the only notable aspect of the application was the essay, which went something like this: discuss an activity outside of medicine that has been of great interest to you. i believe the maximum length was ~3 pages.

good luck.

wow 3 pages!

So who's getting ready to move to case? I'll be moving in Aug 29th, I think that is a Thursday. Any free hands that want to exchange moving some small boxes in for a cold beverage of your choice?

My standard username and password worked for the VPN.

Did you have to register your computer or network card?? I still can't get my VPN going yet and I really want to start d/ling the free programs that Case have available!

I discovered another trick with Case email. They have an alias for your email address that uses your first and last names with @case.edu. [First name].[Last name]@case.edu is equivalent to the address with the letters and numbers @po.cwru.edu.

You can also make up to 5 aliases such that you will have [alias]@case.edu and any messages sent via your alias addresses will be sent to the original (standard) Case e-mail address.

Here is the link to add alias e-mail address:

https://its-services.cwru.edu/mailalias/

For those who are having trouble with VPN and such, email the computer help desk: [email protected]. Or call them, 216-368-HELP. They're pretty useful for run-of-the-mill problems like these. (I'd offer to troubleshoot myself, but I think they've changed things considerably since I graduated.)

Also, a helpful hint: you want to check your Case email regularly for communications from the university. But if you have another reliable email account, I wouldn't go switching everything over. The Case network isn't known for its reliability.

Hey,

Where's that second packet of goodies we were supposed to get? i am getting antsy. I'm all wound up and ready to get going. Did anybody sign up with one of those microscope rental companies? It seems to me that for an item that is $400 new, $250 to rent it over two years is outrageous.

Judd

Buy new, the old ones that Case students sell usually suck.

I'm also waiting for this in the mail. Whenever it comes, can someone please post what the important info is? I'll be away from home for the next 3 weeks so I won't be able to check my mailbox. I'm guessing it contains specifics about times and places for classes.

I talked to Ellen today and she said that Marlene was sending out a packet of information on Friday. So no worries, it's coming 🙂 Oh, and I'll be in Cleveland on the 29th, if anybody needs help or wants to hang out. 3 more weeks of freedom!

I'm a little worried about my FinAid. I returned the offer sheet and did my entrance counseling. Am I missing a step? Shouldn't I have gotten a confirmation back from Case?

try going to www.laureate.salliemae.com and filling out the "for loan applicant" stuff... i never received finaid confirmation from case, but my loan information was already in the salliemae database when i filled out my personal information, so i just had to sign the master promissory note and that was that.

HERE IS SOME ADVICE ABOUT BUYING BOOKS AT CASE. There are three medical bookstores in Cleveland. You can buy from Case's new bookstore (which I have not been too yet), there is a store called Michael's Medical Bookstore (its across from the Clinic and has a decent selection, for when Case runs out), AND THE BEST BOOKSTORE OF ALL -- Leonardo's on Lee Road. This place sells all used med school books and has killer deals. They have everything Case students need and some other stuff, also the lady who runs the place is nice and will order you stuff also.

Thanks for the info. Where is the "new" case bookstore. I have not been to Thwing in several months. Is there a new bookstore in there? is the one in the basement of the med school no more?

Yeah...apparently they moved the medical bookstore from the basement of the medical school, where there was more room, to thwing, where there is less room. the medical section consists of about three rows of those metal bookshelves on the bottom floor of the thwing store. hopefully they moved the bookstore in order to make room for some or other really neat thing, like a dummy lab or an arcade.

This is what I had saved from my application: "The Admissions Committee is interested in gaining insight into you as a person. Type or Copy and Paste a brief essay on a subject outside of medicine, which has been an area of great interest to you. Please limit your essay to 2 pages." Good luck! 🙂

...And that doesn't imply that you have to write 2 pages by any means. The adcom members simply know that pre-meds tend to be verbose, and are resigning themselves to the inevitable even as they take steps to stem a deluge of fictional novel submissions.

What the heck is a "thwing"?

YES THE MED SCHOOL BOOKSTORE IS REALLY NO-MORE, but there is hope. They are actually building a really nice new bookstore (should be started in the fall and finished maybe next year). The new bookstore is apparently going to house all the Case schools books and it will be huge. The area where it is going to be built is a bit controversial (down near the business school over a parking lot) because it is going to take up parking, which there is little of at Case. It should be really nice. The dummy labs are rumored to be going somewhere but no sure where.

Thwing is simply the name of the building that, perhaps up until the next few years, has served as CWRU's "student union". Had the main bookstore, some eating, an art galary, plenty of seating, etc. I am under the impression that they are tearing it down (or moving it - they have done that to another building before) to make room for another building designed to look like the main library and integrate with that space better. have a look at the master plan.

Got the new packet in the mail today. Those outside of Cleveland should get it in the next few days.

info on the medical plan (which isn't TOO bad), and some other student group stuff.

Also includes an orientation schedule for the first week or two as well as a revised master schedule (like the one we got in the last packet). The master schedule is still worthless - no indication of how long classes last into the afternoon, anatomy, etc. I guess we will get this during orientation.

