Hello everyone,
I was recommended to this forum by a friend and I would like to congratulate everyone for taking and doing well on their MCAT's. Does anyone have any advice for me regarding what I should do in order to prepare for the exam. I am considering Kaplan, Princton Review and a couple of other preparatory courses! Help :scared:

There isn't any one-size-fits-all advice for MCAT preparation. Each person must do what is best for himself, after making an honest evaluation of his strengths and weaknesses. Are you someone who is self-motivated with a good science background? Then you may not need to take a course. Many people find that they prefer the structure and discipline that the course provides, as well as the access to extra study materials. If you do want to take a course, you should start by doing your homework. Ask some older friends in your town how they liked their courses, including what was good, and bad, about them. Also ask them about specific instructors that they liked. You should then go visit each company's center and meet with the manager. Find out whether you qualify for any discounts, what resources are available to you for the money, etc., keeping in mind your own strengths and weaknesses. Ideally you will also be able to meet with the instructors. Good luck on the MCAT.

Hello QofQuimica,
Thank you for answering my thread. The thing is that I graduate college as a biology major next spring and I am considering taking the MCATs in the summer. I live in NYC so it is sometimes difficult to find instructors at a prep institution whom one of my friends had taken already. But, I will ask them again. I was thinking about buying an MCAT prep book and studying it. But my problem is finding a prep institution that would adhere to my needs. I guess I have to do some thorough research; but I will keep looking. Thanks alot for your help 😀

I can't help you very much with specifics; I'm in FL. 🙂 But NYC definitely will have Kaplan, TPR, and probably some other prep companies that I don't know about. So you should have tons of choices. Maybe that makes it a little worse: too many choices is sometimes harder than too few!

Hey guys,
I took the August MCAT and got a 29Q
Physical: 10
Verbal: 10
Biology: 9
Writing: Q

I took the Kaplan course and completed most of the study questions, took about 5 AAMC exams, 6 Kaplan exams, etc. I was scoring on avg. 31s but b/c of the hurricane season in FL, I think the stress of that got me a 29. I would like to improve my score to around a 33-34ish. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions about review books-I was thinking exam crackers...Also, would you recommend taking the test in April (I would have completed a Biochem and Physiology course that would help improve my Bio section).?

figured I might as well add my two cents...

PS: 12
VR: 10
BS: 10
WS: Q
Total: 32Q

Took a TPR course in Palo Alto. Overall, I think what was most helpful were the practice problems - and no, I didn't complete all of the homework. Taking diagnostics really helped, as I wasn't nervous or anything on the test day. I really wish I had taken biochem/neurosci, and that I didn't have some lousy VR passages. Other than that, I'm satisfied with my score, for now.

congratulations!! can you give me tips on how you were able to improve by 5 points? awesome job!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to boost my confidence and to better prepare myself for taking it in april?

Hi Mona,

There are a few threads on this forum with study tips from people who scored well on the test. What works for each person will vary, but it might help answer your questions. Good luck on your MCAT. :luck:

33Q, better than I expected. this was the 3rd go, for me. I took the test 2 times before, both 3 years ago during my sophomore year. this is exciting.

Hiya,

If you dont mind me asking, what were your two prior scores? I am in the same boat (26R, then 27S).. Looking to break 30 this time!!!

I already posted this in the 30+ thread, but why not here as well.

PS- 12
VR- 12
WS-Q
BS- 13
37Q

My goal when I started studying was to score well enough for med school by a safe margin (10+ on every section, at least 32 total), so I'm very happy about this. I used do-it-yourself books and practice tests.

B: 13
P: 14
V: 13
WS: Q

Total: 40Q

I took the Princeton Review course the summer before I took the exam (I teach for them now 😀 )... I hit a 40 and a 42 on my last two practice exams, so I would consider them fairly decent indicators of an actual exam grade.

Are you referring to your last two TPR tests, or the AAMC tests that they administer as your last two proctored tests????? I'm asking because I've seen a greater score increase on my AAMCs then I see on 4931 and 4921. Although I did decent on 4941 and 4951 which I also took.

Just a bit confused. What city are you teaching in??? I'm a TPR member here in Tampa.

Im referring to the last two AAMC tests. TPR tests seems to be slightly more difficult/scaled down from the AAMC's, though that could also be because I took the AAMC ones last.

I'm up in sunny Cleveland, OH 🙂
