This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Add me to the Cleveland Clinic...Still trying to figure things out between UCI, UCSD and Cleveland tho, but I'm almost sure I'm coming there in July!
BTW, does anyone know the Fairhill Towers? Is it nice?

Is anyone else happy about the CCLCM grant...30,300 per year? Dayaamm

Fairhill Towers are ok.. I think they are pretty reasonable in terms of price and location. You should def look at Waldorf Towers as well- I think 20/32 CCLCM students are staying here. 🙂 PM me if you have any questions WillHague007.

anyone planning to live in the Shaker Square area?

hey SoulRFlare, I am planning to live in the shaker square area in a small one bedroom my first year. Once i get to meet more people then ill prob find a roommate my second year. Im living in the ambassador apt. on fairhill.

So I just signed for a place at waldorf towers, second floor, supposedly newly remodeled 2bed 2 bath w/ NEW carpeting! Now all I need is a roommate to stick in the other room. I come complete with cleanliness, fun times, and a hacked xbox 😀

The grants were indeed very very generous. 😀

I can't say the same for myself! shoot, i'm only getting $4K!!! wtf, i wonder if i can get more money... and plus, i'm not getting any support from the parents. as far as i know, i'm paying ~90% in loans!

Hey if you guys have aim sn's, let's try to get a list of those here...mine is dagame620.
BTW, are 20 people really staying at Waldorf Towers?

Are you going to CCLCM? If so, i was worried about this aspect of thier financial aid program. It differs from other schools in that it is enormously generous for people who demonstrate "need", but sets of a striking dichotomy with those students who are unable to show "need".

At most schools, the difference between people who demonstrate 100% need (ie,, they have no money and the EFC is $0) and those who demonstrate no need (ie., they have EFC's several multiples of the cost of attendance) is only about $11,000 in free money. The rest of the money, whether you have neen or not, is loans anyway. Hence, the non-needy student who has rich parents but who gets no money from them may take solice in the fact that he's only being penalized at most about $11,000 a year compared to the "needy" students.

However, this is not the case at CCLCM. There, the difference between needly students and those who demonstrate no need is a startling $35,000 in free money. That's a staggering penalty for those students who are in the unfortunate circumstance of having wealthy parents who will not pay.

Well, it will be a fantastic school - no doubt, but I think if it is the case that the HUGE grants are in fact "need-based", the financial aid system needs revision.

I thought they were called Scholarly grants that the school could give out as they saw fit, either because of need or because of academics?

My AIM SN is soohean. Yes, I believe 20 people are going to be at the Waldorf, according to the leasing agent. It doesn't surprise me though, since CCLCM was really selling that place in their housing information.

Yeah they had the biggest flyer in the Case housing pack too. The agent told me the building was about 90% med students. This should be interesting. It is probably the worlds highest concentration of medical students outside of a med school dorm.

mine is eunibo713. who wants to meet up before (the cclcm) orientation starts?

They're 'Physician Investigator Training Grants' and they give 4K to *everyone* (regardless of need) - more than that is based on need only. Dr. Hutzler said that they can't/don't give out any more than their need-calculator says, because otherwise it would be merit-based, and they're not doing that this year. However, CCLCM students will get 3k for each of the summers of research - so base aid for everyone should be 7K. Not that great - Judd, I definitely agree with you that the system needs revision. My parents are not 'wealthy', but they live comfortably and are chipping in *some* - but not so much that I haven't maxed out my Stafford loans and am considering getting private loans as well.

Also, I'll be living on Shaker Square, my SN is MissBey (surprise), and I'd love to meet up with people before orientation - I'll be moving down there next Thursday!

hey guys!

just adding my name to the AIM list.. mine is DannGee. i'm going to be living on hampshire, directly behind coventry, which i understand is about 5 minutes away from shaker square, where it seems many of you are going to live. i'm going to be moving on or around the 13th of july, and it would be awesome to meet up with some people before orientation- especially since i'm going to have absolutely NOTHING to do until then!

When is your orientation? Is it like ours, where its only a two day thing before classes? also, do you folks take part in our white coat, or do you have your own?

my aim is "exmike"

we should organize some pre-pre-orientation events. I'll probably be there by july 30th. Thats about five days to kill!

Oh yeah, I'll be at waldorf with the hacked xbox for the fellas. with a to be found roommate.

Orientation is 4 days, starting the 6th. When I first saw the schedule I laughed - two days we start at 7:30, and the other two days, 7:30 - 9 am is listed as 'Free Time' - heh. They're keeping us pretty busy for the most part, but we do get thursday and friday afternoon for real free time. Also, a good chunk of each day is set aside for (organized) lunch. Class/research starts Monday the 12th.
We all have the same white coat ceremony, although Clinic students will get their coats on the 6th when they start.