AND, a "final notice" on getting transcripts in to the office before registration (I'm still missing one).

Thanks for the info, Juddson.

If we're expecting a refund from our loans, how is that money going to be distributed to us? Are they going to send the refund check to our permanent addresses or do we get the check at school? Because the lenders won't distribute the funds until a week before orientation, there isn't much time for the school to send us our checks in the mail.

Just a quick question for those of u accepted to Case - did Case send an explicit email inviting you to fill out a secondary? Or was it one of those deals where u just go to the website yourself.

Thanks for your help

Case sent out an email with the website for the secondary, along with a password you need to get into the system.

Hey,

I was accepted off the waitlist a few weeks ago. I've recieved the first packet of information but not the second. What about the laptops we're supposed to get? Nothing I've received mentions the laptop. I haven't heard any info on make, model, etc... Are we actually buying them ourselves or are we receiving them at orientation?

Hi,

I have not gotten anything regarding the laptops either. I imagine that they will simply hand themm out sometime during orientation. Somebody mentioned earlier that they would be Dell D600's. Notr sure how that fits into the Dell hierarchy.

Judd

From what I can tell on the Dell website, the D600 is a middling Inspiron, which I am sure is more than enough.

Could be speced in the number of ways, though, including a 1.8 gig Pentium M and up to 2 gigs SDRAM. Should have Intel Pro Wireless with a 10/100/1000 ethernet internal. Should be OK.

There was some talk a few months ago regarding the CCLCM people having to giver thiers back after the second year. Not sure that is true for us - but you never know. Can't understand it myself. After two years they are close to worthless and would require so much work to clean them out that a new one would hardly be much more expensive.

Judd

As far as I know, if you graduate, you get to keep the laptop. By that time, the laptop probably will be so obsolete that the school doesn't want it anymore. 😀 Dell makes great computers. I still have and use extensively the Inspiron 5000 I bought for work 4 years ago.

I also learned that refund checks will be available for pick-up from the cashier's office during the week of 8/9.

Hey Christie
welcome to the Case thread. The second packet was sent out Friday from what i understand, so some of us still haven't received it. as for the laptops--they are apparently giving them out during orientation. I originally thought that ppl in past years got Inspirons, but they actually got Latitudes (which seem to be discontinued by Dell.) So I really don't know which model number they will give us instead. I wish it were like ohio state where they factor so much $ into the budget for a laptop of your choice--as long as it has wireless capabilities.
have you decided where you want to live? somewhere on this thread are links for different real estate agents, so you might wanna comb through for those. I'm partial to shaker heights myself 😎
If you have any other questions feel free to PM any of us. Judd is probably the most knowledgeable regarding Cleveland and Case, but all of us are pretty on top of Med School stuff here.

I have a question for all you people who got into Case!
That 2 page essay - did you double space, and were you close to 2 pages?
thanks!🙂

Mine was 3/4 of a page, single-spaced. I believe in quality vs. quantity.

I like the way you think... 👍

nah, dell still produces latitudes... they're in the small business section, though, rather than home.

last year's students got inspirons. i think they were 1100 models? supposedly way too heavy...

I got an email in my Case account for the Fall semester bill. I was feeling good about it until I realized it was for just the Fall semester! Talk about sticker shock! 😱 :scared: 😱 :scared: According to the email, Case won't send a paper bill unless you specifically request it.

i got this today, too. does anyone know how we can opt out of the health plan? it was on the bill, but i don't believe i ever signed up for it.

hey, the laptops we got over at cleveland clinic were D600's. 1.7Ghz P-M, 512 MB ram, 40GB HD, ATI Radeon Mobility 9000, Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller, Dell WLAN 1350 integrated wireless, 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive, 2 USB 2.0 ports, no bluetooth, no firewire port, 1 PCMCIA slot, WinXP Pro SP1. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

I HATE this medical plan waiver thing. Why we need to download a freaking plug-in to waive the medical plan. I can get a MORTGAGE over the internet without having having to install software on my computer. Why can't I waive my medical plan?

To top it off, it tells me that "all sessions are in use - try again later" when I try to do it. To be honest, this is the same message I have gotten every semester for the last billion semesters I have been at CWRU. So, EVERY TIME I have to beg and beg at the Registrar's office to waive it manually for me (which they hate to do). I hate this system.

Hey Judd,

What about parking? Anything you remember about that. If I recall from when I took care of it, they said you reserve a space, but then they let you know later to pay... is that right? If so, about when does the pay part happen? I'm afraid I might have missed something and lost my spot?

I worried about this too. After you have a Case ID and password go to the parking website and follow the instructions. It will let you pay online with a credit card. Then you can pick up your pass at teh office.

What lot did you get?

When I was in Cleveland, I reserved the garage right across the street from the school (where the gym is). Any idea at what point they cancel your reservation? It's a bit pricey, but I figured that for the first year, it would be worth it till I got "the lay of the land" as it were.
