, then I would consider that to be leadership.

I'm a rising sophomore and one of my honors college directors recommended I sign up to be an Honors College Orientation mentor, and it seemed like a great opportunity which I'm excited to do. But I wanted to know if the role classifies as leadership or not. As a mentor, I'll help freshmen Honors students with life on campus, answer any questions, and lead them through orientation. I also help them move in and might be able to lead a workshop. The mentorship might be extended throughout their entire freshman year and not just orientation. It's described as a leadership experience by the director, but I got some conflicting opinions from past SDN posts.

Mentoring generally falls under the Teaching tag. If you were organizing, training, and taking responsibility for other Orientation Mentors, then it would be considered Leadership.
 
In college I had leadership positions in two organizations where my entire role was to organize and then do those service events. Could I count those as community service or would they need to be leadership?

It really varied- for the community, some of them were planting trees, making dog toys for animal shelters, working at food kitchens, packing medical supplies, and some of them were for campus- helping out at campus blood drives, organizing science demos for middle schoolers through our university, etc.

It's difficult because I just kinda found stuff in our area that we could do for that week, so we didn't do anything on a regular basis.

As the leadership (organizing, delegating, having overall responsibility) also benefited the off-campus community, you could list the entire activity under Volunteer that includes participating in the events. OTOH, if you want a dedicated Leadership space, you'd list only the dates and hours of leadership and then use another space for the dates and hours of miscellaneous hands-on community service.

Any tips on how to put in contact info for a job that you sort of had a rough departure at? I really want to include something from 2020 where I got a lot of clinical experience at, but it was short-lived (four months) and kind of don't want to be back in touch with the advisor for it...

You don’t need to provide a reference from someone who knew you, just a Contact who can verify the timeframe of your employment. So use the payroll office or Human Resources. Or a coworker. Or as a last resort, yourself.

Do you think it's worth mentioning this position at all since it was four months? It was full-time though so I got like, 600 hours out of it.
 
Also, what's the rule for honors/rewards like Dean's List and Merit-based scholarships: all under one activity or separate activities for each?

And if I do go with all under one activity, how would I go about putting contact information since each one belonged to a different organization?

One activity space. The College Registrar can be used as a Contact and can attest to all of them.

How many other clinical experience hours do you have, and when? How long ago was the 4-month position?

About 1000 clinical research hours, and about 300 in a clinic hours. But as a reapplicant, I feel like this 600 could really help me, in addition to the 200 I have from a position these past three months. Also, a correction, actually worked at this place for six months, not four.

1) Add other Contacts to the narrative space, grouped with that school's recognitions.

2) I think you should keep the 600 clinical employment hours over 6 months on your application. The 200 recent hours over three months doesn't give an impression of prolonged consideration of medicine as a career.

1) You might summarize some of the recognitions to take up less space without giving specific scholarship names or the exact terms of deans list. And since Deans List is inferable from your grades anyway, that would be safely omitted if necessary.

Hello. Would a job where I managed things/systems, but not people count as leadership? I managed different computers around the world and ensured they ran and did their job. If they didn't, I would try to fix them remotely or contact someone to fix it. Thank you.

It seems to me that the majority of this position consisted of doing the work yourself, rather than delegating to peers whom you took responsibility for. I suggest listing it as Employment-Not Medical/Clinical, highlighting your technical prowess, but also mentioning the hiring of others for tasks outside your ability. Adcomms can make up their own minds about whether that is the type of leadership in which they are interested.

So I'm an Asian-American convert to Reform Judaism* with Conservative Jewish influences but treat halachic issues seriously and talk about tutoring Charedi (fervently-Orthodox) Jews in NYC in organic chemistry as I discuss the diversity of my own students in an MM statement. However my own religious identity is not obvious especially since my legal name reads Asian, but these experiences are extremely important to me (in part because I regularly interact with Orthodox Jews in other parts of my personal life). Do you have any idea how to proceed? This is especially since I plan to apply to schools affiliated with Touro and YU (Einstein).

Many special characters get mangled in the PDF version of your application. Commas are fine. But check how the print version will look if you use a “/“ from the Main Menu>Print Application. You get a preview and don’t have to actually print it out.

But — what about emdashes —

But character limit! I have nowhere else to really describe my religious identity on my primary application. I just want to make sure adcoms don't mistake me as an outsider to the Jewish community especially given my Asian legal name. Off the record, I have to say that I went to shul a lot more often / regularly after too many life and death calls as an EMT.

Also, do most ad com readers know the difference between the Charedi and the Torah Umadda world? Do I have to spend character counts explaining what Charedi means? I am not sure if folks in the Midwest truly appreciate the significance of tutoring Charedi women in Charedi neighborhoods advanced science so they can go to pharmacy or nursing school when many of their female peers do not even hold GEDs.

I am recruited often for speaking engagements along the lines of women’s leadership (general) and encouraging women in STEM. Some are paid and some are not.
For my entry I currently have a list of 5 with their relative audience number, date, title of my speech/presentation. I’ve only included ones where I am a keynote speaker or presenting for at least 45 minutes.
This is something I love to do and would like to incorporate it on my W/S section.

What are some title options?
I currently have “Invited Speaker”

What category would this best fall under to be most impactful and representative?

Practice explaining it without insider terms to your non-Jewish friends. Make it simple. If you have too much not-generally-recognized terminology, screeners will stop reading and skim, just as if you were explaining some sort of jargon-ridden research topic. The hallmark of a good teacher is that they can explain complex topics in an understandable manner, so that the information is retained.

As @Goro said, you can maybe use Secondary essays for Touro and YU (Einstein) to explain in more detail.
 
Hi everyone! I only presented my research at my university's research symposium. Is a symposium still worth listing under 'conference', or should I just include the fact that I did this under 'presentations/posters'? Thanks!