Ill be starting at CCLCM too. Im also living in the shaker square area. My AIM screen name is yenNstimpy. Grants weren't that great for me either because parents are middle class. I think that covers all the aforementioned topics.

What is a "hacked X-box"?

As I said, I the first round for the first ten of you at Great Lakes Brewing (or anywhere) is on me. Let me know when. I'm always here.

Judd

hey exmike, what are they charging you for the 2-bedroom?

I will be at the Waldorf too, rooming with niveknat. I also have a modded Xbox with a bunch of emulators and games on it that I will be bringing up with me. AIM SN is SSWyvern.

A who? Why would you want to do this? Does this help you beat the games or something?

Anyone getting cable internet access, or DSL? I've been checking prices, and it seems that adelphia is the only cable internet provider....anyone found advertised specials? I kind of want to get DSL, but I will not want to invest in a LAN line....
I'll be moving into the Waldorf apts. on the 26th of June...anyone else gonna be there that early? haha..

I was thinking about this after looking at their prices and came up with something--see what you think--maybe it'll work, maybe not:
if there are med or dental students living in adjacent apartments in your building, go in on one cable account with them. Then, one of you install a wifi hub. If the apartments are close enough together, the signal should carry to the various apartments. voila! cheap cable access.

Greetings all!

I've been checking this on and off for a while, but have not taken part in any discussions yet. I am going to CCLCM next year, well, more like next week, but do not yet have anywhere to live. I see that a lot of you are living in the Waldorf Towers, but I am wondering if anyone who knows the area or is there already might be able to offer any suggestions on where a good, close, cheap place might be? Have you moved into Waldorf and maybe visited a friend in another building that you think in retrospect might be better? The packet of housing information the school sent is kind of overwhelming!

Thanks!

You can do that, but the problem with that is that cable has a tendancy to go down and often the way to fix it is to unplug the cable modem and plug it in again. Which allows it to clear its cache and will often fix any connection problems you are having. What if the people who actually have the connection are out or are asleep when it goes down? Then you just have to wait. Same thing with DSL too.

Since we're getting laptops with wireless access to the school's broadband network, I'm hoping that I will still be able to access it from my apartment. So I'm not planning to get DSL or cable modem until I try this out.

I'd be amazed if it works that far away. On the other hand, the Walforf is only baout 30 football fields away from the "top of the hill" southside dorms. So, IF they have WiFi, then perhaps it just might work.

Hi everybody! I wish I had found this website sooner; there's so much information on here that should be on the med school website! Dunno if we're still keeping track, but I will be attending Case in August with all you lovely people. I'm in the process of figuring out housing, but if I'm around before orientation, I would love to hang out with some of you guys 🙂 My AIM sn is Corangey.

Second...
Only 30 football fields?... guess we'll just have to make a few of these! 😀

Howdy again all...

I am in a mad rush to find myself some housing before orientation starts. I'm flying in this weekend and have a long list of places I'm scheduled to look at, but I'm also after a roommate if possible. Among other things, I can offer an old Sega Genesis to the pot, including FIFA soccer from the late 90's AND Michael Jackson's Moonwalker :wow:

Please let me know!

Whatup all. I'm a senior at Case undergrad and have lived in Waldorf for a year now. I live on the 7th floor facing front and my roomate can get a wireless signal from the SOM. I don't think it'll work as well if you live in the back of the building. BTW, if you live facing the front (probably above the 4th floor), you will have the most amazing view of downtown, campus, and the lake. We have Adelphia cable and SBC DSL. Tell me if you have any other questions! peace out

I guess I wont be getting a view or a signal from my 2nd floor apt eh? 🙁

Yeah, you might not have the best view but the signal may just work if you're facing front

Do CCLCM students get access to the Case wireless network? Does anyone know about this?

They have a 'guest' access point. I was able to log in to SDN from outside the main library and at the medical library. So... I would say 'yes! anyone can jump on it'

you mean you dont have to be part of the university? thats odd.

I didn't need anything at all. I just connected.
I thought it was kinda cool.

Connected with your own computer, or with a computer in the med library?

I remember somebody at my interview who seemed to connect to the wi-fi web at Case with his PDA. He simply hit a button and he was on (after a few seconds of the PDA searching the airwaves). Hmm

Curious - does anybody know if Case has started to look at the waitlist yet. It has to be moving by now, right?

Judd

With my wireless enabled laptop (labtop 😉 ) The first time I used it, I had to go in and select the guest node. After that, it just sees it and I'm on.. no problems at all.
